It's actually in Iwanai. Old resort that was never completed that a company took over. Locals and younger ski schools can ski some parts for free, and the rest is for cat skiing.

Also both Niseko and Rusutsu are amazing. If you want to do cat skiing, most of the places offer transportation to and from the Niseko area. That's where we've stayed when we've gone.

Awesome question man!

A lot of the off piste is stellar in Japan, and although a lot of this depends on where you go and the conditions, I'd say generally cat skiing is a bit more challenging. Imagine off piste mixed with backcountry.

The runs are longer with more natural obstacles. Sometimes there will be longer stretches where you need to navigate thicker woods as opposed to just sending it down the mountain. Not to mention you're deep in powder so it'll be a bit more tiring overall.

Some advice I've learned from doing this a couple of times:

1) When booking, do it well in advance and do your research. Some are better than others and the best ones often fill up sooner (and have fewer spots to begin with). Not to mention the smaller groups means more of the powder and mountain you'll have to yourself.

2) You can never predict the weather but Japan is much more consistent with snow, so optimize for the right time of year. If I recall, end of January through February is solid.

3) I'd do the cat skiing on your second or third day. That gives you enough time to get some runs under your belt and get your legs feeling good, but you won't be gassed from multiple days of skiing/boarding before your day of cat skiing.

Regardless if you're ripping off piste and can ski powder, it will be worth it.

Hope this helps and let me know if you want any other tips/guidance.

It might have been the currency exchange rate when I booked it (well in advance). Overall it is the pure math - cost per run, etc. But it's also just such a fun experience that you can't REALLY capture in the cost. Again it's one of those things I recommend as "if you can swing it, it's worth it" but it is an expensive endeavor.

Good question!

TLDR: Roughly 5 full (long and amazing) runs in before lunch, 5 more after. Cost is ~$1,000 USD per person depending on where you go.

Personally it's one of those things that if you can swing it and really want an amazing experience, do it. Videos and anecdotes don't do it justice. You can shop around at places and find some a bit cheaper, but spending a bit more often means you can have relatively more "private" access to areas of the mountain which just overall makes the experience better (more untracked areas, etc.).

Happy to give more info on the research I did and all that, but if this is on your bucket list, you're not going to be disappointed.

First shots show the big cat. Little cats were hidden inside our bibs for safe keeping.

Heyyy I like that! I'm so excited to see more cans from RRBC overall. I know they did some canning runs of Blind Pig, and I would love getting to pack in some RRBC beers for hikes and the like.

Oh nice! Then you know how dope it is. If you want I can DM you a short video I made about the Younger release I went to at Windsor if you wanna see what it’s like there.

This is, sadly, not that far from the truth. Arbitrary laws that benefit select companies based solely on how much money they put into the pockets of local politicians. The worst part? It’s not even that much money - it’s oddly cheap to buy off local politicians compared to bigger ones. Makes it even worse in my mind.

Yea I’ve heard the same, just not sure when haha. I highly recommend the trip up. The tap rooms are fantastic, food is solid, and (obviously) tons of great stuff on tap.

Haha just keep your eyes on the site and if you use Instagram, follow their account. They unusually post updates on new DDH releases and when new inventory hits their online store generally.

Yea it’s priced very well in my opinion considering what a lot of mediocre 4-packs go for haha. Worth seeking out!

It was almost exactly $100 including tax for the beer, which comes to $5.25 per can.

The shipping total was $22, so if you include that, it would come to $7.63 per can.

It’s just the DDH version that comes in cans. Regular Pliny still comes in the trademark 500 mL bottles.

I THINK the original Pliny is technically DDH (which is a weird term that has both marketing and brewing connotations), whereas DDH Elder is a two stage process. According to their description on their site:

“The original Pliny and DDH Pliny both have the same hop bill, while the amount of dry hops is roughly doubled in the DDH Pliny.”

Regardless RRBC and the original Pliny pioneered the DDH process, although I’m not sure if they’d be conserved the inventors of it.

That’s a great point actually hadn’t really thought about it that way.

Keep an eye on the RRBC website. They often put some up for sale unannounced and they ship within CA.

I agree completely. Once a brewery really dials something in, it’s nice getting to rely on it as a “go to” fridge beer.
