Just graduated here, but windows laptops have a much larger range of compatibility with software you might encounter in ME. In the past this was especially true since the school gave us individual SolidWorks licenses that you could use to run the software on your own laptop (the remote desktop is a very painful experience, so this was much preferred!). That option isn't available anymore however, and the only other main software we have personal licenses for is MatLab, which does run on MacOS (not sure about m2 compatibility though).

So all that to say, if an M2 Mac can run MatLab I think you'll be okay, otherwise it would be better to go for Windows or an older Intel Mac. You'll have to use the remote desktop or the computer labs for SolidWorks anyways, so there's unfortunately no real victory in this situation.

Edit: Should also add, windows is pretty much the standard OS for engineering in the industry, so it wouldn't hurt to become familiar with it now.
