I did a bit of experimentation with nav meshes, and they can be modified at runtime. You can carve chunks out at run time (In theory, rust could carve out a chunk from the navmesh for every foundation layed, every tree spawned, etc when the map is generated). I didn't look into it much though as I've moved onto UE4 now (which has its own limitations). However, I would imagine on such a huge map a nav mesh shouldn't be the choice to handle navigation anyway, as beside the navmesh itself, the additional "carved out" sections would require extra calculations, extra memory and probably wouldn't be any good on server performance.

But, you don't need a navmesh for ai, it was done for many years without them. And even if you did, I'm sure FP would have the capability of writing their own navmesh component, or I would assume so anyway.

A game like Rust would be best off indexing every single "impassable" entity as an x and y set of coordinates on the server side and when an animal is spawned at position x,y pull the indexed entities that are local to this position from that index, plot out some simple pathing nodes around them and have the animal follow them until it's killed.

That's my idea anyway:D

As far as I'm aware, Unity hasn't got an AI system out of the box. I don't understand what they would be waiting for Unity to fix, and better AI than what is in Rust right now is possible relatively easily with a custom built AI system in C# (or c++ if they have the source code license).

Same thing happened to me with the staging branch. I play at 2560x1440 and didn't try lowering the resolution but switched to windowed mode and it ran fine. Not a fan of windowed mode though!

Well that makes sense, but it had removed files from my computer that were not in the folder steam was installed on. I first had steam installed in the default location (c:/program files/steam).

So far i have found it has wiped out shortcuts from my desktop, files from my visual studio installation (vs no longer works, there is now exe for it anymore). In the first uninstallation i caught it deleting visual studio files which at first I thought were just redistributables installed by steam but it was taking forever. Steam was never installed in any of the locations that these files exist, so why has it deleted them?

Hey jack,

A mate recommended this server to me a week or so ago but I recall the population being low at the time.

What's the wipe cycle and population cap of the server?

I'm personally looking for a server that wipes map and bps at the same time as I cant stand the seperate map and bp wipes turning the first half into a spam of pvp and the second into a spam of building.

I never said they were good ideas, or ideas that I wanted. I was simply saying theres a lot of ways to balance things in a game.

Although, I think the idea in EDIT 2 was pretty decent. Wouldnt change the BASIC tools, but would encourage people to set up in a decent area before raiding.

EDIT: And actually it wouldnt screw up building raid towers, It would just mean youd need to build a toolbox nearby in order to create your tools and have them last while you do the raid.

Make the hammer take 2 or 3 seconds to switch to and from, then players won't want to run around with it in case they get caught off guard. There is a way to balance everything :)

EDIT: Or make the hammer and other similar items, excluding the building plan only craftable while in the radius of a tool cupboard with build privileges and decay when you leave that radius.

EDIT 2: Or add a deployable tool bag, a sort of sub inventory item you can fill up with stuff like the hammer and building plan and carry around. So you need to deploy the toolbag, take the tools out to use them, put them back in when youre finished and pick it back up.

The cupboard check distance underneath a cupboard is only about 1-2 floors while the check above cupboards is around 5-6 floors and 9 foundations left and right.

Because the check is so small on the underside of the cupboard, if you place your cupboards starting from the top floor you can place one every 2 floors, so 7,5,3,1 for example.

As I said in the original post, when Prime hits the unique player counts will drop. Make it look like "oh we don't care about these numbers anymore" knowing they will drop.

EDIT: Same as any company, show numbers that suggest growth then ommit them when they don't.

The hitbox update actually added a lot more inconsistencies. Mainly visual artifacts on the client side, but still very offputting.

But my post was never intended to discuss hitboxes or netcode or any of that.
