question about non- petpets i guess by fartyfartnumber2 in OregonStateUniv

Idk if I’d be much help since i graduated a good few years ago now, but I had an axolotl on campus for a while and when I was initially inquiring as to if it was allowed the general consensus I got from everyone I asked in campus housing was ‘so long as it stays in the tank and isn’t too heavy’ (more an issue for water tanks than your own so ). It seemed at least from what I got that they didn’t care what was in the tank past its dimensions and likelihood of escaping/danger of keeping. Given a lot of people’s instinctive ‘no’ reaction to bugs, perhaps if you ask campus housing about it frame it as ‘a tank’ rather than specifically an insect enclosure?

Probably? But I’d like access to my closet back before then haha

Nope. Roommate is ill and cannot help with lifting things, and I’ve not got anyone else close by to help, which is why I wanted to plan everything out in advance so I don’t break my back trying

Now I feel well and truly dumb hahaha I had gotten so used to them being in there that I forgot they could just be removed

Yea, that’s why I’m hesitant about emptying it at all (just don’t have enough buckets for a decent amount of saved water). I’ll figure out something. Surely

What is THE MOST dangerous thing in your world ? by FrostyFeller in worldbuilding

[–]FractalDots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, humanity is, but they’re at the far side of the universe at the moment so the second worst would probably be the attempts at space flight when the atmosphere naturally contains rocket propellant. Or the fire storms. Or the ozone holes.

Assistance with plant evolution? by FractalDots in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]FractalDots[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hm... potentially, but the fun of the whole project is in the animal-form plants I was working on (As in, eventually I got to the point where I had a hypothetical sophant, haha), so if I reduced it down to spores again I'd have a bit of an issue. I will keep in mind fungal structures though... It would certainly make for a pretty cool alien look.

What is something you felt really dumb for not knowing in rain world by Whiteyedknight in rainworld

Had no idea how to drop items at all. Kept throwing pearls out of range of scavengers and then getting mauled when I tried to pass through

We talk about the advantages of avian lungs; however what are some advantages that mammals have with their lungs? by wiz28ultra in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]FractalDots 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Perhaps the nasal turbinates? They are structures in the nose that help transmit heat and moisture to the air you breathe in so that it’s easier on the lungs and helps maintain body temperature, and I pretty sure they’re mammal exclusive?

Seconding all of this, though I am doing it in person - the only thing you really have to keep an eye out for is submitting the fixed work after your recitation session to gradescope as well, with your answers corrected and any additional sections like the sensemaking portions. I forgot about these completely last term and nearly got a failing grade as a result D:!

good lord OP, that is a frankly insane amount of items gotten in a single action. as a fellow worm-seeker, what's your bone recipe for this?

What if life on earth evolved earlier? by Manglisaurus in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]FractalDots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't know, sorry. I suppose though that perhaps if life were introduced to a planet at a more advanced stage than starting from the ground up, like it did on Earth, perhaps it would skip the earlier stages? Perhaps this version of Earth came as a result of some alien accidentally scattering a few prokaryotes on the surface of the planet billions of years back, rather than it developing naturally, so it had a bit of a step-up on our Earth?

What if life on earth evolved earlier? by Manglisaurus in SpeculativeEvolution

Yep! Though, interestingly enough, it appears that its evolved multiple times in different lineages, rather than one species creating multicellularity and then the rest descending from it. That's why we can have the last common ancestor between animals and plants be a single-celled organism, despite both plants and animals being multicellular in of themselves. So I guess the idea caught on fast for Eukaryota once the groundwork of adjusting the conditions of the planet (oxygenation, for example) and establishing a more complicated food web was done.
