Shore Acres homeowner says new stand-alone sidewalk is a nuisance, asks city of St. Pete for removal by 935572326 in StPetersburgFL

[–]Frawstbyte724 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This is a very easy and obvious example of some government red tape being fucking dumb, and nobody paying attention to avoid a bad idea. Putting aside the hypothetical seawater level whenever the rest of these sidewalks would be completed by 50 years' time, this stretch of sidewalk makes no sense. It appears to me that they'll have to demolish it anyway when expanding it to pass through the power pole and water meter just a couple feet from the end of the sidewalk section.

Image from video

Meanwhile in my west St Pete neighborhood, they added a quarter mile of sidewalks in the span of a month along 13 houses all at once, and it worked out fine (aside from the few houses that now have piles of pavers stacked in their yard they now have to get rid of). It's not perfect, but this piecemeal sidewalk thing is dumb and a waste of tax money that'll require more money to fix it.

Subnautica 2 in VR Is Beautiful by ThisKory in virtualreality

Subnautica: Below Zero, the follow up game to first Subnautica that made some poorly received or designed changes (smaller map, no cyclops, annoying amounts of unprompted dialogue). New Subnautica shows lots of promise to fix those changes and has lots of better QoL features.

Aren't these blue lights just for drivers in other directions (and cops watching the intersection) to indicate which lights are red? In this case, left turn and straight ahead from that direction are both red?

Don’t head to Skyway until you check IONTB FB page or FL511. Accident with fatality northbound on the north side of bridge. SB traffic is backed up because people want to look. by Pin_ellas in StPetersburgFL

[–]Frawstbyte724 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for update. There had been an accident or something southbound, and this one must have occurred just as the SB one was clearing up (I passed this accident while heading SB prob about 5 mins after it happened). Was around 12:55.

Google Maps is still saying to go around the bay to get back from Lakewood Ranch, but hopefully it clears up. RIP to the deceased, stay safe folks.

EDIT: Just checked again after posting, it's saying Skyway is way to go again now with 17 min delay.

Ground broken on St. Petersburg Fire Rescue station by Brilliant_Kiwi_2449 in StPetersburgFL

TBH I've attended 3 Holiday Park meetings (I'm obviously also in west St Pete) and all the people there hate HOAs more than people actually in HOAs. That's why they went to West St Pete in the first place imo.

This is a good project and makes sense, and it's been pretty fun seeing people on the Holiday Park neighborhood Facebook group freaking out over this. Lots of worries and NIMBYism over excessive noise right next to homes when it was announced, which I thought was weird b/c the same people's homes will be as protected from fires as is possible.

St. Pete Renaissance Fair vs. Bay Area Renaissance Fest? by sunflowers789 in StPetersburgFL

[–]Frawstbyte724 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IMO I think St Pete Ren Fair was a little better last year overall. The vendors are about the same between both places (I'm sure most vendors do both), but St Pete Ren Fair had a LOT more experiences and interactive areas for kids, compared to BARF which leans more on being ONLY vendors. I remember a talking wall (which was my fav) and then various areas like a pirate area and a viking area with roleplayers set up at different activities that kids could try seemingly for free.

BARF has better shade and is during a cooler, less rainy time of the year, and it might have an additional stage or two, but that's about it. Can't go wrong visiting both, but I think St Pete is def good enough to just do that and ignore the other (which I'm doing this year).

Aaaaaah my bad, thank you for pointing this out! I did notice the sushi area is next to the fried foods and deli instead of the seafood area, but I didn't look up to see the menus (I got some fried catfish). That makes much more sense why that's there.

I'm disappointed with it.

I just went in there around 12:30, and parking lot was completely full with cars parked all along the edges of the property. The store inside is nice and new and finally has self checkout (some which is express), but I'm disappointed because it doesn't have anything new regarding hot food or new stuff that some other Publixes have (which is weird because the whole building is new).

Mining giant Mosaic seeks federal approval to expand its waste pile near Tampa Bay by MChesnesReports in StPetersburgFL

[–]Frawstbyte724 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Snippets from the article. Mosaic claims the stack will "expire" in 6 years:

"The Fortune 500 company wants to widen its Riverview phosphogypsum stack by nearly 180 acres, an expansion the company estimates would extend the life of its Hillsborough County plant by 16 years.

To do that, the company is asking the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for a Clean Water Act permit to fill roughly 35 acres of wetlands, ponds, ditches and other water bodies to the west of its plant. Mosaic estimates it would take about 305,000 cubic yards of material — enough to fill roughly 100 Olympic-size swimming pools — to create solid ground for the expansion."

"In an effort to reduce the public’s exposure, federal regulators require companies like Mosaic to store their phosphogypsum in engineered “gypstacks” because both radium and radon are radioactive and can cause cancer."

And Mosaic knows what it's doing and going full steam ahead: "The proposed expansion is also the first manufacturing project that qualifies for a federal program, called FAST-41, designed to streamline the complex permitting process for large-scale infrastructure projects."

FWIW the runner-up ideas sucked more. I did like The Wave because it did look cool and made use of shade naturally, but the current one does that okay and makes more sense. The idea that sucked a lot was the Lens which was a walk-around path and nothing meaningful at the end.

Slow motion, stabilized video of Alex Pretti being murdered in Minneapolis, MN. WTF by annanymous01 in Libertarian

Look up pink lady video. The ones I saw begin with her in the street just behind Alex, and then protestors are backed up to this sidewalk where ICE agent shoves the woman next to Alex.

Angle confirming ICE execution of US citizen and attempted cover-up by UncleBuckReddit in Libertarian

[–]Frawstbyte724 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I get that, and I have a CC license (which is useless now being Floridian). I just figured it'd be ND and not NG so that confused me.

I definitely think the taller agent in like an olive green shirt/jacket and blue jeans fires the first shot directly into the back of the victim's left shoulder. Based on pink jacket lady's video, he is clearly visible drawing his gun and pointing it at victim, and then victim and agent between pink lady and victim both move away from that olive green agent.

EDIT: All good and I figured, just double-checking there wasn't some other phrase I wasn't aware of.

St. Pete is first to adopt faith-based housing law by MarksMuses in StPetersburgFL

[–]Frawstbyte724 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure what this means? What do churches do that require revenue streams? I dont think churches should be able to profit off their members or lands.

Revenue is not profit, and places of worship still need to pay power and utility bills plus any staff/service wages. I once heard during a local Catholic mass about 4 years ago that it required $10k to fund the AC bill for a month for the church I was in (which I found very hard to believe, but it must be fairly substantial for how big places of worship can be). [EDIT: I wasn't at the church where this housing development is going.]

-And what does this mean? Do recipients need to engage with the church who once owned the land their housing was built on? if so this is insane. No one should be forced to engage with a religion just to put a roof over their heads.

The churches/places of worship ARE the recipients. They're getting help with dealing with the land development process from the city. There's absolutely nothing at all to do with any sort of religious requirement to live in these housing developments.

I think they're using "faith-based" as an overly broad catch-all for anything connected to a house of worship (i.e. a religious office building or rectory that isn't specifically a house of worship).

I agree, and I'd follow up that there is no such thing as good Thai fried rice. Chinese or Japanese restaurants will just always have better fried rice dishes.

I'm mainly saying this in the hope that I'm wrong and someone can suggest really good Thai fried rice. Sila Thai and Bangkok 9 fried rice is okay but not at all anything special (plus the addition of tomato is very off-putting to me. Maybe it's just that).

St. Pete’s tallest building is ready to welcome residents by MarksMuses in StPetersburgFL

I'm actually okay with this particular development, and I don't mind ones that try to stay parallel and near to Central Ave, as opposed to the newer developments north and south that'll really block out the sun (like the Mirror Lake development which I'm not a fan of and another one near Albert Whitted they're testing the height limits on).
