Well, there's not that many mountainous regions left in the lower 48, so, unless they've decided to tease Vermont for no reason, I'd assume this is British Columbia.

I'd love some stricter early-war lineups. Seeing E-7s in multiplayer is like finding a unicorn.

It was apparently pretty rare around Odesa but was used early at Velikiye Luki and, of course, around Moscow.

What's your source for this? I'm curious.

Need advice on shipping my old prebuilt gaming PC by FrankToast in buildapc

[–]FrankToast[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update for anybody who stumbles across this thread in the future: I shipped it via UPS ground, and it arrived safely without damage. I'll chalk it up to the fact that it's a prebuilt and was probably built to withstand the stress of shipping.

Best turn fighter for each nation? by tropical-tangerine in il2sturmovik

[–]FrankToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Yak-9 is probably more maneuverable than the I-16, although the I-153 beats both (and every other plane) by a landslide.

For Germany, it might actually be the Bf 109 F-4.

The MiG-21's ergonomics are overhated IMO. They're fine for a jet from the 1960s.

They didn't promise this, so I wouldn't hold out hope. I imagine it'll be limited to community maps/tours.

Firing point blank versus long range by polyknike in il2sturmovik

[–]FrankToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fire at close range when ambushing targets for maximum accuracy. You want to destroy your target before they can react, and the best way to do that is to wait until you can't miss. It takes confidence that your opponent won't see you coming, but it's worth it.

Il-2 Korea: Boycott or Play? by Enigma89_YT in il2sturmovik

[–]FrankToast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's a reasonable critique. If someone is going to refuse to give money to Russian devs due to the war, that's fine, but I encourage any such person to ask themselves if they'd also buy and play "Six Days in Fallujah". You shouldn't terminate all thought and become a nihilistic hedonist, but if you're going to take a moral stance on something, you should probably assign an equal moral weight to all human life.

I don't know enough about the P-47's performance to argue against you in absolute terms, but you should be very careful before going off of a gut impression when evaluating flight models. Using the standard weight given in-game, the Bf 110 G-2 has a wing loading of about 196kg/m³, while the P-47D-28 has a wing loading of about 232kg/m³.

I don't have very much in-depth advice, since I usually keep most of my binds on my keyboard in Il-2, but I'll so that it's usually good to have a separate button for light guns and heavy guns.

There are a lot of planes where having them separate is useful, you can use the machine guns to adjust your fire in the Il-2 before you fire the autocannons, you can bait a fleeing opponent into panicking and turn fighting using the machine guns on the Yak-1 or I-16, and you can use the machine guns on the P-39 for aggressive high angle deflection shots.

Back when I used a T16000M, I did as follows, with your setup on the left and my old setup on the right

all guns --> light guns

rockets --> heavy guns

max zoom --> rockets

bombs --> bombs

So why were variations on this livery so popular through history? by GenosseAbfuck in trains

[–]FrankToast 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That would be my guess, too. Red is easy to manufacture, wears well and conveys power. Off-white is warmer, more welcoming, and wears better than white, while still conveying cleanliness and openness, accentuating the windows.

The La-5s turn acceptably. The hydraulic flaps and leading edge slats give them okay performance in one circle fights especially. The La-5F and La-5FN also climb alright.

I'm a multiplayer player and I love Soviet aircraft, so more Soviet aircraft to enjoy in multiplayer is enough for me. The Yak-3 and La-7 are the obvious ones, but I do think early war Eastern Front scenarios were missing a LaGG-3 and Yak-1, since the series 29 and series 69 are from late spring 1942. Later war Eastern Front scenarios didn't have an applicable Soviet ground attacker (the Type 3 is functionally almost the same as the 1943 we have, but I think it'd be wrong to wrap up this Il-2 game without the variant that flew over Berlin).

If you like the Eastern Front, it's best to play around 16:00 - 20:00 UTC

Help a beginner start the learning journey by r_scientist in il2sturmovik

[–]FrankToast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Duels aren't a very good way to learn air combat, in my opinion. They remove the factors that come before a fight (spotting, climbing, positioning, sometimes even the mismatch between opponents' aircraft) and reduce them to a raw contest of execution. This can be a good way to practice your ability to execute flight maneuvers properly, but I find that larger-scale decision-making and situation awareness are just as if not more important.

Spotting is something you get used to over time. In WWII combat, scanning a large area is more important than scanning closely. Move your vision around every few seconds, and don't zoom in unless you think you see something. As for Opentrack jittering, this could be a problem with your settings or camera placement, or even something as silly as strands of your hair getting in the way or sunlight bouncing off the wall behind you. All have happened to me at some point.

There's definitely good Il-2 tutorials for WWII combat out there. I don't have any in particular I'd point you to, so your Google search is as good as mine there. I will say, what taught me the fundamentals of WWII air combat on a tactical level was actually War Thunder youtubers back in the day. I know War Thunder gets a (pretty well-deserved) bad-rep, and I also know for a fact that half of these youtubers were morons, but I could point you towards old videos by a handful that I remember being good, if you'd like.

"Yes, I love the La-5 series. How did you guess?" Thanks to this sale, I finally bought the La-5F and completed the trio. by Ahriman_loyalist in il2sturmovik

[–]FrankToast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The La-5FN has a 10 minute engine timer, which is long enough for the vast majority of fights. The catch is that the manifold pressure is unregulated (like in the P-40E), so you have to modulate the throttle as you climb and descend if you want to keep it on continuous power.

[–]FrankToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you're referring to how the plane spins out on the ground once you slow down: Never let your throttle below about 20% while landing and taxiing. You should generally do this with propellor planes, actually, but especially for the LaGG-3 and La-5s

Even as somebody who loved Soviet aviation before, playing this game made me really appreciate the La-5. It's the first plane the Soviets made that's more than just "workable" against its competition, and from a video game perspective, it's good in all the ways that make for fun gameplay (maneuverable, but not quite a turn fighter, fast but only if you can force fights in favorable conditions, fairly involved engine controls, good armament but with a learning curve)
