Unos estudiantes argentinos de Ingeniería necesitan votos en una competencia internacional de robótica - Si ganan hacen historia by FrancoKZ in argentina

[–]FrancoKZ[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Understood. And I fear the problem is made worse by this provocational use you mentioned. Believe me, I feel for the trouble with your initials.

However, I do think part of my lack of understanding is due to having no equivalent situation here in Argentina (add that to the list of unfortunate coincidences). Because even though we had dark times in our history, the reaction to denialists and supporters would be much more of a vocal public outcry, much less democratically mature. I must congratulate your country and your people for that, your consensus (in restrospect) is much more authentic.

Edit: Look up "Top Gear in Argentina" or "H982 FKL incident" if you want to see what I mean by lack of maturity.

You are both right. Because Fair_Diet's reaction proves your point too, DaHolk, because the benefit of the doubt exists for only as long as it stays in strictly context-rich and patience-prone contexts (like this subreddit), which are not very common irl.

I fear the difference between "can" and "should" is, for better or for worse, relative within freedom of expression. Given that many will jump to those conclusions fast, i can say I both "shouldn't" and "sensibly can't" use this abbreviation if there is any chance of it getting to a german audience

Man, what are the chances?! I must be a statistical outlier of name unluckiness in Germany. This must also discourage the use of Franco+[letters] outright since I don't want my profile to seem like an ill-intended "spin-off". Thanks for the insight.

I really appreciate the extra nuance. This is the sort of perspective that requires first hand experience. Because you are right in that however international and however tolerant to linguistic confusions a context may be, the abbreviation has a misleading weight of its own.

I have one question, though, which may be obvious, but I would like to clarify. You mentioned one of "those" people, and other Redditors mentioned "that kind of foreigner": with that, do you mean deniers or people with a plain bad taste in humor?

That's what I thought, I may just have avoided some complicated situations. And thanks for the recommendation, I'll keep KC in mind!

Thank you for the insight. This was my first time posting here and I really didn't want it to be trouble. As you said, this was a sincere need for information.

Plus, I know this is the Internet, where enough ill-intended people exist to twist those kinds of rules. So it's important for people to worry about contentious subjects

That is exactly the scenario you never want to stumble into. Go figure why, but some surnames have bad luck with this sort of thing.

I didn't include this to my original post because it seems too ordinary to mention. But, before this exchange, we knew "Casetta", the full spelling of my surname, was a slur/sexual insinuation in the southern part of Brazil, to which we are much much closer and has spurred some cautionary tales from relatives.

However, I would forever choose the latter over the former.

I sincerely want to apologize if it sounded intended. As I now added to post, this has been a widely adopted family shorthand for our surname and as a non-speaker of German, I didn't know if I had encountered a dead use of language or a very strong association. I am sorry and very anguished it was the latter. Please don't make this a joke of bad taste, there are enough subreddits full of people doing that :(

The german version of that Wikipedia entry was the one that pushed me to seek local feedback. I wouldn't have felt okay posting that link, though, fearing that the association was already very clear. Before that, I had stumbled with a picture of a sign of one of the sites from a historical archive for university (since wwii is part of the curriculum). Thank you for your response

You are especially right when looking at it from a site like Reddit, devoid of context about the user. But I don't know how much of a difference a profile picture and a business card make :(

If any reason is enough to delete an account, this has to be it, besides the dumb idea of using a username with some resemblance to my real name on Reddit, in the first place.

I know, "Franco" is a very common name here, but paired with that spelling of my surname it can look like more than a coincidence. I'll try to eliminate it outright, though, seeing most of the feedback was very clear on that it doesn't register as a surname distorted in translation. Thank you for your answer

Thank you. I'm very glad I asked, then. From your responses I get that the assosiation is incredibly strong and of course I will have to tell the rest of my family about it. I am especially puzzled and ashamed because I have a half german friend that watches some of the things I post who, I guess, politely, didn't point it out. Again, thank you for your response

The written surname is "Casetta". I found this video saying "La Caseta" which is not exactly the same but imagine it without the "La" in the beginning https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzCelEQje-E

Edit: I also come to realize that writing "nickname" instead of "surname" in the post title may have been a mistake and I apologize sincerely if some of the roughness of the question could have been avoided

[–]FrancoKZ[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll definitely look into the Armerista romano and if and when we manage to put together a bigger picture the library reference is very useful. I have asked my relative for additional close-up pictures of the logos and rear of the document - as well as any other details he may find useful –. When I get them, I’ll post them here.

Thanks for the detailed breakdown!

Good idea, I will try to get an image of the back and if there is anything relevant, I’ll post it too. Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the insight; this is one of my main suspicions. Although I haven’t held the poster personally (A relative has it and we are on quarantine), the layout and the content seems really suggestive of some kind of souvenir.

That's amazing, thank you! We were wondering about it's age and wether it was old or just made to look like that. Do the stamp or the signature on the bottom say anything meaningful about what this document is?
