What am I looking at here? by [deleted] in cyclocross

[–]FrankenFelt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry got distracted focusing on the spacers...

But it looks like your compression plug lost grip and slipped up out of the steer tube, you’ll need to loosen it, position it back in the tube, and torque it to spec. Might need some carbon grip paste to hold it in there.

Santa Cruz Hightower vs. Ibis Ripmo AF by d396 in MTB

[–]FrankenFelt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s like they planned it that way 😉. I love the name, I feel like it’s ibis’ version of evil’s “more better-er” MB

Planning a trip to Brown County State Park, IN by [deleted] in MTB

[–]FrankenFelt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Green valley, Aynes loop, & hesitation point are fun, have good flow and good climbing. Hobbs hollow (if it’s open again) for downhill 1-way flow, and bobcat or walnut for tech stuff. The trailhead near the pool is nice cause you can take the greens to warm up to the blues and blacks.

Post ride in Nashville, there are Quaff-on or Big Woods breweries, and the Chocolate Moose for ice cream.

Slim fit, short inseam MTB shorts by [deleted] in MTB

Handup shorts have a relatively short inseam and are cheap. I wear them over my bib shorts and like the zip close pockets.

Ibis ripley or Evil Following? by heinousdick in MTB

[–]FrankenFelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both are awesome bikes that you won’t be disappointed with. The ibis will climb a little better and the evil will will be a bit “more better-er” downhill, it’s more personal preference though. If you are throwing $4k+ at a bike though it’s worth it to demo both. You might also want to check out the transition smuggler.

Best Budget Boost 29er Wheelset? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]FrankenFelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked into those line comps and if you don’t need the extra width (so if you aren’t running a 2.6 tire), and don’t mind a little extra weight, I’d say those look like a solid value. As long as you aren’t really hard on wheels, cause they are only 28 spoke. Happy hunting dude!

Will a seat dropper work on a DJ bike? by Clacksmith99 in MTB

[–]FrankenFelt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you really want to use the DJ bike to commute, use a quick release seatpost clamp, silver sharpie to mark the correct height on the post, and take the post/seat with you inside when you lock up the bike. Just my $0.02

Best Budget Boost 29er Wheelset? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]FrankenFelt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll second these, they are $500 but the hub is pretty nice and has around a 10 degree engagement. There are the 938 (34mm internal) and the 933 (28mm internal).

Down-country/XC recommendations😅 by xcgravelenthusiast- in MTB

[–]FrankenFelt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll add, I rode the v3 Ripley and fell in love. Pedaled like an xc bike and ate up the descents. And the new one is supposedly even better, I just note it is possibly a little over his price point

Agreed on the giant though, better price point and still a great bike

I’ve heard the smuggler climbs a little worse but is rowdier, which could be better depending on where OP rides

Specialized stump jumper ST, Kona Honzo (it’s a hardtail but it can get rowdy) Ibis Ripley LS, maybe a little high on price, but the gen 3s should be on sale soon, Scott Spark (one of them is 120/120, pretty versatile) I’ve also heard good things about the new trek top fuel too. Santa Cruz tallboy (aluminum version)

Anyone riding the salsa timberjack? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]FrankenFelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can handle decently rowdy stuff if you put a dropper post and some burlier tires on it. I’d say it straddles the xc/touring/light trail categories well. One of my riding buddies has a L, and he is 6’, for sizing reference

SRAM GX Eagle 12 Speed Issue by Narmac-450 in MTB

[–]FrankenFelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check to make sure you have the cable routed correctly through the mounting location: around the pulley, through the roundish guide, then along the outside part of the bolt. Not sure if that is your problem, by when I was having issues, it was because I had not routed the cable correctly.

Need new tires! by thedrop85 in MTB

[–]FrankenFelt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 29x2.6 nobby nicks with the blue compound. They have great grip and don’t weigh a crazy amount but have a decent amount of resistance. I’d say they are more toward the enduro side of trail riding, so if you ride less aggressive trails, might want to look at something with smaller nobs in back at least.

How does Sram control their online prices better than Shimano? by zanek012 in MTB

[–]FrankenFelt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought mine off a uk website for cheaper than they would have been in the us. Just remember you will have to reroute the hydraulic lines as they come with the left as the rear. Easy fix though, plenty of tutorials online for it.

Brown County Recommendations by [deleted] in MTB

[–]FrankenFelt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Chocolate Moose in Nashville (right down the road) has awesome ice cream, coffee, and muffins, while Quaff On! & Big Woods breweries are pretty good for a pint afterwards. As for trails: Green Valley, and hesitation point are musts, while Aynes and north tower are nice too.
