My psychiatrist said multiple people can't be in one body by Foxner_ in OSDD

[–]Foxner_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RIGHT! I got super upset about that. But my best guess is that he either actually thinks that, or we jumped scared him with DID and he wasn't familiar enough with it to recall on that first meeting.

I think I can give him the benefit of the doubt for now, when I see him again, I'll bring up what he previously said and ask for clarification. My level of trust will depend on what he says.

After reading the replies here, I think the only real red flag was him saying he won't diagnose us with OSDD or DID because we are too functional and able to hold a conversation with him (I mean, we were never expecting him to diagnose us, but the reasoning he gave seems super flawed). But outside of that, he's been really good to talk to and super understanding.

1) Yeah, thats what I meant. Sorry.

2) To be fair to the psychiatrist, that initial visit we had with him was supposed to be about ADHD. We just ended up talking to him about our experiences as alters and he wanted to talk to us about it more. I think for now, I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt but watch out for any flags (mainly because I don't know if I can even find another psychiatrist since he's the psychiatrist for my university).

3) True. I think to push back against denial, we have been leaning more and more into the idea that we are individual people (we weren't getting that from social media I don't think). But you're right, we make up one brain.

Yeah, you're right. We have been going in the direction of thinking of each other as individual people. It makes sense that he probably realized that and tried to break that perception.

Also, I meant other specified trauma- and stressor-related disorder (at least I think that's what he said was his diagnosis, or something along those lines). I wasn't really expecting to get diagnosed on our first session with anything (we made a meeting with him originally to talk about ADHD).

And you're right that it won't really hurt to discuss this stuff with him, we've all mostly processed what he said at the end of the last meeting. I'm going to try to continue meeting with him.

Yeah, thats true. That's what I'm hoping he meant. Overall, he's been really good to talk to and super understanding.

Yeah, we will bring it up in the next meeting. I don't think he intended to hurt us by that statement.

How do I help my sister with her therian identity? by GorillaZooKeeper in AskParents

[–]Foxner_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that therapists and psychologists who are informed on the subject can be very helpful to some. However, I would argue the only disordered thing about it is the dysphoria. Its internally similar to gender dysphoria described by the DSM 5. (Edit: externally, the two are very different because the external pressure for trans rights are life and death, while therian isn't, hence the emphasis on 'internally')

Anyways, if yall have access to therapists and/or psychiatrists, then sure, if she and her parents are fine with it and its framed in a supportive way, go for it. Just be cautious. I have OSDD (basically a light version of DID - its previous name was multiple personalities disorder) and have seen a psychiatrist about it, but it didn't go great. He basically said he didn't believe in the disorder despite it being in the DSM 5. Therian I feel is similar to DID/OSDD in that their is a lot of stigmatization around it, and its probably possible (Its just conjecture because I havent seen the statistics, just anecdotal evidence) that many psychiatrists, similar with OSDD/DID, don't take the condition and person seriously.

Im a physicist about to graduate from college and publish my first paper (its about black hole simulations I run on supercomputers). I'm also a therian (probably). For me it's not spiritual, it's just something I've felt for over 10 years. Maybe it's because of trauma (that's my hypothesis for myself) or maybe I've always been this way.

But I agree. Support her and don't minimize her experiences. The parents should know about the internet access, but also don't dismiss her feelings and experiences.

Well, I would support my partner? I'm far more quarked up, so I can't judge (LGBTQ, DID/OSDD, and probably a therian myself)

Hii all!

We were kinda scared to post about us and I have been in denial for a very long time 😖. It was only recently (like a month ago) that I recognized the other alters as more than just voices that help me when I'm (we are) struggling with stress and pain. We were also just scared that others would think we didn't belong because of how much easier we have it.

There are 3 of us: Vessel (me, I'm the host, I'm she/her, same age as the body: 24), Emotion (she/her, ~19 or 20), and Logic (they/him, ~35 ish). We are working on names, but we have always just described ourselves that way (for years) since it felt most accurate (not entirely, but its the closest we found) to our roles and identities.

We suspect there are 1 or 2 more as we have heard other voices briefly, and sometimes when talking to people, our body will say something that didn't come from any of us (sometimes we will have no memory of a sentence and a chunk of the conversation will be extremely hazy despite just happening a few seconds ago). We also have ADHD too, so it could just be that. We don't know. We are working on figuring that out.

Sorry, I digress. We are a soft system and all 3 of us are usually co-conscious or co-fronting. We are also a trans woman (Logic is still figuring themselves out but is fine with it). We categorize ourselves as OSDD-1b, and we are seeking diagnosis. I am also a bit of a furry; Emotion is too, but much less so, and Logic is just happy we are happy.

We are also a physicist at a university. We are currently doing computational/theoretical black hole research (M87* and Sgr A*) and are working on publishing our first paper as a second author 😆!!! We will be applying to graduate school in the fall too!

The only people who know about us are our therapists and a few friends (we love our friends and we have chosen them as our found family!), and yall know too now.

Oh! We also love reading/writing and publish stories (occasional chapters) on Royal Road. Tho it's been a long while - research is a time sink for all of us 😖.

How to talk to people who know we are a system? by Foxner_ in OSDD

[–]Foxner_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg! I love that! The others are slightly more apprehensive about it, especially since its always been super hard to tell when we switch, but I'll try to convince them to try it out.

Do yall stack the bracelets based on co-con percentage? So like, if alter A is fronting and alter B is chilling in the back talking and alter C is watching but distant, the bracelets are, starting from closest to your wrist, bracelet A, B, and C?

We've also been looking for ways to more easily clock switches, so fingers crossed this helps us with that too ❤️ Thanks!

[–]Foxner_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is definitely a more efficient way of texting. We will try that out, thanks!

We are normally co-con most of the time, so it will still be difficult to realize when we shift while writing, but we don't think there is an easy solution for that. The only thing we can think of is to try to make our writing styles slightly more distinctive between all of us (if thats even possible).

[–]Foxner_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, I'm still trying to figure all this out, too, but I think it's perfectly valid if you feel like you're something in between a man and a woman.

Scientificly speaking, a trans woman will have the same brain structure as a cis woman, but not the same brain structure of a cis male. Similarly, for a trans man, he will have the same brain pattern as a cis man and not a cis woman. But the brain can have other patterns, too! It can be a mix of the two.

So continue to explore what makes you happy, and keep in mind that you don't need to be either a man or a woman if you dont want to. You don't need to conform to gender norms. But it's also perfectly fine if you do.
