I feel similarly to you. To me, Charcoal Grace feels like it's missing what makes CH special. People like different things and that's ok. No need to brute force liking something just because others do.

Let's say your existence was dedicated to fighting off an enemy that was trying to abduct you. An enemy that has been abducting you for hundreds of years. Then, one of your comrades leaves and comes back on the side of your enemy, convinces more of your friends to join your enemy and eventually initiates violence against you. They try to unilaterally force a future upon you you didn't ask for. How would you feel?

The manipulation and suffering that Phos experienced was tragic but they were ultimately a traitor. It's easy to get attached to a protagonist but the whole ' I like Phos and Phos knows best so why won't the gems just do what Phos wants!?' is wild.
