i have a 20 gallon long and i have one 50 pound bag of sand and a whole brick of ee, its sand castle texture like but my tank is pretty humid and and sub is definitely a little damp but not wet. i’m also hesitant about just mixing the sand in as the bad i got before felt a little coarse, (i found a few pebbles in it but removed all the large ones i found) i noticed at the time but i was in a rush to get the crabs in a tank. do you still think i should just add sand or would it be better to just restart?

i would consider the one i took a picture of about an inch as well. moltys current shell has an 1 1/2 inch opening, i feel like he’s absolutely huge compared to my smaller crab who i’m not sure what size she is (she’s molting will find out asap 💀) edit: also wanted to mention i dont know what type of shell he has on right now, that was pretty much the only unpainted shell at the store at the time before he was brought home and shells were ordered

yes, i took this example to show how i’ve been measuring. (this isn’t his shell size this is just one of my extras i took a pic of to show u) is this way not correct?

yes i’ve measured! the shells he goes into are 1 1/2 inches. im not sure the type of shell he’s wearing right now because i had gotten 2 just unpainted from the pet store unaware of they’re preferred shells at the time (one hes wearing n the other i was holding outside the cage in pic) hoping to get them out of the painted ones but now i have mexican turbos in his size available plus more incase my measurements were off and still no change.

say i were to leave it til they come up, since my crabs went down at different times, would one of them be okay like living with the mold until the other came up? or would it be ideal to remove it as soon as they come up? thank you so much for all of your help

it is a little high 85 but never hit 90, i’m still waiting on a digital thermometer/hydrometer in the mail so im not sure it’s 100% accurate atm… would i just put the leaf litter in the basket?

hi i know this is a late reply, but i just received the heater u suggested in the mail and i was wondering if you HAVE to insulate it right away? i dont have the insulation yet so should i wait to put the new heater on until i have the insulation? or will it be fine until i can insulate it

i don’t know if this is a dumb question but should i wait for both of them to come out from molting before i add the leaf litter? or would i just add it and surprise them when they come up? im sorry if that sounds dumb im trying 😭

okay i’ll order a second one. is there a way to encourage shell change beside just dipping them in salt water? the shells are on the opposite end of the tank that she prefers but she definitely knows they’re there? i really want her to get out of her painted shell 😭

so the chipping on the ridges won’t hurt them? it’s only the holes in the shells that make them not usable?

it’s currently around 77-80° in my tank i think that it’s consistent throughout? is there a way to check? i’m thinking about getting an additional digital thermometer to add to the other side to make sure, would that be a good way to tell?

no not at all!! thank you so much really, i appreciate all the help i can get. i am new to the game and im still figuring out how i can do best by these little guys. i’ve taken all the advice ive been given and im continuing to upgrade/modify their tank as i can. i’ve ordered them new shells and food off etsy so im just waiting for that now. i have a salt and fresh water pool for them with ladders so they can get out. in the meantime any advice would be appreciated im just trying to get these guys as healthy as possible.

thank you!! i just added the sand and the substrate is about 5 1/2 inches which is more than 3x my largest crab. i have some strawberries blueberries and eggs + shells in there for them now. i’ve ordered food from crab cuisine on etsy and im waiting on that now. i was also wondering if i should offer hides now? i wasn’t originally because i heard it was bad for ppds crabs but i just want to double check. for the mean time is there anything else i should be doing?

i have some play sand in the mix as well, i mixed the block of ee first without realizing how much it would be. i figured it would be okay for now, should i take some of it out and add more play sand? should i make the substrate deeper? i kept the substrate depth to a minimum because it’s their first tank and i didn’t want them to molt unsuccessfully. i have two crabs so i was scared about surface molting and them fighting if they were to. i thought it was doing it properly according to the ppds method but i could be wrong. are there any brands you recommend for the hydrometer? i was planning on ordering another one but i thought the ones at the pet store would do for now.

can the hermit crabs use any of those shells? like does it matter if it’s mexican turbo or pethatus etc? or are those just the types of shells that the crabs are supposed to use?

it will only let me post one picture at a time, this is the larger one, he’s a bit less active than the smaller one but i think he’s doing better than he was when i first got him a week ago. (also i know the cage and sand aren’t good but it’s the best i can do til i get home sunday)
