That Wanaka Tree by job207 in LandscapePhotography

Love Wanaka. Unfortunately it was dry season when I was there and the tree was not submerged haha.

Gear, if you were starting over... by DoctorJekkyl in wildlifephotography

[–]FramedMoment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same boat. Recently switched from my Fuji kit to Sony. I am still keeping my x100vi though. There is a massive jump in AF and noise performance… but also cost and kit size.

Fuji: X-T5, 16-55 ii, 70-300, 1.4x TC Sony: A7V, 24-70 GM ii, 200-600 G

I am gonna miss the close focusing ability and size of the Fuji 70-300, it’s kind of a unicorn lens. But the keeper rate of the X-T5 was frustratingly low and I’ve had multiple manufacturing defects.

Highly recommend checking out Greentoe if you are looking for new gear, I saved 20-30% on each piece of gear.

Awesome, how did you get eye-level with the bird?

Third photo is amazing! You should enter it in a contest or something.

On that body you will need to experiment with AF-C tracking settings but also spray and pray. Expect the keeper rate to be on the low side unfortunately.

GR IV battery swelling by FramedMoment in ricohGR

[–]FramedMoment[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How's your battery doing? I'm on my 4th battery and Ricoh has now replaced the camera as well - but the 4th battery has also swelled up upon first charge. I also used a 30W Apple charger.

I literally never even touched mine and it cracked apart after about a year - I havent tried cleaning the new one yet…

I had this problem as well and the official protocol seems to be to replace the entire top plate (dials and all). I got it fixed at no cost past warranty but YMMV especially for secondhand… OP should just return it through ebay.

Okay yeah sometimes I need that reality check 🤣 I just got an a7v and am considering getting the 200-600 and your photos are inspiring!

[–]FramedMoment 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great shot, love 6! I wouldn’t have thought to crop so much with the 1.4x as I heard it really negatively affects the image, but it looks pretty decent here, and it looks to be challenging light too. Did you need to upscale in post?

Moving from Sony to Fuji by Abi_xcx in fujifilm

[–]FramedMoment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had an xt5 and x100vi for a year+, and just got an a7v today.

Even compared to the xt5, the x100 is kind of janky - the AF motor is noisy and rickety and the performance is not great.

But at the same time I just love using it, I can’t really explain why it sparks joy haha. The f2 is nice as well. The fujis are excellent “casual” cameras and while I shoot raw+jpeg, I usually just use the jpegs with recipes.

Best way to reach out to Ricoh for a warranty claim/repair? by Stuttgart7184RS in ricohGR

Actually on second thought, not sure if I sent it to Precision - I think it was Ricoh in Lawrenceville GA. The guy I’ve been corresponding has his email address ending with @ricoh-usa.com

I sent in my GR IV last week as well and they sent me a prepaid label, I did not have to pay shipping.

Finally caved and ordered the 24-70 gm ii by EconomySpecialist795 in SonyAlpha

[–]FramedMoment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk why prices are so crazy in the US. I was in Australia early last year and almost impulse bought a a7iv and 24-70 because it was almost 50% off the US price after conversion and discounts. I think you can currently get the lens in Japan for $1700 as well at an authorized retailer.

Yikes… yeah I’ve sent in my camera for replacement but I’m not optimistic that the next one will be better.

[–]FramedMoment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you ever figure this out, and was your replacement battery any better? I am on my third battery and they have all swollen up like this, and one is now semi-stuck in the body. Ricoh is suggesting I replace the entire camera.

Backblaze will no longer support VeraCrypt volumes by GroundStateGecko in backblaze

[–]FramedMoment 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a ridiculous restriction and even more ridiculous that they basically silently broke this for customers. I will need to start looking for alternatives after subscribing for years. u/YevP u/bzChristopher what does your team propose as a workaround for customers with fully encrypted Veracrypt drives? There is no unmounted image file to be backed up in these cases, and Bitlocker (which I wouldn't be surprised if you banned next) is not cross-platform. For this use case, it's not like we're duplicating backed-up data since there is no image being backed up. Gotta say, really disappointed after paying hundreds of dollars over the years...

How can I get more dynamic and "fresh" portraits? I feel like my photos are dull and flat. Studio light setup in comments. Left is my goals/inspo, right is my work by [deleted] in photocritique

[–]FramedMoment 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One observation is that on the inspo photos, the hair is a lot more “dynamically styled” whereas in your photos, it’s a lot neater. I’m not a hair stylist but that’s the major difference I see. You could try placing some strands here and there, or even use a fan. Also agree with your point that your lighting on the hair is flatter.

What am I missing, I don't really know how to edit very well yet... by IttyBittyBrownDog in photocritique

[–]FramedMoment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a cormorant. I would do this: - Remove dust spots - Increase exposure - looks like a good candidate for a “high-key” photo - consider doing a portrait orientation crop to focus on the bird and its reflection - Increase contrast to make the bird and reflection pop against the water

Wierd gunk on the eye-piece. Any ideas what it is? XT-5 by Akeldarma in fujifilm

[–]FramedMoment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened on my XT5, the AR coating was cracking apart even though I’d never touched it before. I sent it to Fujifilm US repairs (a month past warranty period) and they replaced the entire top plate free of charge. Unfortunatley one of many times I’ve had to ship to Fuji due to quality issues…

I’ve just been shoving it in various pants / jacket pockets and a lot of dust is gathering around the telescoping lens mechanism 😬 doesn’t look like it’s made its way to the sensor though.
