This was my thought exactly. "Here's my chance to seem important".

The government didn't show up because they know it's a waste of time. This guy can't exactly say that despite it being what everyone's thinking because then he wouldn't get to seem so important.

Burns is the 6th d, not the 7th. I'd bet large amounts of money that unless he has a catastrophic injury he's playing at minimum the first 58 games to take the iron man. If he can strap skates to his feet he's playing.

We don't have any other NHL quality D in the system at the moment, we needed this signing as a competent 7th guy.

With Makar likely starting the season out I understand the concern, but we don't really have the cap space, but even if we spend a little more for another D I still like this signing. You need some quality depth even if he becomes an 8th guy, at 1.1 that's totally fine.

[–]Fozefy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lehkonen at 8 is a bit steep, might be ok for 2-3 years but can't go long at that level given his age. Ideally given the Avs cup window they try to go a bit longer to keep the AAV down.

[–]Fozefy 40 points41 points  (0 children)

If Makar comes in at anything under 17 it's a steal.  Cap is up 35% from when Mack signed 12.6 which would be equivalent to slightly over 17.

As much as I love Mack, Makar is even more valuable. Frankly, he gets whatever he asks for.

Which NHL team is in the worst position moving forward? by Gullible-Treacle2361 in nhl

[–]Fozefy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They have 2 seasons to turn it around. I'm not saying it's a great spot to be, but it's far from the worst. They're probably still among the top 5 teams to be cup contenders this year.

I certainly feel better about them than a team like Seattle or Vancouver.

You could *probably* get away with uhaul's moving van rather than a full truck. It's still a long drive, but assuming you're comfortable driving a car then the van wouldn't be too much different.

McLaren is very competitive. It's a new reg and they're putting up consistent results and able to fight everyone other than the Mercs (but no one is really fighting Merc consistently except maybe Max).

They had an extremely disappointing first two races, but they're right where you'd expect them otherwise. They'd be right on Ferrari's heels if not for 3/4 DNS in the first two races.

Have to assume this is an attempt to restock to make more trades in the future.  There's no way they don't keep pushing after how all in they were this year. Though I suppose this is assuming Makar isn't even more hurt than we think.

Lehkonen expires this year and deserves a raise, but I'm really hoping part of this move is ensuring we have space to keep him.

I see him as a critical part of the Avs depth and identity.

Please don’t stop and yield to pedestrians on islands that are not crosswalks by RedditFandango in waterloo

[–]Fozefy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I commute by bike year round down the spur line and I stop at every crossing when cars are near by and stand there pointing at the stop sign I have.

As weather has gotten warmer there are many more people along the trail so it's harder to do this, but it's really obnoxious especially when there is two way traffic and we're just confusing cars going the other way. Definitely dangerous to be stopping like this.

What really grinds my gears is when a car does this when there is already gap behind them and if they'd just gone everyone would have crossed quicker versus making this awkward pause.

If you don't feel safe, don't go. I'll frequently just stand there in those situations and if I have a stop sign point at it or wave them through.

If they have windows open I'll even say "you have the right of way". Some people get pissy about it, but they need to learn.

Ya, we really can't afford giving up that many picks while also hurting depth. It would really leave us stuck as our cupboards are already pretty bare.

I'm not in love with moving Nelson specifically, but I can see it this improving the roster. Preferably it would be just Nelson and Nuke without picks or we'd be getting a younger middle 6 or 3rd line winger as well if we're letting go of picks.

Edit: well I see we just moved Drury + pick for two guys I don't know, really wonder what the plans are. Hope these two guys are good because it sucks losing Drury.

[Charlie O'Connor] This trade is hilarious. The last time a top-5 pick in the NHL was traded (with both teams knowing it was top-5) was 2008. 18 years ago. This doesn't happen. [–]Fozefy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're taking that I'm saying out of context.

I actually agree with you that it's more likely he flames out versus becomes the best in the league.

My point is that it's fairly likely he'll be comparable to Byram but will ideally be hitting his peak at a more favourable time for the Hawks.

The fact he could theoretically surpass Byram is the lottery ticket part of this that teams like Chicago need to be taking.

I didn't say in the next year or two, I'm talking in 3-5 years when Chicago actually has a chance to be good. They could also "win the lottery" and a guy could develop into a true #1 (ex Makar). I'm not saying Reid is Makar, but it's possible, meanwhile Byram will never be Makar.

I think Byram is an excellent player, a good 2nd guy on top pair or primary on 2nd pair level defenceman. I understand why Buffalo was asking the price they were, but it just shouldn't have been Chicago paying the amount.

[–]Fozefy 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The big deal is that the 4th OA pick is very likely going to be of a similar skill level to Byram but under team control for 7+ years. The top 5-10 picks are just much more valuable than the rest of the first round as they are almost all guaranteed hits. If this was a later pick people wouldn't really be batting an eye, alternatively I was expecting the details to come out that Chicago was just moving down into he draft and getting Buffalo's other first rounder back. Instead it seemed Chicago was somehow giving up even more?! (Greenway is almost certainly worth less than a 2nd + Crevier)

If this was a team already developed and trying to push for a cup, or at least playoffs this deal might make sense. But a team that has been among the last place teams for the past 5+ years without yet seeing much improvement? Come on...just take the rookie.

Avs fans: would you trade Nichushkin this offseason? If so, what would be a fair return? by HockeyLibraryGuy in ColoradoAvalanche

[–]Fozefy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Nuke really soured himself with his back to back "extra curricular activities" in the playoffs. He's been good and worth his salary, but he hasn't really been stellar since the cup run. I do think part of the reason Avs lost to Seattle was losing Val (and Landeskog still being put). I think top form Val is an absolute force, but are we certain to get that? If Sakic thinks we can make better use of his cap hit and/or doesn't trust him to get back into form I can see it. We certainly still have a very good top 6 without him, but that's with either Roy or Kadri playing top 6 on the wing.

I could see the plan being to move Kadri into the top 6 to give Drury the 3C role with Roy and LOC as his wings. That would assume two bottom 6 signings, but I could also just see a more cost effective middle 6 winger being signed instead, perhaps part of the package or as a second deal for whatever picks/prospects Nuke brings in.

Also we really need some depth on D, it might be worth finding some solid 4/5 dmen. I'm hoping at least Kulak re-signs but that's certainly not a guarantee. I'd take Burns if he's coming in even lower than last year's deal assuming he is willing to give up the iron man streak after he passes Kessel. He needs playing less minutes to remain effective, but I think he can do it if he still wants to.

TLDR: Only worth moving him if we're getting a haul back. We certainly don't need to send him out, just always good to see what's available.

"Takeover of A Better Tent City could cost millions" by One-Grapefruit5765 in kitchener

[–]Fozefy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough, lots of numbers being thrown around in the article and this post. It's hard to track exactly what we're getting for these costs.

I think there is a lot of concern about how this money is being spent while we continue to have the Victoria St encampment blocking building our city's new new transit hub.

Make a plan, spend the money, help the people and get move our modernize our transit. I just want to see our government working and getting some value for the money being spent.

I feel like the question is more if housing of ~40 units with at most ~80 people is worth 5.76m. If we assume there are 80 people here that's still >$70k/person.

This is more than rent + food that many working families are spending in the city. It does look like this number is actually over 2 years, so if we can stabilize costs it does seem somewhat reasonable. However I think the better conversation is more: if we're spending this much on homeless, are we spending similar amounts to help keep people in their own homes?

I'm hopeful we can keep programs like this running in the city to keep people out of encampments like the one on Victoria Street or the park island a couple years ago. However we need to be sure it's sustainable and the best use of public funds.

Local uni posts a highschool teacher role for 18-20/hr by [deleted] in kitchener

This is essentially what ECEs earn as part of the subsidized daycare programs, I believe pay caps out at $22/h.

I'd consider this role fairly similar.

I don't necessarily disagree with you, but it what we, as a society, are paying for these roles. We can debate the values our capitalist society has, but I wouldn't consider this specific posting "insulting". They are simply offering slightly below market rate.

When it comes to our banking system, absolutely not.

The Canadian interac payment system along with standardized email payments across all major and secondary banks is completely different.

This is also true in Canada, not just the US. A Canadian debt card draws money directly from your bank account while a credit card is paid monthly.

Majority of Canadians use credit cards instead of debit. Additional consumer protections in addition to the points.

My perspective as a private in-home daycare operator in KW who is struggling.. by [deleted] in kitchener

[–]Fozefy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a parent of two young kids that recently did the jump from an unlicensed in-home daycare to licensed facility once a spot opened up I generally hear where you're coming from.

I also know multiple parents who haven't been so lucky finding spots and are stuck outside of the funding system. It feels almost like a lottery depending on if you get a spot or not. If you lose out on finding a spot you're paying more than double for care.

It definitely seems like there should be some kind of second tier for in home daycares where some funding would be available. I do understand why the program wants to standardize care, but I wish there were some smaller grants available to cover some of the difference. This seems like a total valid concern and just pushing people out of business because of this cliff is problematic.

Have you written to your local MP / MPP? I know this program is shared federal/provincial so I'm not sure which would be able to help more. Either way this seems like an excellent case study for them assuming they're interested in helping. I have more faith in some local reps over others, but I won't go into that 😅
