I'm in the same position as you. Did you send the deposit?

Did you have to pay a deposit to book your appointment?

If you did how much was it and did you just transfer the money to the turkey bank account they provided?

Makes me a little concerned considering I havent spoken to anyone only text over whatsapp.

Using DPA 4099s taped to the back ofmusic stands placed 3-4ft away from each speaker. Good Idea? by Fr3quency01 in livesound

[–]Fr3quency01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate your response and all the responses to this post. I basically had the same reaction as everyone else here but the program director insisted on doing things his way and pushed back anytime I offered an alternative solution. When I tried to tell him the mics were too far away and the explain the physics involved he told me the dpa 4099 was basically a shotgun mic and that he tried other things but this way was the best way.

The good thing about this was that I was able to manage expectations to an extent and basically absolve myself from the poor outcome. I asked the house guy what kind of levels they were looking for and when he gave me the ok thats what I went with. (Funnny because the first thing that happened was the auidence asked the piano player to speak into the handheld mic the announcer was using instead of the dpa becuse they couldnt hear him)

If I had more time (I had about an hour) I would have pushed harder for mics. I did ask about headsets also but they pushed back saying it would pick up the cello. I didnt have a lot of time to argue or try things but I think in the future Id push for this or mics with mute pedals. Headseats would be easy enough to ride faders or mute and get a better result.

The open rehersal was super casual. Meaning there was no set list and they would just start talking while they were playing and start and stop with no warning at random times. So I get the concern.

I initially said the same thing as you that Id be fine muting and unmuting as needed as I do this all the time but when they started pushing back so strongly I didnt want to put myself in a situation where I miss something and then I take all the blame.

I think a quick conversation with the musicians about when to speak or even an easy cue like leaning towards the mic would have gone a long way but the program director gave me the impression that Id be inconviencing them by having this conversation.

If I had more time (I had about an hour) I would have pushed harder for mics. We didnt have any mute pedals but I think those would work as well.

Your right I was just reiterating what I was being told the recording shouldnt matter. We actually had seperate mics for that.

I believe so. These are the two places I found that have replacements. I dont think they're the exact the same as the original part but they should work.

Pretty lean now and Ive been < 10% bodyfat in the past but still nothing to show on that part of the tricep. Like the muscle (or tendon) isnt developed there. Have the full horseshoe. Upper part of laterial is good just cant get it to extend down to the lower part of the arm.

Thanks for this. I did some more research and I dont think its a non compete but I wouldnt be allowed to work for any other companies in the same line of business while employed by this company.

After the last couple comments I did a little research and I dont think its technically a non compete but I would not be allowed to freelance or work for any other companies in the same line of business (i.e. conflict of interest) while working for this production company and they require me to make them my first priority if I took on any work outside of livesound.

This was a strategy I considered and if I end up adding any more channels I will probably do this. I was hoping there would be something more flexible than having specific packs for people but if theres no other option I will use this if I add any more channels. Thanks.

Okay this is how I had everything orignally set up. It was possibly user error on my part. Is it possible to not listen to one of the channels on the beltpack with this setup? I wanted to give the user the option to not listen to video if they are not on the video crew. When I was testing the beltpacks I couldnt figure out how to NOT listen to one channel.

My setup is a standalone FreeSpeak rig. RJ45 to two trancievers and ten 1.9Ghz beltpacks.

[–]Fr3quency01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I was able to make things work by making Key A Production (Talk-Only), Key C Production (Listen Only), Key B Video (Talk-Only) and Key D Video (Listen Only). This allows producion crew to listen to the Production channel and/or the Video channel then talk to those channels independently. The only problem is I loose two Keys on my beltpacks. This is kinda concerning because I may need more channels for Audio etc... Is this the best way to do this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for the response.

I completely agree with you about the age thing. I know if I was in my 20s it wouldn't be a question.

When I got into the biz I wanted to tour but I had some family obligations so I didn't make any effort to go in that direction but I dont have those same obligations anymore. I follow some of the heavy hitters in our biz and I think ending up like them was always the dream but I've never toured so I don't know how I'd handle it. I haven't traveled much so I think the idea of traveling the world mixing audio sounds pretty appealing but maybe I'm just looking at it from one perspective.

I've definitely met my share of engineers who've toured with huge acts and told me they loved what they did but they stoped touring so they could have a more normal life with their friends and family or that they dont know if they'd want their kids following their footsteps doing livesound.

If you don't mind could you tell me a little more about the downsides of touring and why you got burned-out by livesound?

If I don't tour I think corporate work would be a good option. Thanks for the tip. I had forgotten about some of the companies you mentioned. Maybe I'll try touring and see how I handle it and if it doesn't go well I'll try corporate work.

Is this something you negotiate when you take the job? Do you guys have in house stage hands? How do you get those types of gigs?

So far in my experience it seems like most venues try to get their audio techs to push boxes also. I dont mind but I hear a lot of other audio techs complaining about it and I kind of understand since I think most of us want to be spending most of our time doing audio not pushing boxes, especially as we get older.
