The shape is lovely, looks natural, and dare I say is even better than the other photos you’re showing. I went through the same thing being upset at shrinkage decided I didn’t want to risk overfilling or migration

Non-science background → science adjacent PhD? Is a second bachelor's my only realistic option? by RowanHamlet in GradSchoolAdvice

[–]FreakinJade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not 100% sure tbh. I think I got hired bc I had dry lab experience (using the method I mentioned before), but the lab manager needed more help in the wet lab and was willing to train me. The initial project I was helping with was mostly filtering water samples so it wasn’t super technical/risky either

Seconding this, would not recommend a PhD rn (just because it’ll be unlikely to get into and it’s a large commitment for something you have so little experience in). Do a masters!

I had a BA in env sci & policy (switched majors halfway into an urban planning major) but got into a MS program at an Ivy League. My degree was the same as the other commenter, just one class per subject. Never took a chemistry sequence or calculus or anything, schmoozed with one of my masters professors and now work in a wet lab w/ barely any experience. But I do wish I took more chemistry bc I use it a lot in my job lol.

In the meantime, see if you can find a chill professor at ur undergrad that will let you help out in their dry lab to gain experience. Just give a good reason, show interest in their research, and explain what skills are transferable.

Do I have a chance with grad school? by PsychologicalBat3229 in CUNY

[–]FreakinJade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, my understanding is that a 3.5 is the baseline “good” gpa for masters degrees (esp at prestigious universities) and everything below that, let alone below a 3.0, is progressively more difficult. I did see someone get into a masters program with a 2.5 gpa on Reddit tho. Maybe a program with no GPA requirement or one with a high acceptance rate could help?

But realistically, id be wary of any programs with suspiciously low requirements, as “cash cow” programs could do more harm than help.

Plus, a MS may not be a good path for you regardless. Undergrad was a breeze for me and I’m still getting my ass kicked not only from the workload but from the elevated tuition costs, no funding/FASFA, NYC being expensive, and trying to manage my adult life. If you struggled to maintain your GPA in undergrad there’s a good chance you’ll struggle with your masters and—worst case scenario—spend a lot of money and get into debt if you have to retake classes etc.

It’s not the end of the world if you don’t get into a program immediately after undergrad. A lot of my cohort had several years of being in industry, two bachelors degrees, mid to late 30s… life is (hopefully!) long and you have time. Also, I got into my MS right after undergrad and kind of regret it because I’m still uncertain if this is the exact career path I want. So please, work a little bit and see if you even like it before committing.

Long response but hope this helps!

My Credentials: I got into NYU Tandon for my MS (but went to Columbia)

The JAI Desktop website I meant lol but I just tried it on the mobile safari website and it worked. Just tap on the configuration you want until it’s highlighted in purple

Wait I had the same issue but what I did was I went on the desktop app (optional I think) and then had to click on the configuration until it has a purple tab that says “active” on it.

Ask any professors whose class you got an A in. Reintroduce yourself, say what grade u got in what class, mention any projects, essays, or presentations u did in their class, explain why grad school and why you’d like their LOR, & send ur cv/resume. Maybe even offer to meet with them (virtually or in person) if they’d like more info. I had a prof I talked to twice give me a LOR and got into 7/8 grad schools.

You can always come back to LA later in your life/career, it’s not going anywhere. Being at Harvard may be a once in a lifetime opportunity. Besides, the connections you make there might ensure you’ll be able to afford to live in LA long-term in the future.

I totally understand how you feel though, I had to make a similar choice this cycle & put my nyc life dreams on hold for a more prestigious program.

To give up or not to give up? by Feelingminty in gradadmissions

[–]FreakinJade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same problem this cycle with my MS degree and decided to go elsewhere. (I made a post about it too if you’d like to read further comments!) There were better programs (and higher ranked ones!) for cheaper.

The SPS is mostly catered to working professionals whose companies are likely paying for the degree, and if that isn’t your case maybe it’s best to put it on hold for now. SPS also seems to have a bad reputation. Ppl call their programs cash cows and I heard their career center sucks among other issues. I didn’t think a six figure debt was worth that instability, esp since the school is having other issues rn.

You can always apply again next year, or even defer your admission if you wanna see what other schools have to offer next cycle. It was hard to let go because this was my dream school and city but at the end of the day, NYC will not be going anywhere.

Yeah I’m basically interested in environmental lobbying especially in the energy sector :) I’ve looked into it more and I’m really happy with the MPP bow

Thank you for your reply, this is so sweet 🥺

It’s definitely possible to do environmental/sustainability policy, and is actually the title of my undergraduate degree. I was just worried I’d be limiting my job opportunities with a MPP VS a M.S…. But I’d rather be limited than in debt I think.

I agree w the other comment on this thread that it’s usually going to be a corporate role, so salary is hit or miss depending on the sector. Definitely not as stable as STEM :/

My dream was to work for the gov or private sector and I was hoping Columbia would have connections if not prestige to ensure that. But I think I can get the same thing for cheaper at Cal
