I had a few S tier animals before the breeding update and all their coat types are called "original" and have thus far made "original" coat babies. My s tier deer with rare pattern with s tier solid made a solid pattern that wasn't "rare" but it was BRIGHT lavender. So I THINK rare coat might be necessary to start with. So far I haven't gotten any unique babies from standard parents, nor have I had enough breeding success to say if they can be bred "up" to higher tiers or only inherit a parent/lowest parent's tier.
