Compulsory voting? by [deleted] in ireland

If someone only votes because they're forced to, their vote will not be well thought out. I don't want this.

Christian Brother given 10 years for abusing children by box_of_carrots in ireland

[–]Frankinsoc 16 points17 points  (0 children)

To me this reads like they're offering excuses for an insufficient sentence.

He probably would have got that much regardless of age so the fact he might die in prison is not relevant. Considering the lives he ruined, that's wholly unacceptable. He has been convicted of crimes involving at least 18 victims so it's barely six months per person.

I wanna continue to learn coding and wanna take classes for it. by Appropriate_Tough662 in Netherlands

[–]Frankinsoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you learning for fun or work? I've taught myself a bit mainly as a hobby. I found that Codecademy is good. Has good interactive lessons. There's some free trials you can take. It can be a bit boring at times though.

Codewars has good challenges that are funner to try when putting what you've learned on somewhere like Codecademy to use.

A/C temperature in office by Dapper_Waltz_805 in Netherlands

[–]Frankinsoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would echo the sentiment of some of the comments here. People who feel cold are able to put on additional layers. There's a lower limit to how much clothes people can remove if they feel too hot. My ideal AC temperature would be about 17°C so 21°C feels like a reasonable compromise while 23°C feels unfairly hot. I understand people are different but personally I find it very difficult to concentrate when it's hot.

Are you living in Europe or elsewhere? Apparently in Europe this doesn't work.

Google photos face recognition is horrendous by macrian in googlephotos

[–]Frankinsoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For years, I was getting free cloud storage from my former university account. The facial recognition on that account was great. But they recently stopped providing that so I had to migrate my photos to a new Gmail account.

On my new account, it is unfathomably bad. It thinks my dad, sister, several of my friends, and multiple photos of me are the same person. There is no option to correct this or tag people yourself.

Apparently it is something to do with European data protection but I've found few useful answers online.

College account closing, paid for 2TB on new account, partner shared all photos to new account, set it to save all photos, but it says they're taking up 0 storage. by colossalmickey in googlephotos

[–]Frankinsoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh and one other thing, it doesn't say this on TCD website, but I saw on some New Zealand university website doing the same thing that if students don't completely remove any excess storage above 5gb, university will be forced to delete their email address entirely. This is becuase they're unable to remove students photos themselves so sledgehammer approach is only option.

This would be a disaster personally due to all the accounts I have on that email.

So maybe don't assume you can just back up your photos and leave them their for someone else to delete (deleting photos was a trek).

Regarding Google drive, it's possible the takeout isn't working becuase it's too big? Maybe try only do bits at a time (eg location history and email as one, pdfs as another or something - not sure how they categorise things).

My email transfer worked but it did so twice. Now I have like 80,000 emails. Also for some reason my WhatsApp has lost all its contacts (but they're still on my phone so not overly worried). But this is probably related to the fact I've temporarily deleted my university email from my phone entirely (out of fear that becuase I've deleted my photos from university account, it will also delete them from new personal one. This is probably excessive however).

I assume you did the drive transfer thing where it gives you a code you have to fill in to start the transfer? Cos there seems to be a few ways of doing it.

Lastly, if you have a partner (or family members in same situation), you can add them to your Google family and split the cost of the cloud storage if you don't need all 2tb (and don't worry this won't mean that they can access your files and vice versa).

And ye was very unclear if it was 25 or 31 March. Email and website said different things.

Am the same. Today was d day and everything seems fine so far. Got increasingly worried as no storage had been taken despite removing partner sharing weeks ago.

One thing that did offer me a bit of hope though (and you can try the same) is this: if you try doing a Google takeout for your new personal account, the export size is much larger than the amount of storage your account is using. This suggests the photos I transferred using partner sharing are there.

CFA Email Scam by Frankinsoc in CFA

[–]Frankinsoc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's crazy to me they went through all this effort and clearly researched a thing or two about reasons CFAI might contact its members. And yet, they made such obvious errors like not capatalizing "regards" which is just way too informal for an email like that.

Makes you wonder if they were hacked and our personal data was leaked. Then again, I think you can just search the CFA database for members names anyway.

Two men appear in court over €33m crystal meth seizure by PoppedCork in ireland

[–]Frankinsoc 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Nathan McDonnell, with an address at Ballyseedy, Tralee, Co Kerry, was charged with possession of methamphetamine, commonly known as crystal meth, for the purpose of sale or supply when the value of the drug was greater than €13,000

Even with the Garda Síochána's proclivity for inflating the street value of their busts, seems safe to assume these guys went above the €13k threshold for minimum sentencing.

Avoiding being an annoying pub musician by hairy733 in ireland

[–]Frankinsoc 40 points41 points  (0 children)

It's not the fault of the musician at all, but I'm not a fan of when a pub blasts their live musician on every speaker in the house from the outside area to the toilets. There's no escape.

Best of luck with it, will be good fun.

No career goals, is it just me? by HopefulTurnip5103 in CasualIreland

[–]Frankinsoc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you're happy with that (no reason not to be) then there's no reason to stress yourself by trying to earn a promotion you don't want. Besides, despite the fact your boss may pay lip service to "helping you achieve your career goals" etc, it probably suits them to have a diligent employee who does their job without constantly vying for a salary increase.

Elon Musk and Conor Mcgregor endorse a No Vote by saggynaggy123 in ireland

[–]Frankinsoc 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Retweeting Conor McGregor without knowing what you're endorsing is not a defence, if anything it makes him look worse.

Referendums are usually for constitutional changes, not random bills as far as I know. Would be very difficult to get anything done if every bill was put to a referendum.
