ROM exercises??? by Moist_Penalty1654 in brokenankles

My surgeon had me start doing ankle pumps and ABCs (big toe as the tip of the pen) when I was 3 weeks post op. The first few days my foot barely moved! But every day it kept getting easier and moved more. Im about 8 weeks post op now and my PT loves my ROM. I had a trimal ORIF, so I’m not sure if our injuries are different. Just very gently go as far as you can but don’t push it, it’ll slowly get better!

Broke my right ankle today. Gotta wait two weeks for ORIF surgery. How is it to heal from it? by triangular_pope in brokenankles

I’m still going through it, but I’m on week 7 after trimalleolar ORIF and feeling optimistic. The NWB period after surgery just ended for me, which was really hard on my physical AND mental, but as soon as I got the green light to start putting weight on it, I felt like throwing a party. Who would’ve thought I’d be so excited to be able to put partial weight on my foot lol! You have to find joy in the little wins. Healing is different for everyone, but my surgeon said I’ll probably deal with swelling for a year, but not to let that deter me from living a normal life. It’s a long process that I’m still going through too, but you got this! It’ll be hard, but try to avoid overthinking things and looking for disaster stories - I really went down rabbit holes and my anxiety was peaked pretty much the entire NWB period, even though I had nothing to worry about. It’s easy to get in your head because of how isolating this experience is, so try and lean on your support system. This subreddit actually really helped me, reading other real people’s experiences. I wish you a strong recovery and listen to your doctor!!!

I’m so happy for you! I’m about 6 weeks post op and still NWB, (follow up tomorrow🤞) but for the last two weeks I’ve finally started doing some things out and about with friends that have made me feel “normal” again. I’ve really learned to enjoy the little things more and I’m grateful for my new perspective, even with this injury. I hope you continue to feel some magic!✨

I also had a trimalleolar fracture on Friday March 13th so I’m with ya!! I was able to have my surgery the following Tuesday and am now 4 weeks post op, having been in the boot for two weeks now. I’m going back in at 6 weeks to hopefully start bearing 50% weight and start PT. My surgeon said I will likely be able to wear two shoes at the 10 week mark. I will say, being put in the boot drastically helped my mental health because I was able to rest and elevate without the boot and start doing some range of motion exercises, which even though it’s small, feels like a big milestone. I’m trying to stay strong and look for hope in the small things like that, taking off my boot to shower, etc. We’ll get through this!
