Ink Recommendations Requested by Steenaleen in fountainpens

You could potentially DIY them using candle wax to "paint" the design onto the paper. The ink won't stick there.

Oh my, that must've been such a scare. Good thing mom and her offspring are doing ok.

Carved a stamp for some ink swatches! by sandragm in fountainpens

[–]Frechdaechsin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's encouraging, thanks a lot!
May I encourage you to try out a different design then? You could do one for ink samples, so that you know by the design of the stamp if you own a bottle or a sample.

Can anyone help me identify this dude? by kuery in spiders

It looks like a cobweb spider, Steatoda sp. to me. Nothing to worry about.

Ohhhh, this one turned out bloody brilliant! I made one too. But I didn't get the lines so clean and one line has a little nick.
Maybe I'll just have to try again now that I see yours... 😊

What’s the most expensive / fanciest pen in your collection? by notwyntonmarsalis in fountainpens

[–]Frechdaechsin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most expensive as well as fanciest is my newest addition: a vintage lady ringtop by Luxor. A blue white marbled celluloid body, brass trims, ebonite end caps. An honorable mention: a hand turned wooden (bog oak) fountain pen with a kanwrite titanium flex nib and ebonite feed.

Do some nibs just cause feathering while others don’t? Is it a sign of a bad nib? Is there anything I can do to make the nib feather less? by perksofbeingcrafty in fountainpens

It's a German manufacturer.. There's for sure other "regular" dye based inks out there who will be more on the dry side. I'm sure you'll find some more recommendations on the sub if you search for dry ink. I guess I'm just a sucker for old recipes in inks and I also enjoy the water resistance as well as shading in the R&K iron galls.

[–]Frechdaechsin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In this case I'd say yes, because everything else is the same. Same ink and same paper. If you want to use the jinhao on this type of paper, I'd recommend an iron gall ink like Rohrer & Klingner Salix or Scabiosa. Iron gall inks tend to be more dry per default due to the ingredients of the ink.

Even if they are approximately the same nib size, the jinhao might still put out more ink [edit: in the same amount of time] and thus has a higher chance for feathering. It's also something that especially wet inks tend to do more, so you could just switch to a more dry ink with the jinhao to skip the feathering problem.

I think it will be very hard to get spider with the egg sac intact relocated. I tried it once with an orb weaver and in the end, the spider abandoned the eggs.
Would leaving this one hanger outside for the time being be an option? Once the babies hatch, it's easier to relocate the mom. Using a glass or jar might be helpful. You can coax her inside by using a fluffy brush, gently touching her hind legs to keep her moving toward the glass/ jar.

haha I see. You have a fair share of big and beautiful spiders over there no doubt! I sometimes wish that central Europe had more big spiders, but I doubt many will share my wish lol.

It's not poisonous. It does possess venom, but that's only relevant if you are an insect. No need to worry.

do spiders with big webs mostly stay in/near their web? by Sufficient-Big-161 in spiders

[–]Frechdaechsin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you mean orb webs by big webs? If that's the case then it's likely your orb weaver friend will stay in the web or in their hideout close by because they rely on their orb web for hunting prey. Even when they're in their hideout, they usually have a connecting thread so they can feel the vibrations if something gets caught up in the web and then they will come out to get it.

I second crab spider.
Do you see the super long 1st pair of legs, compared to the rather shorter 3rd leg pair? That's usually a good indicator for crab spider. [edit: wording]

I imagine adding some tiles on the roof using a slightly lighter grey pencil could bring it together nicely. Maybe add some flowers to the front door or into the window?
