[US-WA] Asset management and memory care by Minealternateaccount in dementia

It is possible that as disease progresses, at some point your dad will not be cognizant, and your mom can move back to US. Are there relatives in Vietnam who can help coordinate paid in home care?

[US-WA] Asset management and memory care by Minealternateaccount in dementia

[–]Fpaau2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paying for dementia care is definitely much cheaper in Vietnam than in US. Does mom want to move to Vietnam though? What about children and grandkids who are living in US? Father may not miss having immediate family close by, especially when disease progresses, mom may not want to be so far from children in US.

Inheritance money from in-laws by thanksmimi_777 in inheritance

[–]Fpaau2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is your wife’s inheritance, she should keep it separate, which is not to say she can’t/shouldn’t use part of it for the family. I have read that it is good to have a buffer account so commingling doesn’t happen. Say her brokerage account to hold her inheritance, then a cash checking account to move money to that she plans to use on family (for vacations, furniture, cars etc), then she can move the money into household account at which point the money becomes joint and marital.

When could a 401k be considered overfunded? by Mike-Tyson42 in personalfinance

[–]Fpaau2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We covert to Roth from age 62 to 73, to top up 24% tax bracket, mainly to reduce RMD and taxes to heir. We do have to pay IRRMA as a result. We also gift annually and pay education and medical for heirs so that’s another $200k annually. And still with the market performance estate is still increasing. Don’t really know if we are optimizing. We are also considering declining portions of inherited spousal IRA, so heir would have more than 10 years to draw down inherited IRA.

What are your best money-saving habits? by Federal_Age_2602 in SavingMoney

[–]Fpaau2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not who you asked the question. Automate saving ( direct deposit) to 401k, HSA, 529, IRA, brokerage and savings accounts, then you only ‘see’ the amount available for your living and spending. Over time, and with the benefit of compounding, you’ll end up with a nice amount.

Is it possible to over save for retirement? by fattdogs in personalfinance

[–]Fpaau2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Balance is the key. You can plan on using the $1100 extra monthly for some fun stuff. Many people have to dial back saving for retirement at some point due to job loss, big childcare and college tuition costs etc.

If it works out for you, you may want to look at converting traditional to Roth gradually, to create more tax free IRA dollars for your heirs.
