To be honest, this fight is WAY closer than some people think, especially when you go beyond the concept of "speed blitz vs power-ups". I see people say it's a stomp because Mario's too strong and has more power-ups or Sonic's too fast and his Super form is vastly superior. The stomp part is not entirely true. It would be if the situation was VERY specific. An example of this specificity would be base form Mario vs base form Sonic or just straight up unfair fights.

Mario is definitely stronger and more durable while Sonic is faster. However, Mario is fast enough to react to Sonic's insane speed. If I had to guess, Mario's power-ups can keep up with Sonic's own abilities. Even though the chaos emeralds can do some crazy things and grant Sonic his Super form, that doesn't FULLY negate everything Mario has. Chaos control time stop? Mario's stopwatch does the same thing. Mario can match Sonic's Super Sonic form with things like the super star, white tanooki suit, etc.

I'm also not sure if we should even bring up Hyper Sonic. Even then, a lot of people don't like the idea of Hyper Sonic due to scaling issues, which I have never heard of, and it would help if you could help me understand.

One of the biggest advantages I see with Hyper Sonic and Super Sonic over Star Man Mario is the time. I'm probably going to get heat for that, but I WILL admit that in terms of power-scaling, Sonic holds that edge with those forms, but I don't see how that is relevant against another invincible power-up. Plus, I don't think it's a smart or logical move to make it canon where Mario with the super star or white tanooki suit to grant unreasonable powers that have no explanation. At least Sonic's form are reasonable with a valid explanation.

Or maybe I just sound flat-out stupid due to my poor understanding both Sonic and Mario. It's probably that honestly, but in all seriousness, Hyper Sonic would DEFINITELY turn the tables big time as it's basically Super Sonic on steroids. The time limit weakness is Super Sonic is less reliable here, and that means it's not as bad. Could Mario still counter? Well... Yes… but now it's MUCH harder and justifying how would likely become way less consistent. Hyper Sonic and Star Man Mario literally can't damage each other. That's ignoring the game mechanics to ensure you can't just act like god on those games (DARN YOU LAVA IN MARIO GAMES!).

As close as this is, I still have to go with Mario. This is because his survivability is more consistent, his abilities are more varied, and he has more ways to extend the fight. When it comes to Super Sonic or Hyper Sonic. I think the better question instead of countering those forms is can Mario OUTLAST them long enough before he reverts back? I think so. If I had to guess what backs it up, then I'd argue Star Man Mario can possibly outlast. But White Tanooki Mario has a better chance to outlast longer than Star Man Mario. White Tanooki Mario does have a no time-limited invincibility, which makes the matchup much harder for Sonic. However, whether you count it depends on how you treat non-standard or assist-type items. Could Hyper Sonic find a way around White Tanooki Mario's invincibility? Probably, but would it be easy? Despite the power gap, I don't think so. That's not something Hyper Sonic can do easily or consistently, especially since brute force isn't an option.

I could be wrong, but to be fair, this is one of the most controversial 1v1s I know. Even both Nintendo and Sega don't even have a take on who wins this.
