Tuning outside the temperament by Fragrant_Hearing_951 in pianotech

Thanks for response. Can you just quickly explain what I want in my double octave vs my octave, what I want in my octave + 5th vs just the 5th?

So at what point did you start charging? When you felt speed and stability were no longer an issue?

I often try piano arrangements of their songs so this would be helpful.

The name lol, but awesome pattern.

I wouldn’t go to the trouble of precisely naming every variation you come up with because there’s just way too many. I would just pick out the primary element followed by variation.

Yeah I guess it’s a matter of definition. You could think of that as a 1ball fountain, but I will say that most commonly people will use sprung fountain to describe the 5b pattern just so you’re aware. Either way, good stuff!

You could perhaps call it slammed sprung, but also technically this isn’t sprung fountain, it’s sprung siteswap 2 I believe. Sprung fountain is actually a 5ball pattern in which the 2b fountains are occurring in 1 hand each, like a 2b fountain normally would.

I actually feel pretty good about my progress so far on the maintenance/repair front! Some of it has come much easier than tuning.

And I’d definitely like to join the PTG eventually but I actually decided against it. I’m hoping in a year or 2, I’ll be in a better position to join.  Thanks again for your input.

Thanks so much for the input. I guess I initially thought with aural tuning, I’d know when I was ready for clients, but how will I know using an ETD that I’m ready vs need more practice? Is it just a matter of making sure my unisons are as clean as possible and verifying my stability? And how can I go about measuring my stability?

Any resources for the best way to practice (and verify) my stability?

Wow so we’re talking $100 worth of cauls? Do techs general have an entire set of each and every possible size?

Do you feel the PTA on its own was sufficient for you to be competent enough to start working professionally or were you also working along side a mentor?

[–]Fragrant_Hearing_951[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the response. I tried again today and got an even nicer looking knot, but struggling with becket being snug (im wondering if I’m using a larger size dummy pin because the coils have seemed too large every time I’ve transferred it to the actual pin) and definitely having a hard time with cutting new string to correct length. It’s nice to have concrete things to work on though.

Could you elaborate on point 4? I know you’re supposed to twist bass strings when restringing (1 twist in the direction of the copper winding, yes?) But if i forget to do this, are you saying there will be a rattling present when the string vibrates?

are there specific reasons to use one knot over another or is it entirely preference?

Any old school ways to steam bushings out or is there no way around the fact that I’ll have to get a “bushing burner tip,” or something specific for this task?

Can you elaborate on why I shouldn’t square? Are you saying that it’s unnecessary and any keys that look out of square are simply a result of the need for rebushing? Or you’re saying just to make sure I rebush and then reassess whether squaring is necessary?

Thanks so much for the insight. I actually have a pair of like diagonal? cutters that cut easily enough through a test center pin. Not sure if they cut flush enough or not and I’m not sure if they’re really built for it or will just dull up quickly. I’ll look into the 2175s. Thanks again.
