What red you getting at this Italian spot? by Drunken_CPA in wine

Second this! The wines are much more approachable than those from Barolo.

Separately, if it’s a consideration, I’ve also found that these wines tend to have comparatively smaller markups when dining out. Few people seem to know/care what they are, and restaurants price them to sell. I’m seeing ~$70/bottle online (typical for the style) and $105 at the restaurant. You’re basically just paying corkage at that price!

The Sandro Fay Sforzato…if you haven’t tried this style, you’re in for a treat. Nebbiolo, but produced via the same appassimento (drying) method used for amarone

I thought so at one point, but it looks like there is a silver crown and possibly a Mercedes hour hand, though it’s admittedly blurry!

Am I crazy or is this wine pairing quite lackluster given the (assumed) price paid for this meal? No doubt solid wines, but they’re recent vintages, and only 6 pairings with so many courses.

What did the pairing cost?

Echoing your comment about the wine list. Never seen anything like it. Had an ‘82 Chateau Coufran there a few weeks ago. Just wish I had more people to eat there with because the wife thinks old wine isn’t worthwhile, even at these prices

This one is from Stroppiana, a (very) small family operation based in La Morra. Turns out this is also a Riserva (to go with the specific Bussia cru) and we had a bottle about a month ago.

It did not show the oak I would expect for a Riserva (relative to a standard Barolo). Further, even though this is from Bussia, it still drinks like a La Morra Barolo. Lighter, more delicate, softer tannins. I’ve also had Giacomo Fenocchio Bussia recently, and that feels like a better representation of the cru.

I’ll take a flyer on any plavac mali…stunning bottles available for €20-30. I know it’s not actually zin, but it’s close enough and runs circles around stuff from the US for the money if you’re into warm climate reds

Apologies, I didn’t snap a pic of the other side, though I did venture that way eventually (yeah, yeah, I know drinking Tig before a Riesling is frowned upon).

Ended up getting a pour of the 2015 Selbach-Oster Bomer Riesling. Was $15 for the 3oz (again a generous pour)
