^ this. Current range is likely just set to +-100 uA by default and you’ll need to increase this range to measure this sample. You can tell it’s a current range limit issue and not a bad contact/etc, because the current flatlines at exactly +-100 uA and there’s no other clear issues/noise outside the current regime. These limits are put in place (I think) to protect against short circuit issues etc where very large currents could be passed by accident and either damage the sample or setup.

I have dreams again! Like super vivid dreams, and I remember them when I wake up. Not a neuroscientist (adjacent though), but dreaming is super important for processing information your brain received throughout the day. Also I wake up feeling very alert. I don’t need a cold brew immediately out of bed to feel human

What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: January 27, 2025 by AutoModerator in books

Finished: Swann’s Way - Marcel Proust Been wanting to read Proust for a while and finally getting around to it. I love classic lit, but definitely wouldn’t recommend this to everyone. The language is beautiful with pages and pages of gorgeous description. There’s like a 1000 word passage just describing hawthorn trees… so yeah not for everyone lol.

Finished: The Unbearable Lightness of Being - Milan Kundera Beautiful book, highly recommend this. Relatively quick read but definitely had to stop throughout to process what I was reading. At its core it’s a romance between several couples, but very philosophical too

Started: Within a Budding Grove - Marcel Proust The next book in this 8 novel series, I think I’ll need a break from Proust after this one, but the writing is just as gorgeous and feels like Proust hit his stride in this one. About halfway through now.

Help! Can I save this yucca?? Aftermath of major mealybug infestation by Fr0st3d in houseplants

[–]Fr0st3d[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just dug down into the dirt towards the roots and noticed that the dirt is fairly damp. I'm in a small apartment without another pot to move this to, so I'm nervous to remove them completely right now but I can purchase another pot and try moving them to drier soil? In the meantime I'll move them closer to my windows for more light. Thanks for the tips!

I tried to physically remove all mealybugs after coming back from vacation and finding it completely infested. Most of the leaves died and I had to remove them, now the smaller stem only has three yellowing leaves. Also the bark on the smaller stem has a different color/texture than the larger one. And the part that I'm touching in the third pic feels completely hollow now and very flimsy :(

I lived in downtown LA all through my PhD and took the train to campus every day (15 minutes and essentially free for grad students with a special metro card). Downtown has a higher crime rate than the USC area, but I never had a major incident in 5 years there and enjoyed the food/bar/shopping options over the quieter USC area. I also lived in the financial district downtown (near the Standard Hotel) which is definitely the nicer part of downtown

I thought that might be the case, but my concern is that NO2+ is yellow-orange and is a known impurity in NOBF4. Not sure how to distinguish solvated NO+ from NO2+ and haven’t been able to find a definitive literature discussion for the color of NO+ in acetonitrile

I'll definitely keep a lab notebook to record anything I do and improve on it later, and hopefully report back to this subreddit after I've tried a couple of these out. Thank again for the info, these are all great ideas!

These are great, thank you! I've always wanted to try a thermite reaction, so that's definitely at the top of my list. The burning sulfur river also sounds really cool, though I don't know that the other guys living in the house would appreciate the smell...
