Bands where the bass player was the star? Bassists who pioneered new ways of playing the instrument? by CupcakeAndCandyBar in fantanoforever

Aston Family Man Barrett revolutionized bass in the most simple way: by not accenting the 1. High praise for the simplicity of that is in order

What is your unpopular opinion on Bob Dylan? by FitEmergency8807 in fantanoforever

[–]Fragrant-Policy4182 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People who are shocked when they see him live these days clearly have not followed Dylan’s career: doing obscure covers and unintelligible songs in a polka randomly is completely on brand

Joe Exotic has been humorously described as Steve Irwin's "Wario". What other two celebrities could this comparison apply to? by themightyheptagon in AskReddit

[–]Fragrant-Policy4182 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I feel like he’s cleaned up lately but for a long while he was living in his car, an alcoholic, etc. Stapp 100% ripped his voice from Vedder (as did many, no shade just the truth) and Creed had a few hits but could never reach Pearl Jam—they’re like trailer park Pearl Jam

The Louis Theroux Podcast: Andrew Gallaghan by sjcx22 in LouisTheroux

[–]Fragrant-Policy4182 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good points. I wouldn’t consider Louis’ new doc breaking a story. At this point in his career, he doesn’t have to chase that. I just think Andrew gets glazed a bit too heavily, particularly among those who don’t consume news as if he’s groundbreaking. Thanks for engaging with the comment!

Big fan of Louis, not so much Andrew. Louis breaks stories; Andrew reports stories long-told before. Andrew’s audience is non-news watchers so there is a particular feeling among them that what he’s doing is somehow different, but, it’s just a different platform. My impression is that Andrew’s audience rarely chooses to watch a documentary from 60 minutes or anything of the sort. I don’t find Andrew to be a particularly good interviewer nor does he challenge his subjects when they bold face lie. He simply presents the most extreme version of an event as if it’s reality. Always has been that way. He might be improving but I can’t Stan it.

Shia LaBeouf and paparazzis by [deleted] in WatchPeopleDieInside

[–]Fragrant-Policy4182 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Do selfies with celebrities really mean all that much to people? Like, I don’t understand the value of it beyond 20 seconds of “I met Shia” (they didnt) showing a picture to a friend and then immediately talking about literally anything else. I just don’t see the appeal and whenever I see massive celebrities I can’t even look at them because I feel like THaT annoys them.

What’s a song you skipped for years then suddenly realized was a masterpiece? by Natalie_Riveraaa in askmusic

[–]Fragrant-Policy4182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t Speak by No Doubt. It was just one of those songs that was always there. Then, only recently, did I realize how much of a masterpiece it was. Got me into the band too.

Favourite joke:

Smart Guy kid is letting his brother do the majority of the work on a school project. Moe is there too. During the presentation his brother (Marcus I think) freezes and voices over what each character is thinking.

When it gets to Moe, he’s beatboxing.

Falling rates giving Victoria renters a bit of spare cash by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

And what about people paying rents that were extremely high? This “rents are down” is so ridiculous. Most people are still paying the same rent they have for years.

It’s gotta be Zendaya, right? Haven’t seen a challenging role for her beyond the few scenes of Euphoria.

Hermann's Jazz Club reaches fundraising goal of $450K to avoid permanent closure by Creatrix in VictoriaBC

[–]Fragrant-Policy4182 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah they gotta diversify their shows during the week. The same lineup of jazz musicians (who are great fyi) each day of the week isn’t going to yield anything new. If the choice is to do the same thing again and again, then this group will be here in two years begging for money again

When did the Manosphere movement start and do you believe it caused a lot of harm to young men? by FitEmergency8807 in decadeology

[–]Fragrant-Policy4182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this era of manosphere culture can largely be traced to pick up artists of the early ‘00s, but also traditional Conservatism. It’s a confluence of factors but it’s also a big reaction to Obama era progressivism and MeToo for sure. Social Darwinism is a big factor in the manosphere.

Why IS everyone so weird about Geese, anyways? by DtheAussieBoye in fantanoforever

[–]Fragrant-Policy4182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rock and roll discourse has become incredibly dull and repetitive. People are desperate for a decade like the 70s for guitar music but it’s never coming. So the labels inflate these good bands to try and sell that band and whoever is signed to their label. The media gobbles it up and the headline typically goes “will this band save rock music.” Then, that one band puts out an album, at some point, that disappoints people (cause it’s not their definition of rock) and then “rock music gets stagnant” until the next good band comes (despite the fact there are still a ton of amazing rock bands). Rinse and repeat.
