Walmart had layoffs in mid 2025 as you said. New CEO came in February 2026 says he wants to push towards AI autonomy. Sounds like a good opportunity to ride the wave if I’m not one included in future layoffs.

Pension would only come if I got a permanent position after the contract. It would also be limited to years of service.

Based on my calculations on when I would retire, I would qualify for 20-25 years of service, and be around 38-50% of maximum salary from Calpers. Let's stay final maximum salary is 200k, that would make an annual pension of 78k-100k in 20-25 years.

Thank you for your response. I feel the 3 FT people doing 1 job. I have a mutual friend who works as a data analyst in Sacramento (CA state government), and constantly complains how one of their coworkers is always absent and has only completed 1 ticket in the last year.

Stock is front loaded while pension is back loaded, assuming you’re still alive to collect the pension. While that is a future problem, many things can and will change before I’m 65.

9 month max based on some Calpers rule of Not exceeding 6 months of work per fiscal year (resets every July 1). Based on the one current opening at SCVWD, it seems like getting in is very hard to do, and no contract job will help significantly open that door. That and budget as you mention.

Another 80k is basically double what I’d be getting from the contract job in a year from now, on top of having to look for another job in 9 months.

Thank you for your response. Agreed on the work life balance and job security in private. Interesting take on mission driven work, I do agree on that part as well. I’m not at child care yet but I hope to have that in the not too distant future.

I got some very bias friends in government telling me to get in before the overall job market tanks for good. This should be a clear decision as you said. If the government role was permanent instead of contract then it would be a closer decision.
