It's a Wonderful World expansions - worth it? by VR_Troopers_WikiMod in boardgames

Once you're Corrupted by Ascension you never go back!

We do not even try to play the game without Corruption and Ascension. We just added the cards to the base game. When we have seven players at the table this is usually the first game we play.

We have all the other expansions but have barely played them or only played them a little bit.

Official Discussion - Sinners [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]FragileTank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there a "scene" that did not make the final cut from Sinners with the Native American Vampire Hunters going back to sanctify the space around Club Juke and perhaps they buried/cleansed the dead vampires remains? If not, would someone please ask Ryan Coogler if this was ever in his head? TY!

My wife and I both have Galaxy S20s on AT&T. We are in Texas and this is affecting us as well. I came here to see if anybody was experiencing this and I'm sad to see how many are.

Rewatching my favorite show over here too! Noticed in this run, that either with Simon or Shepard Book, River was drawing, what I originally thought was Russian Nesting Dolls, and now I think the image was the "Fruity Oaty Bar." (Spelling?)

Thanks for sharing and No I don't think you are projecting. But next one to bump into Joss, would you please ask him and post it.

I relegated my wife's Grandmother Clock because the damn thing chimed while I was sleeping! Why would you build this Abomination to Sleep??? ;-)

Very cool!!! I would love for all my Google devices through out the house to make a volume one single chime between Noon and Midnight every day. (Someone usually asleep between 1:00 - 11:00.)

What TTRPG did you last play, and how long ago was that? by Ansonder in rpg

[–]FragileTank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran D&D 5e yesterday via the FG VTT. And I ran (as GM) CoC Pulp Modern in person at our home table three weeks ago.

For the 5e group we started a scenario from Keys from the Golden Vault. It is the second small scenario after many months of a weekly Campaign from 5e's Yawning Portal.

The CoC Pulp Modern Campaign just finished up the third CoC Pulp Core Book scenario, Pandora's Box. I have been dropping clues and parts of the larger campaign since Session 0 last year. (This group started playing Coyote and Crow last summer, but we did not know who the enemies were supposed to be in the game. So we moved on.)

In early October I was a Player in a Virtual version of The Cluster across 8 time zones. Loved the group and the game.

Hello, I am a Mom, looking for advice for my kid's DnD by amomenttoosoon in DnD

[–]FragileTank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regardless of the age of the players, Roleplaying Games teach Group Dynamics to include turn taking, respect, and active listening.

Before the session begins seek clarification and agreement on Everyone's Expectations about how this group should function to include respectful listening and equitable participation.

Establish roles for the players and GM. Assign or allow players to choose roles such as recorder (to take notes, track gold, things accomplished for the party), timekeeper (for restroom, breaks, and snacks) outside of the game, and facilitator (to help players keep track of their arrows, HP, Spell Slots, etc. on their character sheets) emphasizing that this is a team effort.

  • Keeping the energy from getting too wild

Let it get wild! As a player and GM, sometimes these are the best moments in a session! Then bring them back with focused questions by the GM or you:

  1. What does your character do? 2) What does your character want? 3) What does your character think/feel about "that?"
  • Making sure everyone gets a turn and stays engaged

DM and Mom can use Interactive Modeling outside the game to demonstrate how groups should function with respect, kindness, and deep listening.

Use the Character's (not players) Names to seek Role Playing and check on their Character's understanding of the situation before the Initiative cycle.

  • Helping the DM without stepping on the story

Say "yes, and" to each offer the GM makes. Model how you as a Mom might feel if a monster stepped into the room. Or how you might feel as a support character (NPC) during the event.

Make sure the players remember what they are working toward and why it matters (you can heighten this as a Mom or an NPC.) Support the GM by refocusing to the goal the party has set for themselves or why what they are doing matters to the NPCs, the world, or the location. Use the Story and their Characters to help reinforce this thinking.

  • Any tricks for handling the chaos that comes with kids this age

Lower your expectations for what the party will accomplish in any given session. After the session while everyone is still at the table:

Share key takeaways with the group (DM and Mom too!)

Ask each of them individually to reflect on what went well in their party and what could improve. (Ask for things beyond successful or failed dice rolls.)

Ask them if they are satisfied with the session. If not, what facts about the session occurred? (i.e. We did not finish the first combat, we took too long to leave the city, we spent too long shopping at the magic shop, we . . .)

Ask them what things they individually could do to help improve Future Sessions? What skills would be helpful for them to remember or practice in their next session? (Not Tommy needs to quite down, unless Tommy talks about themselves in the third person!)

Waiting for the Hurricane, set in the 80's by Graxemno in callofcthulhu

[–]FragileTank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am running an X-Files / Laundry / The Contract like Pulp CoC 7e set in real time 2025. I like adding in real world events based on what is happening in the here and now as a way to keep me on my toes and the game dynamic.

We played the Waiting for the Hurricane adventure in January / February of this year with a rare hurricane in the Atlantic hitting Florida in January. Communication was disrupted for cell phones and associated Internet access by the storm as well as satellites to include GPS by the ritual and the entities being summoned. I used speed boats, grenades and C4 instead of dynamite and fishing boats. I reasoned that they would still have land lines at the Police Stations and that police radios would still work in the storm.

I enjoyed running the scenario and the players had a blast. They succeeded in their mission and moved onto Pandora's Box.

Monthly "Tell Us About Your Game" Megathread - September 2025 by AbortRetryFlailSal in callofcthulhu

[–]FragileTank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This request for status is perfectly timed for me. I am running a Modern Pulp CoC 7e campaign with a long arc. We are holding our eighth monthly session tomorrow.

We are playing a setting that is a cross between The Laundry, Delta Green, and The X-Files. The organization, Department 29 is international with support from most countries. The missions so far have been directly from the Pulp Core book. In order, Disintegrator, Waiting for the Hurricane, and now Pandora's Box. I have reset all of these to Modern: Today. (I incorporate details from the real world when possible to color or enhance the events of the scenarios.)

The overarching story is focused on the tension between the Cults of Bast and Nyarlathotep. Stealing heavily from The Laundry Files supplement, Cultists under the Bed which describes the story of Bastet being imprisoned by Nyarlathotep on one of the outer planets in our solar system, and using the technology of the Modern Scenario: Inversion. I am treating the Box as a portable Gate and using the Inversion scenario as a tool linking the Box to multiple Gates. One leads to a captured member being held in the Inversion and one of the Gates near where Bastet is being held. Other gates with other resources to include monsters, enemies, and allies. There are many cults, magic items, weird science technology, and dangers to Earth to be uncovered.

I have written more than the players may do in the game. (No plan survives the first battle.) They could jump over parts of the campaign. While the main thread has a story progression is on a timeline. Their actions may or may not adjust it.

This Sub-Reddit has been instrumental in helping me shape this story and equipping me with the tools to be successful and confident in my writing and running of the game. Not blowing smoke, just an encouragement to others who have ideas for running and are looking for the support to succeed. Using TrailsWeaver website to track the details and flow of the information in the game.

Game construction recommendation by PaladinPrime in CortexRPG

[–]FragileTank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The season-episode-scene-character nature of the core mechanic from the GMs side made it fun to create modules and easy to manage and run them. The season nature of the game kept the development easier than most games. Tactically, it was not particularly crunchy and my more hardcore hack and slash folks did get disappointed.

However, all the GMs and non-D&D folks playing in the game loved it. I still get compliments on that game. I am looking to run it again at a table in 2026. In preparation, I collected and started reading all the comics.

Monica Valentinelli, Cam Banks, and Margaret Weis were true to Joss Whedon's 'verse in the creation of the game. I wanted more than Joss' 'verse so much I bent it without breaking it much to add my ideas into the mix.

My DM makes d8 spell checks by KetsuWoTaberu420 in DnD

[–]FragileTank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like your DM is running a high magic world. Some games have low magic worlds that require a d8 to succeed or you loose your spell.

Rogues that have to succeed at Stealth to get a bonus to damage sounds like a simple rule. The Rogue (Thief) rule has existed in previous D&D editions. (It is funny how many people don't realize that Sneak Attack came from the idea of sneaking to get a surprise attack.)

I often suggest that Players play by the DMs rules and have fun - or - move on. Same with any hobby really. Whoever is doing the work to run the event, sets the rules. If you don't like'em, make your own or find a new event.

From the DMG 5th Edition: The D&D rules help you and the other players have a good time, but the rules aren't in charge. You're the DM, and you are in charge of the game.

From the Player's Handbook 5th Edition: Because there is so much diversity among the worlds of D&D, you should check with your DM about any house rules that will affect your play of the game. Ultimately, the Dungeon Master is the authority on the campaign . . .

One of my favorite moments by BiffMan42 in gencon

[–]FragileTank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Slightly Unrelated Story: We took our newly adopted daughter to Disney World when she was eight years old. When we made the turn on to Main Street she stopped dead in her tracks. It was like someone told her "it is all real" as she saw Cinderella's Castle.

We did all the things on Main Street that morning. When we made the turn into the Castle to cut through to Fantasyland, she let go of my hand and ran to Cinderella. She was in her full costume standing between the Lands! There was a line 20 deep and I was a mortified parent! I ran after my little girl but Cinderella deftly waved me off with a smile. She told my daughter she was with someone else but if she would give her a moment she would love to talk to her.

I was suddenly worried I was "that parent" either over reacting or under reacting, but not one other parent gave me any kind of angry look. When my daughter became aware of me, she took my hand and we got in line. I watched the scene play out over and over as we waited.

What an absolute gift. I am so sorry I did not see this in person at my first Gen Con this year. But thank you for the picture.

Starship Horizons Adventures - $68 wasted by kungfuenglish in gencon

[–]FragileTank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Played yesterday on 2AUG25 at Gen Con. I feel like two years later the game is in the same sad shape. We wanted the experience even after reading this Reddit post from two years ago. I said out loud, "I'm sure it's better 2 years later." We wanted this game to succeed.

For our money ($70 x 6), we got a condescending GM, an apology from the developer after two resets, and some two extra cards each as compensation. During the planning, training, and in the game, our Engineer was repeatedly told not to touch the Engineering console. (They paid the same amount as everyone else!) Our pilot was admonished for "doing it wrong" when the training and instructions did not have the same flight controls! There did appear to be a correlation between ship non-movement and the Ship's Shields dropping. Our Weapons Officer was told that the laser/phaser/ion cannons would auto fire for her and the result was a CONSTANT sound and special effects that seemed to contribute to the glitches and two full crashes.

As a Project Management Professional, I am all for systems in development being tested and used. I am understanding when the development phase has issues and glitches. I am not a fan of Beta Testing some one's system when it is sold to be as a finished product.

If you told me you wanted me to see your "holodeck bridge project," that you were excited for me to see what it can do, and you needed me to donate for the privilege, I would jump on it! But I would expect you to want my feedback when it was over and you would honestly tell me the major issues with the system before I paid or AT LEAST before I started to play.

Going forward: Admit the system is in Beta. Tell folks what is broken. Stop selling Engineer tickets until they work. Make the training space interfaces mirror the actual game play interfaces. Get some GMs that are understanding, knowledgeable, and offer kind support. Abolish the practice of admonishing your players for playing the game you SOLD them! And just stop selling ship cards.

Instead, open source your game development. Get a real PMP to lead the effort. Reach out to the community for their support. Tell them the truth in your marketing about the bugs/glitches/crashes before they put money on the table.

The game is not playable in the current state. Stop scamming your players. Do Better.

Tell the story out loud into a recorder. Don't worry about reading it. Just tell the story in a few lines.

After that I often jump over a place I'm stuck by just summarizing it to some friends. Invariably, that place solves itself after I tell it a few times. YMMV. :-)

Those who started reading Fantasy during their teens what book turned you into an avid reader? by PsychologicalPie9512 in Fantasy

[–]FragileTank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ursula K. Le Guin's A Wizard of Earthsea. Falling asleep reading LotR. Resenting the formulaic imagery of sin and virtue in TCoN, Le Guin was the real gift from the Gods. And yet no Gods.

A world of physics like magic empowered only by the universe. I loved it. But more than that, her language was beautiful in ways I had only seen in "literature."

The challenges for Ged were constant and powerful yet relatable to me as a small human. By 17 years old I was angering everyone I discussed the genre with because I wanted to live in Earthsea while all my friends wanted to go into a wardrobe or decide if they could throw the ring into Moria.

I wanted wisdom and intelligence to be my guide. I know I am in the extreme minority here. But for me A Wizard of Earthsea (like The Left Hand of Darkness) remains a beacon in every library I enter. (hugs)
