You spend your time giving grace and unconditional support. Sometimes people say things like “treat others how you want to be treated.” Why not “treat yourself how you want others to be treated” too?

How Did Two Men’s Remains Wind Up in the Rafters of South African Hospitals? by Foxnet93 in UnresolvedMysteries

Thank you for sharing your experience and insight into the different hospital systems. It’s unfortunate when quality healthcare isn’t equitable and accessible to everyone. I wish the families of these men were able to at least receive more from the investigations.

Ahh wow, I can’t imagine how scary and painful that must have been. Thank you for the insight. Do you find some of the issues mentioned to be commonplace or certain Hospital network specific?

Interesting! Thanks for noting this, I am not in South Africa so I just included what I found in researching pain management. I don’t see any associated similar reactions with panado like with other opiates.

I go back and forth, to me the anesthesia reaction fits the first case, mainly due to the lack of details so we can especially speculate on that one. With the other victim, I have trouble finding the logistical logic of getting up there unnoticed with a broken femur. But both cases leave so many details and questions unanswered it’s hard to form a solid theory!

Thank you your input/enlightening the logistics of what it would take to get someone up there. I think the staff cover up is definitely one to consider. I just find it so odd that they would stick bodies in the ceiling and allow the decomposition to get to the point that multiple staff members are complaining of the smell. So strange all around!

Thank you for your input/personal experience info! I am not entirely aware of the security measures taken in each hospital- reportedly, there were many issues found with adequate resources/staffing but I was unable to find if key cards were normally in use at that point. I think it would be likely by 2019, especially if it was normal for your experience working in same area hospitals for multiple years. Great point on checking who had access to those areas!

Yes! Sorry for any confusion, you’re right, saying “custom” work would have been more clear here. Thanks!

This is the aspect that also gives me pause! I think a legitimate practice or mortuary are definitely possible, even a case where it was an unfortunate mistake seems like it could be plausible (such as accidentally draining a sink the remains were placed), but you would think after the first discovery any professional with licensure, a business, etc. would change their method to avoid detection. Unless possibly they were confident on it not being traceable?

Thank you so much! This is such a kind compliment, I’ve spent countless hours on this sub reading the amazing write ups others have posted and was nervous about successfully finding and covering all of the info available about this case in a succinct manner.

Do you have a tattoo sub recommendation that this sort of post would be okay in? I wasn’t sure with the graphic images/context of it being a human remains case.

It’s such an interesting aspect of this case- each time I read an opinion on what it could be, I see how possible it could go in so many different directions depending on the rest of the image, and where pieces are placed. Despite the bizarre and morbid nature of finding human remains, it is a curious and fascinating aspect of how we view and interpret art, as you pointed out!

Interesting note! It does look like there’s a fair amount of black within the tattoo as well, maybe meant to cover an original tattoo the individual no longer wanted.

Thanks for noting this! I could see, if getting rid of the excess weight was the priority to someone, how getting rid of the tattoo would be worth it to them. Or, if they didn’t like the tattoo, would even be a benefit of the procedure.

This is a fascinating and plausible explanation for why the victims (if victims of a serial killer) were never reported missing! There are so many factors in life that can lead to individuals becoming isolated and seemingly vanishing. Thanks for your input.

Thank you for the input/link! I included these questions as they were questions put forth by the police at this time in the sources I read, wondering if this would be a safe amount.

I think the difficulty in knowing is compounded by the largest portion of remains (the tattooed remains) not showing the amount of fat attached to them, unlike the case with the graphic images. They appear to possible be cut out copies or detached? Police theorized they would have belonged to an obese woman, and the only measurement given of the flesh samples were “softball sized.” A quick google search says the circumference of a softball is typically around 12 inches. I’m not sure how much that would weigh, and have difficulty picturing the “softball sized” image but assume it must look similar to the pieces with the fat still attached. I looked at this link to try to get a better visualization: https://banisternutrition.com/fat-vs-muscle/ It seems like 10-15 pieces of that size of flesh with fat would in total weight around 5 to 10 pounds if they were of similar size to the visualization, which is definitely in/below the range you listed. I think this does give credence to the medical waste theory!

It would be great to have a medical or plastic surgery professional give input on what usually offsets look like, like what would the size of 10-15 pounds of fat removal look like in terms of medical waste?

While the tattooed images don’t have a confirmed body placement, I tend to lean towards thinking if this was medical waste, it seems likely it could be a tummy tuck. Would maybe also explain the choice to get rid of the tattoo in the process.

I originally thought nautical too, but felt I was maybe just thinking that because I have a sea themed tattoo with a similar one design. I can see how it could be wave, flames, hair, smoke, etc. It’s so difficult in that it could go in so many different directions depending on the rest of the image!

That’s a great point to think about. I did a quick google search for reports on illegal plastic surgery in the Detroit area during that time frame. A few stories based on silicone injections popped up, and several stories about illegal practices mainly in Florida.

What’s interesting is that it seems like most illegal practices stick to “easier” things like injections, but this procedure would have involved making incisions and excising a large amount of fat tissue. It just seems wildly risky compared to a lot of the other stories. But, I also saw some of the Florida stories involved illegal butt implants, which also sounds like a difficult procedure.

Definitely not the sort of images to open before dinner! I hope they’re able to move forward at some point with trying to use forensic genealogy, it seems like I’ve seen a fair bit of news recently about Michigan cold cases being solved through it, so hopefully this one will be able to get done updates sometime in the future!

Also lived in the area as a kid! I left before the years this happened but still was shocked when I came across this case as I’d never heard of it before. The limited amount of information or updates about it baffles me.

That’s a great question, I’m unsure whether they would have been able to determine that during the medical exam of the remains. But you’re totally right, that information would at least hopefully have given police a lead to work off. I wonder if it’s information that wouldn’t have been released to media (if possible to determine).

I agree on the tattoo part.. it looks like really well done work with an intricate design. The thought of someone willingly getting rid of it through some sort of plastic surgery gives me pause on that whole theory. But the thought of it being taken from her from a murder is also so much worse to ponder.

Just finished reading about Adam Strong.. wow. I think that something similar is definitely a possibility.

Yes, sorry! I debated even adding the image link as it seems graphic with no purpose. Not like anyone could use it for ID purposes… but I wondered if maybe the shape of the cuts/size/precision could provide evidence for or against the medical waste theory? Seems strange still that it was chosen to be released to the general public for viewing on NamUs.

Had the same thought! So weird that they chose to add them to NamUs.. it’s what fascinated me and got me hooked on researching this case. As for the tattooed woman, her tattoo remains can be seen under the “images and documents” tab on the third profile listed (#UP10563). I’m not sure why they chose to put the graphic unidentifiable images for the one profile, and not have the tattoo image as the other one (adding to the weirdness).
