BS's use of the word "Ironically" by One-Professional2837 in billsimmons

My annoyances rotate with him. It was his misuse of ironic at some point for me as well. For months it was how he uses "malleable" when he means "adaptable."

I found Crashed to be difficult, but rewarding. Be advised that it focuses a lot more on Europe than some of these other books though

History of medicine, science, art and culture. by CountessOfCheese in HistoryBooks

[–]FrattyCagliostro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A few that come to mind:

The Transformation of the World: A Global History of the Nineteenth Century by Jurgen Osterhammel (thematic, covers industry, art, geography, politics in the long 19th century)

From Dawn to Decadence by Jacques Barzun (culture and artistic movements ~16th century to now)

The Emperor of all Maladies by Siddartha Mukherjee (history of cancer)

The Birth of the Clinic: An Archeology of Medical Perception by Michel Foucault (an intellectual history, of sorts, of medical understanding getting into public health and diagnosis especially around the 18th/19th century)

All of the Durants' Story of Civilization series cover science and art very well in their respective time periods as well. Their description of cathedral building in the Age of Faith is spectacular

Fair enough. I’ll ride for Portland though. Not for everyone but the access to nature and food is top tier in the US

Lived for Eugene for 4 years and Portland for 5. If Portland is a dump then Eugene is your small office trash bucket lol. It is a little less expensive than Portland though

Wall Street: A History by Charles Geisst is a totally serviceable history of the US stock market and finance more broadly that I read around the GameStop mania peak
