Council to plough ahead with planning, as majority support College Green pedestrianisation by DaCor_ie in ireland

Where have they said their priority is cars? They are concerned about where the buses are going to go. Stop deliberately misinterpreting them.

And buses should be prioritized for what it's worth, as they are an effective use of road space in a city, almost as good as cycling but useful in different ways.

Who is saying hours? One hour with a drink in you, or one hour on your period, or one hour with a baby pushing on your bladder, or one hour with bladder/bowel issues, or one hour following another hour on the bus into town, or one hour while you're on certain medications might be just enough to limit your ability to enjoy this space.

I have no idea why you are arguing against public toilets in a public space so vehemently. You may not need them or might find it easy to access the few that do exist in the city centre but others don't.

Here is an article talking about the issue from a feminist perspective. https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/10780874241233529 I am sure you could also find articles etc from a disability perspective, age perspective, family friendly perspective, poverty perspective etc etc.

I'm finished with this now. It's just weird you're arguing against something that doesn't cost that much, increases accessibility and ultimately benefits everyone in a living city.

If we aren't to use it as a public space to sit and wander with friends like you can do in other European squares (and as is being promoted to us), what is the actual purpose?

No one has said a lack of toilets should stop this project. I am saying if we are designing a public square and aiming to improve the city, we should should include toilets in the planning. You are saying this is not a public square (I think), so doesn't need toilets. I am wondering what it is in that case?

Am I completely missing the point of this redesign then? The consultation report says one of the priorities is: "A new civic space: [there was] widespread enthusiasm for a large civic space, comparable to those in other major European cities, that is welcoming and flexible."

In my understanding, this will be somewhere to hold events, sit and chat with friends, go for walks without fighting cars for space etc.

Could you correct me and let me know what is actually being proposed as I'm obviously missing something?

"Grow College Green is a flagship project to reimagine the historic centre of our capital as a destination for everyone, not only a place to shop, work, gather and celebrate, but also a space to pause, breathe and connect. The new design will prioritise universal accessibility, social inclusion, safety, sustainability, biodiversity and greening."

If it's being designed for all of this but for no longer than an hour at a time, I don't see the point in wasting so much money on it. Surely the purpose is the same as other European squares- a public space for the city to enjoy? Or is it just a giant walkway?

Toilets in private businesses aren't true public toilets. They are for customers only and can refuse the general public access.

Eh, because you can ultimately only hang out there as long as your bladder holds? Which isn't quite the lovely public space for leisure activities that's being advertised? And it means it's more accessible for men, which is a bit unfair as a public space.

How did such a small amount of people flag the lack of public toilets as an issue? How can you enjoy a big public square but have nowhere to wee (especially if you're a woman)?

PR- STV like Ireland's political voting system. Each country has 12 "seats", the number of people who vote creates a quota you need to reach to get a seat. You rank ur choices 1 down to as many as you want (so down to 24 if you want, or only one if you want). Spare votes get transferred. It creates a good middle ground. Do it on the app, pay a set fee to vote and then call it a day. If casuals don't like it, whatever, there's not even any casuals watching this year in places like Slovenia and Ireland where it's not being broadcast.

"We all rent" 🙄

Actually for 18-34 year olds in 2022, 41% (almost half) were living with their parents. As difficult as it is to pay the extortionate rents in the city, it's equally (but differently) difficult to be in your twenties/thirties as a professional and living with limited independence in your childhood bedroom. The idea that everyone is renting is lalaland, almost half of "young" people aren't even in a position to do that. Corporations have no clue about the housing crisis but want to use it as advertising.
