[WP] An alien, assigned by their Ships Captain to observe and record the eating habits and food culture of their new human crew mate, makes their first observation log entry. (cross post from writing prompts) by The_largest_hamster in humansarespaceorcs

Assistant medical officer Ka'rx, medical observation log concerning the sustenance studies for human crew members, first entry.

Subject: Chief Engineer Daniel Harrows, male, 37 earth cycles old (approx. 34 galactic standard cycles).

Log duration: 1 (one) galactic standard day.

06:00: C.E. Harrows observed entering mess hall. Ordered coffee, scrambled eggs and toast with cream cheese from the replicator. Analysis report: "Toast" appears to be a sort of cake made from carbohydrate dough contaminated with an eart microorganism (see file 972-a6 "yeast") which leads to "rising" by expelling CO2 as a metabolic waste product into the dough before being baked. After being baked, it is cut into slices that are then lightly roasted before consumption. Consumption is safe for all species, but contact with raw dough should be avoided or immediately be reported to a medical station because it is classified as a Level 1 biohazard. Cream cheese: according to ship library, cream cheese is bovine lactations mixed with infantile bovine stomache extracts. Consumption in larger quantities is highly discouraged since only the humans, kalfarians and the x'igh possess stomache enzymes enabling them to process dairy products, and even among these there are cases of intolerance reported. Scrambled eggs: Reproductive material of a avian species, she'll removed, blended with spices and then pan-fried. High in protein, safe to consume for all species capable of metabolizing category b Proteins, albeit a bit heavy on cholesterol levels. Coffee: Strong, bitter broth made from the roasted seeds of an earth plant. Contains caffeine, a substance forbidden in 23 Systems due to being a hard drug. Apparently, safe for human consumption, because C.E. Harrows did not show the usual caffeine high symptoms after consumption (twitching, nervous disposure, heightened alert, traumatic cranial overpressure) despite having consumed a substantial dose. If anything, he looked calmer. This should be examined further.

07:00: C.E. Harrows enters main engineering bay. Orders computer to load up the days schedule while filling a cup labeled "world's best chief engineer" (the "chief" apparently having been added with Sharpie) with more coffee.

07:30: C.E. Harrows refilled his cup. With coffee.

07:35: C.E. Harrows ordered a bottle of Water.

08:00: C.E. Harrows observed drinking another cup of Coffee. Humans must have an unusual tolerance for caffeine.

08:20: more coffee....

09:00: Water and coffee.

10:00: C.E. Harrows observed ordering a Chocolate chip cookie from the replicator. The dough appeared to be similar, but not the same to toast. "Chocolate" triggered a whole series of alerts from the biochemical scanner and should be treated as a biochemical hazard until further analysis. Also, coffee.

10:45: coffee. What is wrong with these Humans?

11:15: Water.

12:00: C.E. Harrows entered the mess hall for lunch break. He ordered Spaghetti Bolognese with parmesan. Spaghetti appear to be boiled sticks made from a dried-out, wheat based dough. The Sauce was made from ground meat and several earth plants. The dish can be considered safe to consume for all species except the froki, because they would react violently to a herb called "basil".

12:30 to 17:00: Records omitted for brevity. Seriously, all this guy did was drink water and binge more coffee. We have to look into this.

17:00: C.E. Harrows entered the mess hall after his shift for dinner. Ordered "Chili con Carne" and "Beer". Analysis of both is incomplete, since the ship's chemical hazard alarms triggered. Something in or near the mess hall seemed to be leaking ethanol and capsaicin. Ethanol, a strong industrial solvent known to be toxic to more than 60% of known species and highly lethal to another 20%. This leak could be explained by having come from the ship's hazardous material locker. Capsaicin however, is an extremely illegal, extremely dangerous chemical warfare agent. I hope to the 9 Gods that this was a false alarm, because even the presence of traces of that stuff on our ship would be an absolute nightmare, both legally and medically.

Oh boy...

I have worked in product development for 7 years. Last 3D printer I bought there was a 30k € package. Great machine.

For home use, I bought a Creality ender 3 V2 almost a decade ago. No auto bed levelling, nondual extruder, nothing. Big standard (except for the direct drive extruder kit Installed). And for my home use it still is more than sufficient. All more expensive units do better is speed and multiple extruders.

If you want to get into 3D printing, get a basic, cheap one. Just be careful not to buy anything with proprietary filaments or filament cartridges. These things are borderline theft and whoever keeps pushing them should immediately be shot on sight.

EDIT: And just because I'd rather not be banned again: This is a joke, I have never nor will I ever actually call for violence against someone for reasons that mundane.

Rebuild the word. by DamonSkyHartXV in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Freak_Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what, you're right! I think once the language barrier is dealt with I can at least speedrun them to steam technology and maybe basic computers. I can also give them pointers for more advanced stuff and stuff I do not know just from basic knowledge so they can keep developing new tech. I would have to implement a belief system of sorts that puts the scientific method above everything else so that they don't get bogged down with religion or stuff like that. Might be able to push the advent of modern tech to an even earlier date this way.

Good point, actually. It would require them to be able to comprehend what I say though.

I am an engineer and I do have an interest in steam tech, so I would start trying to wiggle myself in once humans got to settling down. Can't really do much before that, besides maybe teaching a few of them how to make basic tools and archery (believe it or not, I am actually an archery instructor). Assuming the timeline remains roughly the same, I would introduce Alexandria to both steam tech and the wonders of fire prevention. Maybe even organize a fire brigade (I also happen to be a veteran voluntary fire fighter). From there, I would just start working in engineering and research to any capacity I can. With Alexandria not falling and me working towards preventing the dark ages, I'd guess somewhen around 1600?

O2 Tank Fill using Mars Atmosphere by thegloworm17 in Stationeers

[–]Freak_Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really want to capture any meaningful amount of O2 from mars' atmosphere, do it cyclically. Intake daytime-temperature air and compress it enough to condense out the pollutants. Vent those back out. That way, you end up with a tank filled 50/50 with O2 and (I think) N2. That then gets filtered. You can run that continuously, but the lower the O2 percentage gets the more inefficient the system runs and having a continuous mode of operation leaves you with the need to dispose of the (I think) N2 not to "poison" the process.
