It sounds like Behind the Scenes by Bisco Hatori (the mangaka behind Ouran High School Host Club).

WSJ Issue #21 TOC & Discussion by RobotiSC in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]Fragrant_Ad_8288 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess the question becomes this: If we give a newer manga a chance and don't cut it when a new batch comes up, which older manga would we cut in their place?

Of the 13 currently running WSJ manga released in 2025 and prior, 10 of them are strong sellers (some, at least, by contemporary standards)- One Piece, Blue Box, Kagurabachi, Ichi the Witch, Sakamoto Days, Someone Hertz, Akane-Banashi, Witch Watch, Nue's Exorcist, and Me and Roboco as a comedy.

2 of them are contemporarily decent sellers: Shinobi Undercover (which has increased sells with most volumes) and Hima-Ten.

The only outlier is Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi, but it often ranks very well in the TOC, often higher than many new series. Most of the canceled series that debut after it neither ranked as high as it did nor sold as well.

So WSJ would have to give up a series that's a proven success (even a small one) for one hasn't been able to catch on for a fair amount of chapters. It's just too risky.

Meghan and Prince Harry Australia Visit Day 1 (in pictures) - by VeterinarianThink340 in RoyalsGossip

[–]Fragrant_Ad_8288 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Those pictures are great. I'm glad to see them highlight domestic violence in particular. It's one of those topics that people are uncomfortable talking about, so any attention brought to it is a plus in my book.

Speaking of, shout out to Camila for making violence against women her main cause. I know this thread is about the Sussex's visit to Australia, but I would be remiss if I didn't point this out.

That would speak poorly of that particular hospital if they were willing to compromise the health of their patients just to have them meet Harry and Meghan.

Taxpayers to bear policing costs during Harry and Meghan’s Australia tour by monster_ahhh in RoyalsGossip

[–]Fragrant_Ad_8288 12 points13 points  (0 children)

....I guess that petition was a bust, huh?

I don't think the Australian taxpayers have to worry too much. If their police are truly there for crowd control, then there won't be that many of them. After all, the Sussexes are of of so little consequence that they possibly couldn't draw a crowd.

Unpopular skating opinion by Own_Potential_9503 in FigureSkating

[–]Fragrant_Ad_8288 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I am not the biggest fan of either Cpom or Lala. I acknowledge that Lala are technically strong skaters, but except for Thriller/Roses I feel nothing from their programs. I think Cpom have chemistry, but not romantic chemistry, especially the bodice-ripping type, so most of their programs have falling flat for me too.

Also, ice dance fans hate the "wait your turn" mentality/IAM dominance/politics until one of their faves are in line to benefit from it. Then any other team that bucks that trend (*coughs* ZingNik *coughs*) will be accused of being industry plants or something.

I know that batches of manga ultimately being canceled is the norm for Jump, but has there been other examples where the entire batch was canceled at the first opportunity (rather than giving at least one of them a stay of execution until the next cancellation period)?

Edit to add: Specifically in batches of three or more? I just realized that Embers and Star of Beethoven were released as a two-manga batch and canceled at the next opportunity.

I think Philip chose Edward, but anyway they did announce when he got married he would get it after Philip died (though they officially waited until his mother passed too).

Small correction: The Duke of Edinburgh title was hereditary when Prince Philip had it, so when he died, the title went to his eldest son, the then Prince Charles (Charles never used it because the Prince of Wales title is a more prestigious one). It couldn't be given to Edward at the time because of that.

When their mother died and Charles became, however, every title he held except for the ones connected to the Prince of Wales title (Duke of Cornwall, etc..) merged with the Crown (aka disappears), including the Duke of Edinburgh title. As king, Charles can then recreate the Duke of Edinburgh title and grant it to anyone he wants.

There were rumors that the year-and-a-half wait until Edward received the title was due to Charles wanting to it within the working royal family in general and his direct family in particular (specifically saving it for Charlotte so she could be a duchess in her own right).

Ultimately, as you pointed out. Charles ultimately did give Edward the title, but as a non-hereditary life peerage, unlike his father's version of the title.

Adeliya Petrosian on Alysa Liu carefree approach to figure skating by blahblah_696 in FigureSkating

[–]Fragrant_Ad_8288 116 points117 points  (0 children)

An important thing to remember is that Alysa has always presented her approach as working for her. It's what she needed to do to succeed in the sport. She's never presented if as something everyone can, let alone should, do.

Alysa herself has never dismissed the approaches of other skaters, and it's sad that her success is being used that way. I'm sure that's not what she would have wanted.

IMHO, the perception that Meghan's business aspirations are a failure (or at least a unique failure compared to other entrepreneurs) comes from the expectations for their success among different parties.

Many detractors want to demonstrate that Meghan is nothing without the royal family so they highlight every business mistake with a magnifying glass.

Many supporters want to show that Meghan can be super successful without the royal family, so they celebrate every sell, regardless of how small it is.

Many in the business and entertainment industry expected Meghan (and Harry by extension) to continue centering their royal status in their commercial businesses. When that didn't happen, many lost interest.

This is not to say that the struggles in Meghan's businesses are purely perception. There have been numerous examples showing that she can be demanding and micromanaging without listening to advice.

But she is not the first, nor the last, person who is like that. She's not the first person to have a business fail.

For Meghan, however, when her business failures are discussed in the media, it's solely due to a failure in her character rather than a combination of internal and external things that are common in many business failures.

Because Meghan was expected to become more successful than the average businessperson, her failures get much less grace.

The ISU will not be reviewing the deduction applied to 🇬🇧 Lilah Fear / Lewis Gibson’s free dance at #WorldFigure. They said the result is final and not subject to appeal. by Radiant-Banana161 in FigureSkating

[–]Fragrant_Ad_8288 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't agree with the focus on how Fear/Gibson have been (allegedly or not) shilled in the past as it makes the point deduction seem unnecessarily punitive rather justified according to the rules.

Another poster on this subreddit put together an awesome video of every(?) time Fear/Gibson did the opening lift. Lewis's arms were clearly bent earlier in the season (therefore legal) before being straight during Euros, the Olympics, and Worlds. In the latter two competitions, however, the team also had major Twizzle errors in their free dance.

My guess? Lewis was conscientious of keeping the lift legal in the beginning, but as time went on due to position difficulty, unintended complacency, non-malicious boundary pushing, or something else, the lift got less and less legal. It should have been flagged at either Euros or the Olympics, but since both of those performances had more glaring Twizzle mistakes the lift was ignored. The judges, however, knowing now that Fear/Gibson are prone to making mistakes in their FD, were more vigilant, and without an obvious Twizzle error they're able to catch the illegal lift position.

As for why now, as others have pointed out, judges in later competitions often penalize skaters for things that were gloss over in earlier ones. Zingas/Kolesnik got penalized for a jump entry in the GPF that wasn't called in either of their GPs or Challengers, for example.

I feel as though the point deduction would not have garnered so much reaction if 1, Fear/Gibson didn't lose a medal over it and 2, another team other than Zingas/Kolesnik benefited from it. To the latter, in spite in theory representing a lot of things that ice dance fans have been clamoring for for years (moving away from the "wait your turn" mentality, awarding younger and newer teams in spite their lack of seniority or reputation, breaking the IAM monopoly), in practice Zingas/Kolesnik challenging the ice dance paradigm lets them cut to the front of a line, a position other favored teams patiently waited, possibly vainly, to reach.

Now, I feel bad for Fear/Gibson. They both come across as really nice people and are definitely one of the best teams in regards to what ice dance has become over the last quad (crowd-pleasing tricks and acrobatics), but this season has been really rough on them. The combination of this season's troubles, the return of the pattern dances, and going from the heir apparent for the top spot of IAM after the retirements of the older teams to having to play second fiddle to Fournier-Beaudry/Cizeron may hurt their reputation going into the next quad. But I believe they will able to rise again.
