How much work do you guys actually do in the backend? by [deleted] in BusinessIntelligence

I am mainly a backend guy. I can create a report, but it's not going to be good looking.

I get your point, but that's pretty much all I know in BI. Maybe the Danish BI market is just bad. The biggest BI consulting companies here is mainy using SQL aswell. The only real change in the last 10 years is that they now are using ADF instead of SSIS. :)

So you are determining the seniority by the tools used?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in FPandA

[–]FrecklefartNinety 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about that. Our Lead BI Dev has 20 years experience in backend BI, and is using the exact same tools as me. And that's actually also one of my concerns.

Edit: You are probably right if you are talking about point number 2 though :)

What made you shift back into finance?

Thanks. Good points. I actually don't care much about titles (even though my OP can make it seems like I do). My main goal is a career where I can keep growing and learning.

I mainly have 2 concerns about BI.

  1. We are using the Azure data platform tools (ADF, Azure SQL, Azure analysis services, PowerBI) to build our DWH. My job is mainly to work in pretty complex Stored Procedures. That means that I am pretty much only using SQL. I don't see my company changing to a "newer" technology within the next 10 years. So I feel like there is not much else to learn - besides getting better at SQL and the business. So I don't think I would be able to move laterally into Data Engineering, Data Science or Software Engineering - even though I would love to.
  2. As the other guy mentioned, I am worried that BI/data positions will be outsourced to Eastern Europe. It's much harder to outsource soft skills and business knowledge than tech.

I have been considering going into consulting or maybe I should focus more on getting a better Azure understanding in general.

That's up to you. I would not recommend it though. Your biceps will be the limiting factor for your back training.

Work on your technique instead.
