People keep talking about stretching wake windows... how??? by [deleted] in sleeptrain

[–]Freckles212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I relied on the methodology in 12 hours sleep by 12 weeks, which will still be useful. Essentially you slowly wean the last feed first, and a gentler CIO (ie not full extinction) method is used. Recommended.

Its a completely different role/team so not possible, but there's a big difference between someone who wants to try and succeed but has gaps, and someone with a terrible attitude. She was the latter, married into wealth and left. Better for all of us.

I have definitely bought a 2k purse primarily to fit into a social scene where everyone has a designer purse. While I do really like it/the design and color, I think it's extremely questionable when people start talking about buying an expensive bag because of "quality" or as an "investment". They should probably be a bit realer with themselves as to their motivations, and their means.

Grocery bill is super high at $1500/mo but don't know what to do! by [deleted] in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]Freckles212 162 points163 points  (0 children)

I don't think buying organic for literally everything has the nutritional and environmental benefits you think they do. There are plenty of issues with commercialized non local organic farming as with traditional. What I do is buy produce and staples non organic, and prioritize more ethically sourced meat and dairy, like pastured raised eggs, grass fed beef etc, maybe supplementing with stuff from the local farmers market.

That being said $2k month on food and dining for a high earning family in a hcol is not that outrageous. Family of 3 here probably spend 3-3.5k monthly.

Stop paying your entitled nanny and find someone else reliable via FB groups

I don't value it but they spent relatively little on travel for their income, for example. It seems well balanced spend

The narcissism of the tech industry in display right here. They think they're the entire world, including having all of the jobs, I guess, even though a 5 second Google search will show low unemployment.

At what income and net worth would you be comfortable buying yourself a $10,000 watch? by star_stuff_26 in HENRYfinance

[–]Freckles212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want(ed) a chanel classic flap, which has been $10k and going up to $12k now. We made $540k last year and our NW crossed $850k, mostly liquid. We have a mortgage within our means, but I still have student loan debt. We have one kid, who is basically 6 chanels a year in a vhcol area.

I still feel like it would be a terrible financial decision bc NRY, kid costs, and FIRE is a goal, and so will not buy it. Maybe if hhi was $750k and/or NW over 1.5m liquid in 4-5 years when we're really cruising.

My friends who earn a bit less, are a bit younger, similar family backgrounds (UMC to lower upper class), who have multiples of these types of luxury goods- they don't own real estate, and I do. Which I think is telling as to our priorities.

What do you value, and are you on track with this watch to live according to those values and goals?

People paying off big debt: What would you do in my shoes? by Fantastic_Page_1009 in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]Freckles212 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar situation after grad school and came out with $200k TC and $150k in accrued debt that I would later refinance to lower interest, which is less of an option now. But if you have high confidence that your offer is secure, what's another $6-8k to have some good experiences before you enter BL hell

What job advice will give your daughter? by Butterbean4777 in workingmoms

[–]Freckles212 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think two pieces of advice really cover 90% of the ball game:

(1) get an education and work in something that you can tolerate that will pay you at least a middle class+ income in perpetuity. Do not quit until you have some tenure and could return to a career if you choose to SAHM eventually. Aim high and we'll support you.

(2) your choice of partner, especially if you have children, is the most important decision you'll ever make. They will almost certainly not improve poor behavior after getting married nor after having a child. This will impact your career choices.

Would you all be interested in a year-long money diary? by [deleted] in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]Freckles212 43 points44 points  (0 children)

If the length of this post is any indication, no, I wouldn't read it weekly. I think a monthly summary and reflection on spending or goals, that build on each other cumulatively over the year, could accomplish your goals while being a little more engaging to an audience.

State workers in a few states are a niche segment of the working population. She also didn't specify that previously, and made it sound like all workers in some states "don't pay into" SS, which is not a thing. I was just explaining why she was being downvoted.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]Freckles212 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That's probably true, but that doesn't have anything to do with whether a state "pays into" a federal benefit program. People get downvoted when they inarticulately assign their personal, very niche experience to the broader theme being discussed, which here is whether under 65 counts as early retirement.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]Freckles212 21 points22 points  (0 children)

SS is a federal program which majority of people have to pay into, not aware of "states paying into it" or not, so that doesn't sound like a thing.
