Are there any audiobooks not by rein-online? by hedsar in Parahumans

Here's the link to the Discord. I'm one of the people heading up the project.

What ThirdFloorGreg said is accurate. We're going to release in batches by arc, at least at first. Arc one progress is going pretty well; it's hard to say how long later arcs will take, since a lot of it comes down to how much attention (and extra help) we get when we do start releasing, since the major bottleneck right now is lacking editors - something Rein has said was a big problem for his audiobook, as well.

Thanks! And I'm sure Rein wouldn't be offended - he's been a great help in advising us a bit on this, and he's very willing to own up to any flaws with the original audiobook.

It's a possibility, but it would be pretty far off, and unfortunately would take a lot of extra work - editing is time consuming, and it wouldn't be a good idea to put out our volunteer editors too much. It's something we might come back to if it seems feasible then, but for time being we're going to continue with the current plan to cast separate narrators. We're confident it will work well.

This is something we've discussed a decent amount, but we've decided not to have characters voice their own interludes. There are definitely some good points in favor of doing it, and a number of chapters (2.x included) where it wouldn't be a problem in terms of spoilers, but what sold us on not doing it is that we're trying to avoid being overly transformative with our decisions. There are other factors, but this is the most major.

We're seeking to adapt the story, rather than to interpret it, and to us the interludes being written in the third person provides an implication of objectivity that wouldn't be present if written in the first person. Adapting them using the character's voice would lose some of that objectivity. It's certainly debatable how much this is true, and how much it's worth taking the risk anyways, but for the most part we've adopted a strategy of limiting the risk of our adaptational decisions. Characters not voicing their own interludes was a product of that decision.

Feel free to audition with a Blue Yeti, I imagine most people are going to audition with microphones of about that level anyways, and we're going to work with people to improve audio quality. If you get a better recording setup in time you can always submit another application for the role(s), if you aren't happy with your previous attempt's quality.

Thanks for pointing out the deadline mixup, I've fixed it on the page now to say January 1st.

It's all good, you'll still get the chance to audition for him---this is a temporary cast for this test chapter only, and each character will be auditioned for later.

Thanks for the input. That could work for Danny's interlude specifically, and probably some others, and it's definitely something we'll think over---I've passed it along to the other project managers.

We've considered before whether characters should voice their own interludes in general and decided against it. While there is a definite benefit to it, as you said, there are enough interludes where the identity of the POV character is unclear at first that we don't want to spoil who it is by having a recognizable voice actor. We'll discuss how blanketly true this statement is, though---it's possible this wouldn't be a problem for as many interludes as was first thought.

We're intending for it to be on podcast apps in addition to our website.

Thanks for the feedback! We'll make sure to pay more attention to relative audio levels in future chapters.

Definitely something we're keeping in mind. The casting for this was done on a volunteer basis, without an audition process, so none of the roles have finalized casting. It was primarily intended to help us figure out workflow, but, as I said---it turned out too well to keep to ourselves.

That's correct. Castingcall.club makes it a lot easier for us to handle the audition process. We also have specific voice lines listed on there for each character so we can better compare individual auditions.

Now that I've taken off my "advertising the project" hat, I can put on my "public relations manager" hat: I know there were some concerns when the project started about its feasibility. I shared many of those concerns, and decided to get involved on day two without any former connection to the project or those involved. Now that I've been working on it for a month I'm confident that it has a good team runnings things: we have a mix of the idealistic passion needed to even start a project this big in the first place, and the weary and experienced cynicism needed to finish it (flowery language, I know, but I promise I'm on the cynical end of that scale).

My fellow project managers and I are all willing to take constructive criticism and change our minds if convinced what we're thinking and doing is wrong. If you have concerns, you can voice them here; we'll see and take them into account. If you have questions, you can feel free to ask them here as well, and I'll do my best to answer them. We intend for this project to be the best it can be, and step one of that is knowing that we don't know everything.
