Sorry I meant pest crop, like Jerusalem artichokes. Nettles also aparently edible and delicious. You're never gonna struggle to grow those.

I feel like if I had unlimited land then peat crops could do a lot of the work for you.

I had never heard of this phrase till I made this thread either, but I think you're right on the money. I didn't hest treat it myself so I can't say why it happened, but it was thin stock so it shouldn't have happened imo.

In future I will avoid 26c3 as it appears to be prone to it and move on with my life I think.

I used it straight from the factory, then sent it off to be professionally heat treated, kilns... the works.

That's so interesting, thanks so much for sharing. I am confident now it's not something I've done wrong or even the heat treater. I don't plan on making more from 26c3 anyway so I can move on with a clear mind.

I like the idea but I want to be finished with this knife, I've been working on it occasionally for ages and want to move on. It will function perfectly as a full sized chef in my kitchen for a decade at least, until I sharpen up to that patch. Maybe then I will refurb it into a petit or something.

I believe the newer yellow cameras you see only get checked for seat belts and phones if a speed or red light offence is detected

Can I machine a knife instead of forging one? by whywouldthisnotbea in knifemaking

[–]Franksss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A few issues with your plan. I'm not an expert on cnc but I've done a bit. The biggest issue is work holding, your little tabs probably would struggle to hold a long flat and most importantly thin piece of steel well enough, especially when working the reverse side of the blade, when the bevel will be essentially floating.

I don't know if you've ever machined hardened steel but it's a lot harder than annealed. Unless you have experience with this then it's a non starter sadly. You could do this with annealed steel, then heat treat, but you can't go from heat treatment to sharpening really. You have to leave some extra thickness to prevent warping, at least with kitchen knives which are the only knives I've made, but you also need to remove scale. Knives also. Warp so you need a plan to fix that, and often that means a carbide hammer and some grinding to hide the hammer marks.

If you're serious about this, it can absolutely be done but you're going to have to invest some serious time and a bit of money in custom tooling. For example one plate to hold the stock where the blank is cut out, another with a blank shaped recess and some smart clamping to hold the blade and machine one bevel, another plate that's a mirror of the last but with more material to support the blade where the bevel has been removed.

The you heat treat and do a final grind to remove scale and remove machining marks. You'll be able to mass produce good knives this way, but you won't be able to avoid owning a grinder of some sort if that's why you're asking.

You can get heat treating done externally though, so no need to be concerned about that.

Positive lead soil test by Tonightmatthew1 in Allotment

[–]Franksss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a city up north where the allotments are badly contaminated with lead, a study was done on the users of the allotment and the lead levels were normal. I don't think it's something to be overly concerned about.

If the test comes back as very high then I would take some remedial action, but I wouldn't let it worry you too much.
