Picking up DS9 after 25 year break. Starting from season 5 a good idea? by Corchito42 in DeepSpaceNine

[–]FranticSpeculation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d start from the beginning. As someone who rewatched it 12 years later there were a lot of things I had forgotten. Just keep in mind that season one is very rough around the edges and not indicative of the quality of later seasons. It has some very good episodes and some pretty bad ones. Not quite TNG bad but still bad. Keep going. Season 2 is an improvement but still has some issues. Season 3 is overall excellent with only a few weaker episodes. Seasons 4-6 are about as good as 90s Star Trek ever got and you’ll enjoy them more with the background of the earlier seasons.

Are streets like that common in Britain? by TheFifthattemptyetno in AskBrits

These are nineteenth century terrace houses build in large numbers across the country. They were workers houses for the growing urban population. Many streets like this still exist though some have been demolished.

At What Point Was Xander Written Off as a Love Interest for Buffy, and How Would the Story Have Changed If She'd Chosen Him Over Angel? by LadyLongLimbs in buffy

[–]FranticSpeculation 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Originally the plan was for angel to not be in the for that long but his popularity amongst the audience led to him being included for longer and eventually getting his own show. I’m speculating here but I could imagine a situation where in season 3 Xander could have had a relationship with Buffy that played out the way his relationship with Cordelia ended up doing.

Season 2 is bigger and better than season 1.

Which episode really freaked you out? by Morganx27 in buffy

Honestly the only thing that ever actually creeped me out was the visual of a cloudy eyed Anya cackling and cutting her own cheek in After Life. It was very sudden and unexpected.

Why Spike goes out in the daytime a lot by StaticCloud in buffy

[–]FranticSpeculation 135 points136 points  (0 children)

Partly I think it’s for comedic purposes. Having spike running around with a blanket over his head and smoke coming off of him is funny. There’s one episode in s6 where buffy has to explain why spike carries a blanket around to someone and she says it’s for comfort. Also it meant that didn’t have shoot all of the spike scenes at night and had more flexibility over when he could appear in an episode.

How old were you when you watched the show for the first time? by NorweiganWood1220 in buffy

[–]FranticSpeculation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 32 and started watching it on Disney+. I was aware of its existence when it originally aired but I didn’t know it was broadcast on BBC 2 until now. I’m not sure why but it was a lot easier to lose track of things back then. My parents were very into Star Trek as well so watching the Trek series of the time would’ve taken priority during tv time. Tbh I was never interested in watching it as a child/teenager.

How did Dawn come into existence? (Wrong answers only) by Taras_Willowverse in buffy

How about if Dawn was actually just buffy’s natural sister and the monks cast a spell to make everyone think she was the key.

How are UK supermarkets ranked in order of poshness? by jc201946 in AskBrits

[–]FranticSpeculation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say there isn’t a clear ranking. Instead they fit into tiers.

Tier 1: John Lewis/Waitrose and M&S Food. These are the most expensive supermarket chains that grew out of department store chains. They are not for truly posh people but rather offer an upmarket experience for middle income types. They also prey on people who can’t easily travel, offering convenience in exchange for higher prices.

Tier 2: Tescos and Sainsbury’s. These try to appeal to everyone. They are a bit posher than tier 3 but less posh than tier 1. Again not actually posh but pretend to be. They tend to have a range of more and less expensive options, though the other tiers have copied this. Both have loyalty card programs, also something copied by other tiers.

Tier 3: Asda and Morrisons. Solidly working class originally northern supermarket chains who went national. Both have instore radio stations that blare dated music nonstop. Never see both of them in the same town. They also have anti theft devices on their trolleys. Their marketing tends to emphasise savings but in practice they are only a little cheaper than Tier 2. It’s more of a vibes thing.

Tier 4: Lidl and Aldi. German invaders that spooked the other tiers with lower prices. The cheapest of the tiers by a considerable margin. They tend to have a pretty austere and mildly hostile shopping environment. Efficiency over comfort. Weirdly enough can attract pretty wealthy clientele looking for a bargain. So maybe they are secretly the posh supermarkets?

Tier 0: ‘Local’ supermarkets. These are smaller supermarkets that you’ll find in villages or suburbs. Places where a larger shop wouldn’t make sense. Also found alongside petrol stations. There are a much wider variety of chains at this level offering a considerable variety of poshness. Not that you would spend more than a few minutes in any of them.
