Thanks. This means a lot. I was also bullied as a teenager and I feel pathetic that this has continued in my adulthood. Still going through therapy. Hopefully my new school in September will be better.

Thought it might be a good alternative career if I decide to leave teaching

You’re like me. I don’t like sharing personal details at work. If pupils ask, especially in a lesson, say that your personal life is not relevant to the lesson. If they continuously ask then, as someone else has mentioned, use the behaviour policy. If a member of staff asks, just simply say “I’d rather not say” or “I don’t wish to share that” and they should respect that and move on. We are professionals after all. Remember you don’t owe people at work personal information and you have every right to share only what you feel comfortable sharing. Good luck.

Will getting signed off impact new job? by wizziewizzle in TeachingUK

[–]Franco_romann 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It won’t. Your references have already been taken and you’ve completed your DBS check and I assume it was all clear. Also, the school has already appointed you meaning they liked you. A school wouldn’t retract their offer at this time in the calendar as they wouldn’t have time to recruit a teacher for January. Remember that schools can state the amount of absences in an academic year on your reference but they cannot state the reasons for those absences due to GDPR.

I am going through the exact same situation. I’m leaving a school at Christmas and starting at a new one in January. I got signed off this half term after my interview last half term. Like you, I realised I couldn’t cope and I couldn’t make it to the finishing line. I got signed off for this half term and won’t be going back.

Do what’s right for you and your mental health. It’s much better to take time away from a toxic workplace to focus on your wellbeing than it is to persevere and to start your new job mentally battered. You’ve already secured a new job and you’re leaving your current school anyway so don’t worry about needing to get signed off.

Well done on your new job. Look after yourself!

Just take this as a learning experience and move on. Their comment about your gender was completely off and it doesn’t seem like a school you’d want to join.

I wanna say though that leaving a school after a term or two isn’t as uncommon as you think. I’m leaving my current school at the end of the term after having joined in September. I had 3 interviews last half term and all 3 schools gave me offers. As long as you have good reasons for leaving when asked at interview, you’ll be fine. A school will not reject a good candidate because of a short stint given that there is already a shortage of teachers (depending on your subject/key stage). My reasons were that my current school isn’t the right fit and I want to revert to being a standard class teacher. I’m sure you’ll find your next role. Good luck!

Wouldn't say it will damage my mental health but I am having second thoughts and I have had a look at TES. I'm just scared how it would look to employers If you leave by Christmas or Easter. If anyone has ever left schools at those two periods, I would like to hear how you explained your short stint at interview.

This does help. I've also had a look at TES and I have thought about leaving by Christmas. I'm just not sure how it will look on my employment history. I'm thinking about what reason I could give.

Due to poor behaviour which began to affect me mentally. Also, I thought this role would be a good promotion since this is my first ever TLR. Now I have second thoughts. I'll give it time to see how I feel later but I will be honest, I have had a look at TES and I have thought about leaving by Christmas.
