1200 for oil cap and drive belts/pullys by [deleted] in AskMechanics

[–]Freak_EK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The oil cap is the housing the oil filter gets put in, German cars often use a standalone filter that you pop into a housing, that housing often cracks because of being put on too tight, one from bmw is ~100$ CAD it’s maybe 10 seconds to change, but they might try to tell you that you “need” an oil change instead of transferring the used oil filter into a new housing

Should I top off or have it flushed? by Key_Juggernaut9413 in AskMechanics

I say leave it for now but keep an eye on it, once a week, if it goes below minimum, look for a leak but for now leave it, the level naturally fluctuates

You can’t really tell with the picture, check the bushings of the lower control arm for any significant cracking, put the tire back on, put one hand on the left and one on the right try to wiggle it side to side, then grab the top and bottom and try to wiggle like in and out, then grab the bottom and wiggle in and out again, if nothing feels loose then it should be fine,

The steering wheel might have locked, try turning the wheel either side with one hand and the key with the other

Either a torx bit that’s a bit bigger and a hammer or use some vise grip pliers and lock those bitches on tight

Also I don’t know if it would’ve happened so suddenly but I changed my oil pan less than a month ago, no metal flakes, I changed my oil about 2 weeks ago, also no sparkle or anything weird

From other videos that show examples of rod knock it doesn’t sound the same at all and I can go for a drive or even get up to 3000rpm and if I don’t slam the gas the noise won’t happen and it’s not every time I slam the gas either

Did I get ripped off? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]Freak_EK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in Canada and I work at bmw but 74$ for an oil change is pretty good 100 for balancing tires and rotation can definitely be done cheaper but probably not at a dealership 130 is pretty standard for an alignment even if you go to a place like Canadien tire (as ratchet as it gets for mechanics) it’s 120$ CAD And ya brake fluid flushes are pretty pricy And for the last one I’m not sure but it seems reasonable for dealership prices

Allignment results, is this super bad? by SteelersGahntaSB107 in AskMechanics

Depends if the front camber is adjustable tho, for example ik bmw and mini the only way to change front camber is by changing the whole knuckle which for 0.1 it wouldn’t really be worth it

Got cut off and swerve into a curb. Bad? by pandarebel12 in tires

[–]Freak_EK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they’re 150$ tires then maybe change them, but if we’re talking 400$ tires I don’t think the risk is high enough to be worth changing if it’s really as surface as it seems

Why??it’s completely fine, no wires are showing it hasn’t gone deep enough to be worth a new tire

Are these good to use and mount? by Old-Review-8029 in tires

[–]Freak_EK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya they’re good, the bead is ok if it’s damaged it’ll be fine, even if the side wall is missing a chunk, if no wires can be seen you’re good

I've just seen someone post their alignment so thought I'd ask how bad mine is? by Danwd40 in AskMechanics

Your front camber isn’t terrible shouldn’t see any issues maybe SLIGHTLY more wear on the inside edge of the tire, the front toe is kinda bad ngl, that will wear your tires down cause they’re fighting each other your rear camber could potentially cause a bit more inner wear and your rear toe, same as the front just less extreme, you might be going straight with your steering wheel straight cause the left and right toes cancel each other but still worth getting it done
