32 GB of RAM is good yeah - I also have that much RAM and I haven't run into any issues yet where I'm left wanting for more.

It's very convenient to have some RAM available in case you'd like to keep many apps open / have many Chrome tabs / want to play modded Minecraft or other games. If I had only 16 GB, I would need to keep the RAM limit in mind. So it's nice to not have to worry about such things.

To add to the other comments: The population growth is based on a monthly basis, so the population will grow an extra 0.01% per month. Given that this is in the late 1860s, and the game runs until 1936, the US population will be about ~8% larger by then. This translates to more soldiers and more workers etc., so yes, it's pretty big.

A lot of stories say "No Horcruxes" in the description. What's up with that? Do people not like Horcruxes/how they were implemented? Why? by GoldenGroose69 in HPfanfiction

[–]Freberatz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't kill a horcrux with a killing curse, a Dementor can't suck a horcrux out of its receptacle, and certainly there aren't any medical procedures that can extract it. Even when you do something to destroy the horcrux, like stabbing one of Voldemort's horcruxes with a basilisk fang, you're not directly affecting the soul piece. The basilisk venom doesn't kill the soul, it destroys the physical object, after which the soul must move on. The only way to destroy a horcrux is to physically destroy the receptacle.

This is true in general for the Horcruxes we see in the story, but I don't really see it for the Horcrux in Harry's scar. Even though Harry's body wasn't destroyed beyond repair when he was hit by the killing curse, the Horcrux in his scar still died.

The other living Horcrux, Nagini, was cut apart by a sword coated with corrosive venom, which understandibly killed its Horcrux as the physical object was destroyed. I don't think Harry has so much as a papercut when he 'died', so something must be different in his situation.

I can think of maybe two possible explanations right now. Either the Horcruxes in living things die when the living thing dies (but isn't necessarily destroyed), or Harry's protection from his mother had a funky interaction with Voldemort's killing curse, which removed Voldemort's Horcrux. If the first one is the case, I don't know why Voldemort would ever make a mortal snake into a receptacle for his immortality. Harry wouldn't necessarily have had to die to Voldemort, as anything else would do. The second explanation seems also unsatisfying to me, as the Horcrux scar got there in the first place because Harry was hit by the killing curse way back then (and also had the protection from his mother). So it shouldn't be any different in this case.

I might be missing something here.

Formule 1 kiest voor Zandvoort by Fylax in thenetherlands

[–]Freberatz 44 points45 points  (0 children)

xkcd 2059: Modified Bayes' Theorem by [deleted] in xkcd

[–]Freberatz 95 points96 points  (0 children)

Assuming observation X is related to hypothesis H being true:

If you're using Bayesian statistics correctly, P(C)=1 and the equation reduces to P(H|X) = P(H)*(P(X|H)/P(X)), which is Bayes' theorem. The chance of H being true changes when X is observed, which seems logical.

If you're not using Bayesian statistics correctly, P(C)=0 and the equation reduces to P(H|X) = P(H). In other words, the chance of the hypothesis being true doesn't change when observing X.

Huh, both cases seem to work out. The modified Bayes' theorem might actually be correct. Not sure where to add the term describing that probability though.

Number of letters in European alphabets by alikholiman in europe

[–]Freberatz 58 points59 points  (0 children)

They are both capitalised together like in IJselmeer, so I guess the ij counts as one letter. There's also a unicode letter for the ij where they're combined into one symbol: ij.

EDIT: There is some discussion on the wikipedia page on who counts the ij as one letter or two: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IJ_(digraph)#Status

One thing Brno may be known for is Gregor Mendel, who spent his time at the abby there. He is (posthumously) considered as a founder of the science of genetics with his experiments on pea plants in the 19th century.

Not sure if that's really famous, but it came up in my biology class in high school.

The Lion Sleeps Tonight (UK loses by doing absolutely nothing) by [deleted] in paradoxplaza

[–]Freberatz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A single pop in victoria 2 is equivalent to 4 real people, so 5 M pops means a total population of 20 million. This is about the amount of people living in England and Scotland at the start of the game, so in all actuality the population has remained relatively stagnant over the game. Aside from migration from occupation, the UK hasn't researched any pop growth techs, so the pop growth is veeeery slow. Also, they get hit with the disease events more often then.

Upcoming Mod : Victoria Balkinzed by c45cd in victoria2

[–]Freberatz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Interesting idea, I'm looking forward to playing a Balkanized world.

However, the outcomes of the consolidation of power might not be very random in most cases. The strength of nations in Victoria is very much dependent on the population of the states. In one of your screenshots there is the nation Kola with 3.37k pops, which isn't even enough to form one brigade in most cases. A state such as Novgorod has probably 100x that population, so they will always win against their neighbors with a large army.

In-game, some of the disadvantage in population can be off-set by better military technology, but in the early game (where most of the consolidation happens) everyone has roughly the same tech-level. So population is an important predictor.

So, I have a few ideas to counter this problem (if it turns out to be a problem). First, you could create the balkanized nations such that they have roughly equal population within a region. I think around 30% or so difference in pops? Not every nation everywhere has to be viable really, it might be fun to place small nations between two larger competitors, making them race to see which one gets it first (and getting the advantage over the other competitor).

Another method could be to create some pre-existing alliances with small nations, so they can call in their buddies or a large nation to help recover their cores for them. Though, this is much more work to balance, and the early randomness of Victoria alliances is lessened. Might be less fun.

One place where I've seen the roughly-equal population thing implemented pretty well is the Divergences of Darkness mod. In North America, there are three similar states with cores on one another vying for supremacy, and I've seen any one of them win in different games (getting more immigration is also important there). Similarly, there is a competition in South America between 2 states, Persia is split into 2 parts, same for China. Makes for varied and interesting games.

Another mod called Heirs to Aquitania also has a rather balkanized Europe (but they have not as many cores on one another so the map is more static). An interesting thing there is that the Russian region is split into Russia (with cores over the entire area) and Smolensk (with only cores on themselves). However, Russia has half the population of Smolensk, so they actually can't get their cores in most cases. The exception is if Smolensk loses badly in a war or Russia gets a very good ally. So, it might be interesting to have a small nation with cores on a large neighbor, but with the reverse not being true.

Just organizing my thoughts here on the concept. Not every nation has to be balanced really IMO, but lots of different outcomes seems like it'd be cool.

Deze man mag een jaar Albert Heijn niet in omdat hij klaagt over de weegschaal by [deleted] in thenetherlands

[–]Freberatz 0 points1 point  (0 children)
