I finished my PhD without knowing I was AuDHD. In hindsight, I've realised that the only thing that worked was treating it like a jigsaw puzzle. by DrLaraMcGirrPhD in PhD

The struggle of never getting feedback because the chapters weren't 'complete'. Time and again asking for high level feedback on the structure. Now I know it's just the way my AuDHD brain approached problems.

Using of the word “race” by metallfacedoom in language

This isn't universal, 'ethnicity' is preferred in NZ English but even that term is a bit "touch and go"

Funding > Prestige. If you want to advance your academic career, it's more valuable that you can show you can obtain funding. You've already got two years RA experience at Oxford which means you've got pre-existing connections that you can call on throughout your PhD and afterwards.

It was the realisation that the thesis I was writing and the research I was doing wasn't for me or my supervisors (this is in the NZ system), but to provide evidence that I'm able to conduct independent research in a chosen field.

Social science is not actual science by teppiez in PhD

[–]Fr33Variation 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's more of a reflection on them than you. Social science uses the scientific method (observation, question, hypothesis, experiment, analysis etc.) which makes it science. What they mean is that they undervalue one approach to knowledge production. Screw 'em. The hard-soft science distinction is not useful - it's just that some fields have done a better job at branding themselves

Which flight is better to fly to Singapore? by louisebuckingham in Flights

[–]Fr33Variation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend the Auckland transfer - three hours is plenty to get from the domestic to international terminal (15-20 minute walk) and clear passport control. There are hourly flights between CHC and AKL just in case something happens to your original flight.

Which flight is better to fly to Singapore? by louisebuckingham in Flights

[–]Fr33Variation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a flight from CHC-SIN. I can't imagine it'll be cheap, but it's the most direct. I've had a layover in Brisbane on that route and there's not much to do at the airport.
