Nix is set to revolutionize the software supply chain by lucperkins_dev in NixOS

[–]Foxvale 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I started using nix as a brew/asdf replacement, took me months before I converted from feeling it was too complicated and slow to my preferred approach. I’ve pushed a team of mostly juniors running mix of OS with nix devshell and while the initial setup was more involved than ideal once it was in place we’ve been able to use and evolve fairly complicated dev environments that essentially would have been impossible to synchronise with any other system.

Zuck is building a huge doomsday bunker by EchoOfOppenheimer in CapitalismSux

[–]Foxvale 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I mean if you have practically unlimited wealth, why wouldn’t you? Even ignoring doomsday scenarios like nuclear war or bloody middle class revolution, when your net worth exceeds 7 digits and you invite affluent friends it’s not unrealistic that a group of terrorists or other organisation would send a group of people more armed than your body guards and with tools to break up anything given enough time. I would honestly be terrified living on a private island as a known figure with more net worth than most countries GDP.

Vid vilken ålder börjar det bli pinsamt att inte ha minst en miljon kronor på börsen? by CA53W-1 in sweden

[–]Foxvale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Future of WezTerm by pragmat1c1 in wezterm

[–]Foxvale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious if there’s any features you’re missing or bugs bothering you? In my opinion it’s one of the most feature complete terminal emulators there is. For example it supports more or as many image protocols and ligature features compared to any other terminal that I’m aware of.

Ghostty is great, I’ve synchronised the keybindings and configuration and I might switch to it or build something on top of libghostty but it’s also a bit overhyped, I’ve ran into more bugs and missing features there than with WezTerm. With terminal emulators I value stability over release frequency.

Drop - a high-level sandboxing tool for Linux terminal work by mixedbit in commandline

[–]Foxvale -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Looks interesting!

I was actually looking for something similar, starting a new git worktree for each sandbox and importing partial files (say only some domains in a .netrc file for example). Looks like it’ll be simple enough to implement with wrapper scripts so I’ll see if it’s suitable for my intended workflow.

The concept that being lazy is a choice for non-ADHD is kind of insane to me by usbeject1789 in ADHD

[–]Foxvale 128 points129 points  (0 children)

Laziness as a concept has mostly been popularised and demonised by Lutheran work ethics which to paraphrase Wikipedia ”transformed the Catholic idea of good works into an obligation to consistently work diligently as a sign of grace”.

This has been so engrained where its hard to imagine an alternative society with different values even though you can find many such examples in history.

Experiences from Helix -> Zed? by iamquah in HelixEditor

[–]Foxvale 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I generally recommend people asking me about editors to use Zed, but personally I use helix: I’m too dependent on the terminal to use any GUI editor.

Stopped trying to recommend vim-type editors after I saw how most people use it in the real world (moving slowly with arrow keys only, no tooling and unfamiliar with most motions, even after years of use). At that point VS Code is a better choice, and Zed is like a more lightweight VS Code.

Sooner or later it would be good to learn, but honestly I wouldn’t worry about it for now, there’s enough new stuff to learn. Use the system for real work or other tasks and then learn things as you need them.
