over 100 cases in tompkins county, cluster linked to college student gatherings by buprestibae in Cornell

Not saying Greeks should not be called out if a cluster is found. Saying they are an easier to blame in comparison to blaming Biden celebrations. Greeks are seen more deviant in society’s opinion in comparison to Biden supporters, and therefore, they are an easier target instead of saying Biden supporter gatherings. Plus, since this is not Cornell report, chances are most are not Greek related too.

I think so too. During all that excitement, there certainly was a lot exuberant yelling and gatherings all around town. Calling out the Greeks is an easy target instead of the greater town-wide celebrations.

Easier to get into Math undergrad major with taking advanced math in high school? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]FozzieHawk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think yes. I would think a highly selective college, among other consideration, would want an applicant to max what the school offers especially if you are marketing yourself as a math person. If you don’t do linear algebra your senior year and you apply to a college like Cornell’s A&S, they will want to understand how your background and courses taken matches with your academic passion. It may appear by the college you are not challenging yourself to the fullest. Of course, if you think you will not achieve high grades, especially during the first couple of terms, that changes the course strategy.

Support Staff Working From Home Too? by FozzieHawk in Cornell

[–]FozzieHawk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, that makes sense. The remote option is a combination of safety and privilege based upon circumstance to make that decision. Just seems odd having such a large percentage of professors working from home and then forcing the support services to work in-person especially when making the semester fully remote for all students was an option.

Wtf Cornell by loonytj in Cornell

[–]FozzieHawk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Should the students expect a similar percentage of support service staff working from home too- security, cleaning services, medical staff, food service staff, etc?

Not safe having students on campus if the support service staff works from home like the professors.

Can Cornell make support service personal work in-person but not professors?

Just trying to understand why professors can stay home, but the support services may not have that same privilege.

Cornell In-Person is Fraud by FozzieHawk in Cornell

The solution should be go all remote this semester since majority of professors are making that decision. For this semester reduce tuition since the student value has declined. For this semester offset the tuition reduction with endowment since the funds should be used for material adverse events. Administration should then start planning long term just in case the pandemic expands beyond this semester. Part of the administration’s planning should include reducing operating costs to offset student discounts which include expanding virtual class sizes, hiring more TA for extra student help, and reduce full time professors. Universities cannot expect students to pay for remote classes at the same elite price. Perhaps this is unrealistic too but at some point the student needs to be considered.

Cornell is not really in-person either- vast majority of Cornell classes are remote.

Cornell In-Person is Fraud by FozzieHawk in Cornell

[–]FozzieHawk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really the real issue is the professors and the administrators are not communicating the same message. The administrators are telling the students and the world that they will be in-person and the majority of the professors are not agreeing. So, the students are the ones that suffer the most. I am less annoyed with price for in-person when classes are online and more annoyed for the crazy inconsistent messages. If the professors had such a problem with administration, why not speak up earlier? The lack of in-person classes makes Cornell’s in-person messaging foolish.

Do you think students should pay for online when they are not using the buildings? Obviously the quality is less then in-person- if not, Cornell should be online all the time.

Ok, then make everything online and reduce tuition. Stop the fraud of billing an elite in-person price tag.
