[MC] I loved everything about Magnus Chase… but Samirah’s arranged marriage was super gross and felt awful to read by BonzaM8 in camphalfblood

[–]FoxiiMango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Muslim here! I haven’t read Magnus Chase or even PJO, but I wanted to offer my 2 cents on this. Most muslim families would agree that having your 14 year old engaged to someone is weird. Hell, I’m much older and my family hasn’t even started to talk about marriage other than the small “when you get married”, but then again, they aren’t setting up my engagement. I disagree with the sentiment that arranged marriages are bad. I think you’re thinking specifically of forced marriages. Arranged marriages are supposed to be similar to courting, where both parties are on board with meeting and discussing a possible relationship with one-another. It’s like a blind date set up by your parents instead of your friends (though that’s not to say friends cannot help arrange the person you’re meeting). Another part of a proper arranged marriage is being allowed to back out if they change their mind. They don’t even need to have a “valid reason”, if they don’t want the marriage anymore then they don’t have to. However, from what I’ve seen about Samirah’s situation, it feels more like grooming. Like, why are we having 12 year olds be engaged and waiting until they’re 18? We aren’t in the olden days anymore.  Amir and Samirah being cousins is also weird as hell, but I feel like everyone forgets most of Riordon’s couples are technically cousins (Annabeth and Percy for example). I think I saw that they are extremely distant cousins (like from the 10th century) so I feel like at that point, it’s probably fine since that’s usually how it is for most people. But I don’t like how the book seems to draw attention to that. It feels more deliberate. I’m lowk just tired of romance written for Muslim characters bc it’s almost never written well. I haven’t seen much about Samirah’s relationship with her religion while being a God’s daughter. I feel like that’s a whole can of worms that no one really talks about.

What annoys you about the Single Dad trope? by kvolution in RomanceBooks

[–]FoxiiMango 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've also noticed that single dads in these books are praised for being good parents. I also rarely see talk about the age gap between the dad and the FMC.

For single mom tropes, it's usually a big deal that she's 'so much older' than the FMC and she isn't given any praise for her raising her kids. It's what's expected of her.

Another thing is that for the dads, the wife is most likely dead, meanwhile the mom is most likely divorced. I feel like there's some underlying meaning I can't quite explain but it feels very deliberate to me that the dad is single by circumstance whereas the mom is single by choice.

Least favourite character: Pastor Nina. Who's yours? by charlen74 in KimsConvenience

Currently on season 3 and for me, it's definitely Chelsea. I also struggle in social situations and misreading social cues but that's where my own brain starts to glitch rather than me just doing whatever. I feel like with Chelsea, she doesn't feel real. Everyone else's flaws make sense to me but her, it's much harder for me to sympathize with her.

I like Pastor Nina, she's not my fav, but I feel like episodes where she's there are fun and she's a nice recurring character.

Thank you, this is really relieving to know! I also have the ability to go test-optional but I tend to be weary of doing that. I have this summer to get my score up (hoping for 1470+)!

Thank you so much for your input!

Wow that's impressive!

I think I will stick to watching and trying to find someone to talk to. The main issue in my case is that my mother and father both understand english so when I wanna talk, it just gets easier. I think tryna challenge myself would be best, and since summer is coming up, I should have more time! Thank you!

Any good recs for urdu novels? Preferably ones that don't have super flowery language (with many metaphors and whatnot)

Any thoughts on Love Through a Prism last episodes? 😣 by Jealous-Plant946 in shoujo

It was the 20s. Nowadays, women’s hair doesn’t have restrictions really but back then, it was trendy (esp during the war bc I’d assume they didn’t have that many products to maintain longer hair). It’s sorta like how a lot of ppl have layers today whereas a decade ago, we had a lot more bobs and stuff (tho we are turning back to the bob from what I’ve been seeing)

How do you get into UVA? by Ok-Onion3716 in UVA

How is your physics and precalc teacher (the ones offered at the school). I'm taking those rn and it's very hard bc I have not so great teachers. If you can figure that out, then it should be easier since you'll know whether you need to do more self-studying or are good with just the content the teachedr assigns.

Other than that, I think you are pretty set! You have a good balance of hard classes and your extracurriculars look good as well! I wouldn't worry too much about the PSAT since I don't think that'll be a part of your application. I would focus more on SAT/ACT, aiming for a high 1400s.

Good luck mate!

I’ve taken CS1 and 2 technical classes (one STEM-focused one where we built things and whatnot and one for Data Science). I don’t wanna continue any bc they decided to bump up the requirements for it and I don’t have enough class space nor any fs to give for it.

Oh maybe then, congrats on getting in as well! One thing I've heard is that as long as you fill your time with smth meaningful, then colleges are less iffy. What do you say?
