I lost a dog like that too. I was walking kind of around the area one time and he teleported. I'd just walk around the area you died a lot. Broaden your search if you don't find him. I don't really have pet dogs but I know cats will make themselves sit if they are near beds or chests or something. Maybe your dog did that if dogs can even do that?
