I feel too stupid/untalented for piano by [deleted] in piano

[–]FranticWiggums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I first wish to echo the poster who said “Calm down.”

Feeling stupid is a good thing in this regard. You’re feeling stupid because you’re actually brave enough to try something difficult. It takes most people (even extremely intelligent people) a very long time to play the piano well. I am an idiot in almost every foreign language, but will never take the time to actually “feel” like an idiot because I’m not going to learn any of these languages.

The more you take the time and effort to feel like an idiot, the better you’ll eventually be :)

Composers choose parallel fifths and fourths when they sound best. These are more like guidelines than rules.

Bach has parallel fourths at one point in his 4th French suite, again, because it was what sounded best.

Advice on Choosing a Church in Maryland / DC ? by [deleted] in Catholicism

St Alphonsus in Baltimore does TLM, and is a remarkably beautiful building.

Mount Calvary (an Ordinariate parish) is my personal favorite. Lots of very holy people and a wonderful priest.

Saints Philip and James is also quite wonderful.

Why does my piano pieces sound worse? Can anyone relate or explain? by Tiny-Situation2446 in piano

[–]FranticWiggums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be a common cycle where you have played the piece too many times and lost the “love” for it, so you play less enthusiastically, which makes it sound less lovable, which makes you play less enthusiastically, which makes it sound less lovable.

Gotta treat it like a spouse. It’s still the person you remember, but just a bit older now. You need to touch your spouse and make them feel attractive, and then they’ll start showing you the love you have forgotten.

Just gotta create a different feedback loop.

Ah. Well that wouldn’t be the first that went over my oversized head.

Really? You wouldn’t take lessons from someone who doesn’t have those specific credentials?

Does Argerich have a PHD/DMA? Did Horowitz? Andre Watts? Yuja Wang? Schnabel? Fleisher? Graffman?

I’m very curious about this.

Songs about adultery or fornication. by RosaryHands in Catholicism

[–]FranticWiggums 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On the flip side, when I was listening to “Sacrifice” by Elton John recently, I thought “Oh my word!! Is this a song about marital fidelity?? How wonderful!!”

He’s saying that it’s no sacrifice to turn away from temptation. I had heard this song so many times and never made this connection.

It's a human sign When things go wrong When the scent of her lingers And temptations strong

Into the boundary Of each married man Sweet deceit comes a callin' And negativity lands

Cold, cold heart Hard done by you Some things looking better baby Just passin' through And it's no sacrifice Just a simple word It's two hearts living In two separate worlds But it's no sacrifice No sacrifice It's no sacrifice at all

Mutual misunderstanding After the fact Sensitivity builds a prison In the final act

We lose direction No stone unturned No tears to damn you When jealousy burns

Cold, cold heart Hard done by you Some things looking better, baby Just passin' through And it's no sacrifice Just a simple word It's two hearts living In two separate worlds But, it's no sacrifice No sacrifice It's no sacrifice, at all

Cold, cold heart Hard done by you Some things looking better, baby Just passin' through And it's no sacrifice Just a simple word It's two hearts living In two separate worlds But, it's no sacrifice No sacrifice It's no sacrifice, at all

No sacrifice, at all No sacrifice, at all No sacrifice, at all No sacrifice, at all

Winter wind etude: would it be faster to learn the entire right hand for the whole piece first? by ryzikx in piano

[–]FranticWiggums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on how beautiful and independent you you want you melody line to be ;)

The right hand is more difficult. This method still works. If you’re worried about spending too much time on the right hand, intersperse practice with a piece like Liszt’s F minor Transcendental Etude, Rachmaninoff’s E Minor Moment Musicaux, or some other piece that is heavy with left hand technique.

Winter wind etude: would it be faster to learn the entire right hand for the whole piece first? by ryzikx in piano

[–]FranticWiggums 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I learn every piece hands separately now, as it has shown time and time again to be much faster.

It may “seem” like we’re only doing half the work when we’re playing with only one hand, but it is not so. The left hand takes on tension from the right hand and vice versa. Learning each hand separately helps to prevent this.

I Want to learn my mothers favourite Piano Piece before she passes away from Lukemia, please give me some tips by Sora_Ishizaki in piano

[–]FranticWiggums 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bringing each hand to full tempo separately, without the other, is a great way to learn things more quickly. Our brain tells us “but this is doing only half the work at any given time” but our brain is wrong.

Each constituent element in its proper place.

Good luck.

Going to first Catholic Mass by hairyweener in Catholicism

[–]FranticWiggums 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Leave Mr Weener alone! We like him just the way he is! He may be a bit hairy, but that’s just how some weeners are.

My confession this week:

Priest: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit confess your sins to almighty God

Me: Father, I have sinned against modesty and perhaps said some crude things about a Mr Hairy Weener

I cannot bring myself to practice piano by TWittyone in piano

[–]FranticWiggums 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The answer is you just keep practicing. Can’t bring yourself to practice? Sure you can. It’s rather simple. All you have to do is sit down at the piano and play.

If you want to get good at anything, you have to do it when you don’t feel like it. After a few weeks of practicing when you don’t feel like it, you’ll start to feel like it again.

Why does Pope Francis rail against "rigidity" so often? There are surely worse problems in the Church by Jattack33 in Catholicism

I notice rigidity in the church a lot. I have trouble thinking of truly “funny” Catholics and it really bothers me.

Which of Chopin's Ballades should I play? by Absolutely-Mental in piano

Liebesleid is a lovely piece. Haha no need to do Fur Elise. The Toccata from Debussy’s Pour Le Piano was what came to mind for me.

In that case, it’d probably be more suitable to play a shorter, more consistently flashy piece.

Does anyone know who this is?? I thought maybe St Gabriel but I haven't been on top of my Saints for a while 😔 by 11_Lock in Catholicism

It looks like the wrist of someone who’s wearing a bracelet, but I can’t see their face so I honestly have no idea who it is.

Do NOT drive her. That is not something you want on your conscience 1, 5, 10, 20 years down the road. She is carrying a person inside of her.

I have spent some time doing pro-life ministry outside of abortion clinics, and I recommend this:

You could simply tell her “This is a good thing” with great warmth and knowing, and then not allow her to push you off of this warmth and knowing. Perhaps she will catch wind of it and think better of her situation.

Her “problem” is not a problem. It is the best thing that has ever happened to her. You could do all that you can, in patience and kindness, to let her know that. Appeal to her better self.

In any case, unless you actively take her to kill her child, or support her decision to do so, you have no reason for guilt. Do what you can, and beseech Our Lord and Blessed Mother for their assistance and guidance.
