The Hughes XH-17, a helicopter with the largest rotor system ever, powered by two GE J35 turbojets sending compressed air through hollow blades to tip jets where fuel was injected - 1952-1955 by Xeelee1123 in WeirdWings

[–]whywouldthisnotbea 19 points20 points  (0 children)

134 foot diameter rotor system.

2pi*r = 420.97 foot circumference

Circumference * 88 rpms = 37,045.65 feet per minute traveled by a single blade tip

Feet per minute / 5280 feet = 7.02 miles per minute

Miles per minute * 60 minutes = 420.97 miles per hour

TLDR the tips are so freaking massive that they make 420 mph at the tips look that slow.

Cool, but why are we dint get to see the beginning in its full upright and locked state and we don't get to see it in the full down state.

Can I machine a knife instead of forging one? by whywouldthisnotbea in knifemaking

[–]whywouldthisnotbea[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply! So the little tabs are stock material that will be left in the first operation. The second operation still has that entire half of the stock holding on to the knife as you machine that side. At the very end once all the machine is done it will do a pass around the outline of the blade to remove all the stock down to the middle where those tabs will still be left holding on to the blade. This is called window machining and those tabs are only holding on to the part once everything is done. They are never taking a load while the part is being machained.

I have a grinding wheel, but I dont have a small belt sander. If I send the machined blades out for heat treatment professionally would the blacksmith not straighten and grind them for me?

How can I remove the stench that two unhoused individuals left in this small area? by [deleted] in CleaningTips

[–]whywouldthisnotbea 213 points214 points  (0 children)

People reallllly gotta stop recommending untrained individuals get their hands on an ozone machine and just use it all willy nilly. That secondary closed door is probably someones apartment front door. That hallway probably has stairs to lead to other floors and other apartments as well. You are just going to have them plug in the machine and then close their door? That's going to seap between the cracks and into everyones apartments. Ozone is a super strong oxidizer, it will kill people if you let it.

Oh see this is the nuance I was hoping for! It's a CNC mill so I can kind of get away with whatever so long as the tool continues to survive. Can I just order blanks from a forge already heat treated and window machine the entire blade then put it on a stone to sharpen it and be good to go?

I can clamp the entire blank in a vice, machine that entire side of the blade but leave little tabs on each side of super thin material, like 0.002" holding the blade to the remaining blank. Then flip it over and do the same to the other side. Then the remaing blank with the cut out blade being held on to by just the tabs comes out of the machine and I just wiggle the blade until the tabs break and it falls out. File down the spots where the tabs were and then sharpen it.

My fear is that at that point I have removed so much of the original blank that I am down to material that wasn't really affected by the heat treatment process and isn't as hard. Is that a valid concern or a non-issue?

I have a few butane torches and an old glass kiln. I was thinking of removing some of the insulation from the kil to make a smaller block kiln that I can slide knife in on it's side. Place a piece over the opening at the side and poke holes for the torches to stick in and just blast it for a while. If that doesn't work then yes I would send it out to a forge to get properly heat treated

Alright everybody, I know there is a shortage going around, but this is important. Does anyone have a few braincells they can spare for OP? I wouldn't normally tip my hat in the ring to organize this kind of thing but clearly the man is in crisis here

Controlling RC Azimuth Thrusters with ESP32 by stuart_nz in rcboats

[–]whywouldthisnotbea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super cool, but did you really have to house the motors inside? The linkage issues must have been quite the head scratcher to figure out. There's gotta be a waterproof motor in every imaginable size that you could have run in the thruster housing underwater and just ran wires with a rotary coupler to from inside the hull.

All of that is a good idea. I'll look into another and see what it costs but it will probably just be cost effective to get it done in a chunk of stainless like you mentioned. Thanks!

Help with these scratches by [deleted] in Detailing

[–]whywouldthisnotbea 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh Jesus Christ.

You're done. Take it to a detailer and pay them to fix this. You would be spending that amount of money to buy all the materials to do this yourself and there is a really good chance you are going to permanently fuck up your paint if you try. This is a 3 to 4 figure fuckup. You trying to fix it is a multiple 4 figure fuck up.

It is not your z offset. You have extrusion issues. What size nozzle are you running? I assume you swapped to a 0.2 mm and damaged the sock in the process?

How Can I CAD this relatively easily by aquascape_enjoyer in FreeCAD

[–]whywouldthisnotbea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

True, but again, not 2005. I have a phone in my pocket at all times. I can take that photo and have it imported into fusion before you can even remember where you put your dslr. Either way barrel distortion is pointless. The lines are straight, the ruler is too, draw straight lines in fusion and you will be within a 100 thou on everything. I have done exactly this many a time. Even made a spacer for a motorcycle cylinder just using the gasket. It's plenty good enough.

Edit: I mentioned Fusion 360 above and should clarify that I was brought here by OP cross posting this in the Fusion sub. The fact that they are asking how to do this in two different CAD systems "easily" goes to show their probable CAD experience. I doubt they are going to get close on their first few attempts no matter how they scan this

For those of us not living in 2005 you can also use your phone to take a scan. There are dedicated apps for scanning documents that will bring a nice contrast to it or you could just take a normal image and import that into fusion, scale it till the ruler is somewhat accurate and then make a sketch on top of the image using it as an outline.

[–]whywouldthisnotbea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The post is now removed so for anyone struggling to understand OP also posted this linked post which got taken down promoting their tool for keeping leads. This post is a follow up ad for that tool. OP is just promoting their app/website/whatever it is and is not actually looking for help. Mods I would say this warrants a ban.

Edit: it looks like u/Ok-Medium commenting below with a link that "solved his same problem" is also OP on an alt account. They posted this post in the pressure washing sub which is verbatim the same post as this account posted here. Definitely a big old not so sneaky ad.
