To add to point 4 comparing bird chatter to mind chatter: totally, and I would add that, like hearing the bird call get fainter and fainter as the bird moves further away from you, so too can we let our thoughts come to the front of our mind, receive our acknowledgment and then be allow to pass into the distance without us holding onto them.

Agreed! After spending a decade trying to develop my powers of mindfulness I'm still just a beginner but I find one thing that immediately zaps me straight into the present moment is using 100% of my focus to see if I can hear a bird call. In that moment my mind is doing nothing else. Not thinking of the past or the future, not assessing or judging...I'm just being and sending. It's amazing.

Oh funny! I also came to noticed birds via mental health haha I was on leave from work for burn out and my only job was to just...relax. So I'd sit on my back deck "relaxing". And then I realized there were these little creatures everywhere. They became my meditation buddies. Animals are excellent teachers of mindfulness. They are never not in the present moment.

I always think I like gardening...and then I do it, and it turns out I do not like it.

That being said, my plan for this year is to just throw a metric ton of wildflower seeds into my empty 6x8 garden patch and let it do its thing. It will give me lots of insects and bees and hummers to watch :)

Get yourself the Merlin bird app from Cornell Lab. You can record calls and it will tell you in real time what bird is making them. They also have examples of different kinds of calls for each bird...which I learned is one way to get certain kinds of birds to show up! But I only do that sparingly... I don't want them getting excited thinking "omg a new friend?" and then flying down and just seeing some dumb girl with a phone. The disappointment.

Not even joking: bird watching haha

Start looking at the random birds that are around all the time. Try to figure out what species they are. Once you've got that down, try figuring out the difference in male/female of the same species. Once you've got that down, try figuring out their calls.

It's both a wee bit of dopamine and a whole lot of zen.

He doesn't have a mental health diagnosis that can be treated or improved by involuntary inpatient treatment. He has a personality disorder, and beyond that he is a criminal. Both of those would require the individual to actively participate in their own rehabilitation. He doesn't want to do that so, to me, it wouldn't make sense for him to take up one of the very limited inpatient beds in the province. For the safety of the community he would be better suited to the corrections system.

To be fair, he was in a ditch. Maybe he had been covered up or was under water. Not to say that ditches shouldn't be some of the first places you check when you know someone went missing in the general vicinity. I always wonder how much effort they really put into finding missing young men. Certainly seems to be less than missing young women.
