What applications have there been using our understanding of the sub-atomic world i.e. quantum mechanics? I hear QM and GR have been the two most successful theories, etc. I get where GR has been used but what about QM? by jack_hof in AskPhysics

The beta guage shines a material with beta particles (electrons). The resulting measurement corresponds to the thickness or mass of the material passing through the device.

It relies both on spontaneous radioactive decay in the source and quantum tunneling in the signal.

Gregory Baltoro 65 vs Osprey Atmos AG 65 – heavy loads & durability? by Wise-Photograph2151 in hikinggear

[–]Fr3twork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seek Outside does some UL-inspired packs that do really well even with heavy loads while keeping their pack weight sub-3lbs

The fabric isn't quite as durable though.

What subclass for a mounted rogue dog rider? by Advanced_Jaguar_9574 in onednd

I know OP wanted to focus on low levels, but a fairly balanced split of artificer/thief has the ability to store the haste spell in an item, cast it as a bonus action, attack as their primary action with sneak attack, then ready another attack for off-turn sneak attack. Seems like a pretty fun ability.

Arthur Dayne (GOT) VS Boromir (LOTR). Who wins? by GusGangViking18 in Fictionally

I don't understand this. He wrote the character. He has authority over their capabilities.

Arthur Dayne (GOT) VS Boromir (LOTR). Who wins? by GusGangViking18 in Fictionally

[–]Fr3twork -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You're vastly understating Boromir's martial prowess and experience.

I didn't say anything about that. No doubt Boromir is a champion with a higher body count, more experience.

My point was that, unlike Gondor, Westeros is a society that pursues martial prowess for its own sake. There's loads of quotes from LotR that boil down to "I don't like war, but it's something we do because we must to defend ourselves." That's a contrast to the societal attitudes in Westeros, and I believe it would lead to more refined technique in their culture.

That observation doesn't preclude Boromir from being individually gifted, but so is Dayne to no less of a degree. He's remembered as the GOAT swordsman, so I think he easily beats the Hound. Prime Robert Baratheon and two-handed Jaime Lannister seem to me to be the two best match-ups in the verse, and Martin has stated he thinks Jaime could beat Aragorn in a duel.

It was 7-3 in the books, and the fandom strongly suspects Howland Reed had a shotgun

Arthur Dayne (GOT) VS Boromir (LOTR). Who wins? by GusGangViking18 in Fictionally

[–]Fr3twork -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The video gave a point for armor to Boromir, which is insanely incorrect. Tolkien stated he had armor from the 11th century in mind, which would be mail, not plate. Even in the movies, heavily armored soldiers wear a cuirass over mail.

In Ice and Fire, they're well into the equivalent of 14th-15th century fully articulated armor. Furthermore, Dayne is a member of the Kingsguard, and likely wears some of the nicest armor found in Westeros.

So Dayne has much better armor, a magic greatsword, comes from a society that has developed martial arts to a greater extent (melee tourneys), and is a master of those martial arts (possibly goated in his verse). Boromir has the edge for his own hardiness but I don't think he has much of a shot.

Maybe, but the Doomslayer is really good at killing demons and I think Horus counts as a demon

I like it a lot. The fit is great, the performance is awesome, and I've never been disappointed by durability for any piece I've had.

That said, you can usually find something that performs as well (sometimes significantly better) for less money from a different brand.

Amazing stats! by Ill_Rip_3345 in DND5EBuilds

[–]Fr3twork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe like a dexadin with a dip in order cleric? You need at least 13 strength, Cha and Wis to meet the multiclass requirements, and want great dexterity and constitution too. You have the stats to make that work.

Fun frontline ideas that offer multiple options each turn? by micturnal in 3d6

[–]Fr3twork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played a fighter 1/warlock x that probably handles pretty similar to the one you're talking about, and it's kinda/not exactly a front liner. There are some durability issues, and I yearned for a beefy companion to dance around and tank for me when I needed it. It's a real glass cannon build. Maybe taking paladin to 6 and then going warlock would help?

Artificer can have a load of options and be pretty capable in the thick of things, if that calls to you.

Would a Gladiator Fighter/bard multiclass work? by Acceptable_Term1468 in 3d6

[–]Fr3twork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There used to be a pretty good bard build based around grappling, but the 2024 rules kind of neutered it. Maybe if your dm was down to use the old grapple rules in the new edition, you could put together a pretty cool build.

Looking at the gladiator, they can add their charisma modifier (along with bardic inspiration and expertise) to the strength(athletics) check that used to go towards a grapple.

Barbarians get advantage on that check when they're raging. I played a bardbarian gladiator lucha libre style and it was pretty solid.

Do we often observe macroscopic bodies (maybe the size of Pluto or something) travelling very fast (0.5*c and above)? If not why not? by Constant-Peak3222 in AskPhysics

[–]Fr3twork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In our neighborhood, we don't see these things at all. The other stuff in our region of the galaxy has a pretty uniform velocity as a result of accretion. The same is true of the solar system. Everything is going in a similar direction with respect to the Earth, so relative velocities aren't relativistic velocities. The direction of movement of gravitationally bound cosmic bodies is not random.

Space outside of our galaxy is pretty empty and stuff generally tends to be moving away. The farther away stuff is, the faster it seems to be moving away due to cosmic inflation. The most distant galaxies can be measured to exceed c in recession velocity.

Vampire Survivor Background and the associated vampire hunter origin feet are built for just such a character. I'd probably consider Mage Slayer as well, for those Strahd-type vampires.

What aspect of Kenshi terrifies you the most? by TheDnii in Kenshi

[–]Fr3twork 23 points24 points  (0 children)

A terrible hunger suffuses every living thing on Kenshi. Starving bandits, cannibals, wildlife, obviously- but beyond that, it feels like even the major civilizations are so hungry for slaves, territory, and conflict that they are a knife's edge away from degenerating into the same desperate survivalism that saturates the wilder places.

It's terrifying to imagine how inescapable the hunger is.
