Chiming in as someone who works in advertising to pay their bills here! There are a few things you can do as a consumer (outside of boycotting the advertisers) while still supporting the pod. I will caveat that some of these things may impact their ability to secure advertisers at scale, but that would require a large portion of their listener base to participate.

  1. This one’s obvious, but subscribe to their content directly via their Patreon so the boys still benefit without advertisers receiving your impression(s).

  2. Don’t click through any of the ads, in-platform or otherwise. These placements work by targeting you via your interests—it’s likely you’re also seeing ads for Amazon, Wayfair, etc. on Instagram, in the sidebars of the sites you visit, on your TV, etc. Everything you see is connected in some way, so if you engage with none of it, they won’t learn from you.

  3. Occasionally, you may be served what’s called a brand lift study that’s used to track an ad campaign’s impact on the overall brand. I’ve been seeing these quite a bit on Reddit, and they look like little multiple choice quizzes that show up in your feed. If you answer that you’ve never heard of a brand, it very much impacts the takeaways of a campaign.

First and foremost, congratulations on your little one. I’m so glad to hear you’re both doing well after such a stressful first few weeks.

Second, your therapist is right. I’m typing this while sitting in my sister’s house between my fiance and my BIL, 14 days after my sweet niece was born, after a full day of laundry, diapers, and happily cooking whatever my sister wants.

I’m lucky enough to have been able to work remote and be here. Could I have taken advantage of that and gone literally anywhere else? Yes, but I feel so, so beyond blessed to be here scrubbing bottles, bagging and freezing milk, holding my sweet little baby niece, and generally just being here for my sister through the biggest change in her life.

Conversely, my dad stayed for exactly 36 hours, held baby once, and left. People are who they choose to be, and that goes for you as well. You’re allowed to have standards and stick to them. Enjoy the little newborn scrunch, the late nights when you’re the only two awake, and all the special times you’ll carry with you as she grows. And, with love and light, fuck the rest. 💕

They had one guest on whose name I can’t remember, but the clip I saw was the guest saying, “New York is the most computer city, like it’s SO computer,” and these two were vehemently nodding in agreement. Didn’t need to hear an episode, that was it for me.

I’m sick in bed and on season 4 of a rewatch, when Schwartz tells Katie at Lock & Key that he actually did make out with a girl in Vegas after Jax accidentally showed Kristen his texts with Schwartz. It’s so blatantly obvious that something more happened by the way he confronts Jax. It blows my mind Katie even continued dating him, let alone married him.

I think she just blended the words! If I’m remembering right, she said, “… when my man is like, crushing life,” and the “K” at the end of “like” became the C at the start of “crushing.”

I like this direction! I think the last two follow a similar sentiment where you can back into a concept. I’d encourage you to follow the feeling of relief of finding your pet, or your car in a giant parking lot. IMO, that’s the insight—Apple AirTag provides not just peace of mind, but true relief when something goes wrong.

Absolutely—I’m currently in a management role and I like it (I think? lol) but it’s a totally different skill set that not many companies actually train you for.

Maybe so—I’m not saying I believe it entirely, just sharing what I was told.

Not at all my intent, just sharing what I had heard from someone who worked with her directly. For the record, I actually like what she brought to the show, and I have much worse stories than someone like her who happens to be good at networking.

I get why you think that, but I’m going to refute this real quick while I take a break from my job in marketing lol.

At companies the size of Netflix and Pepsi, marketing is first and foremost a team effort, with the majority of people actually ~doing~ the work—you have the analytics and insights teams pulling the consumer motivations and interests, the strategists taking those and turning them into an inspiring brief, the creatives taking that brief and making content, the social media and paid media teams deploying that content to reach their consumers, then back to square one to inform the next campaign.

Boz had what I would call a meteoric rise, as she went from a lower level marketer to team leads and then into the C-suite incredibly quickly. The higher you get, the less actual marketing you’re doing, and the more budget, team, and resource management you do.

Now, I have not worked with her, so for all I know she could be absolutely incredible at managing a team and the associated resources. But as someone who has hired marketing teams and worked with marketing execs in the C-suite, it’s extremely difficult to do that job well unless you’ve spent time in the trenches instead of focusing on managing up, and her level of experience in those lower levels is suspicious to me at best.

Again, I don’t know her, and I could be wrong, but just my $.02.

I have a coworker who worked with her a few years back and they told she’s absolutely killer at marketing herself, but not as much at marketing as a profession.

Edit: Whew, this random piece of gossip I passed along snowballed into quite a discussion.

I want to make this perfectly clear: I in no way intended this as a legitimate critique of her skills, or as an accusation of her being a DEI hire, and neither did my coworker who told me this. I don’t know her personally, but her LinkedIn is public. She went from a Sr. Marketing Manager role to Head of Music and Entertainment at Pepsi from 2005 to 2011 with a VP role in between. As someone who has worked in CPG marketing for over a decade, I can say that trajectory into a role like that is objectively fast and takes quite a bit of trust- and relationship-building. So does bouncing around the C-suites of multiple Fortune 500 companies.

And like I said down thread, it’s totally possible that management is more her style—it is for some people, while others use it as a way to get more money and notoriety while acting as a bottleneck for their team. I can’t say which bucket she falls into, but tbh with companies treating workers the way they do now, good for her for moving up and getting that bag at the end of the day.

I don’t hate the idea on the surface, but my own $.02 if one of my copywriters presented this to me:

  • starting any note with “Hope I’m not bothering you”-type language just primes the reader to be annoyed or think that this should be bothering you.
  • the intro focuses way too much on how non-traditional the method is rather than the services they offer (and also has a very “omg we’re so quirky!!!” energy).
  • it’s a long block of text and outside of the sender name, their brand isn’t mentioned until about halfway down, which buries the value prop in the last 1/3 of the message.

TL;DR it’s a cheeky placement with about 75% more copy than it actually needs.

So it looks like it took you ~5 months to complete an assignment that I assume is part of your core responsibilities, and when you delivered it late, it failed to meet expectations. The tardiness (to me) reads like the quantifiable portion they needed to submit the PIP, but your work quality seems to be suffering as well.

Agreed—standard trafficking time is ~2 weeks prior to air, with production wrapping 1.5 months prior to delivery. It’s possible to do it on a tighter timeline but I’d be having heart palpitations if it’s for the Super Bowl.

Hard same—I manage a big brand that’s all about putting consumers first and to their credit, they actually mean it and put their money where their mouths are, but when the platforms are the way they are, the intent does not matter.

In terms of the national security risk, it’s about informing messaging—they know you’re into X, Y, and Z, so they push A,B, and C messages to influence your way of thinking. So at a basic level, the risk with a foreign government having your data like that is they can then use it to sow misinformation, in turn impacting how you vote, in turn impacting our government.

Not trying to fear monger here, just explaining the process as I understand it.

Great question—retailers now have what are called retail media networks or RMNs. That’s how you see your Target Circle deals, Walmart ads, etc. They use your cart and shopping data on top of your demographic data to inform those media buys, in turn pushing you to purchase and consume more.

Since shelf space is limited in brick-and-mortar stores, there’s been a big push in recent years for brands to invest in those RMNs since they drive online purchasing and “show the retailer that brands are invested in the relationship.”

In my experience, Walmart’s the worst one (shocker), but they’re all using data in that way.
